Rorona+ is the most commonly suggested. The original Rorona was my first Atelier, but personally I found it and still find it a little boring. Thankfully I continued with Totori, because from then on this became one of my favorite series.

Start with Atelier Rorona+
It's part of the Arland trilogy along with Totori and Meruru. Rorona+ is the improved version of Rorona that is better in most every way, and has a bit of new endgame content that spoils a bit of Meruru, but you don't have to do it. Totori comes after Rorona, and Meruru after that. Totori is a worse game in every gameplay aspect compared to Rorona+, so it will feel odd going from Rorona+ to Totori, but Meruru is the best of the three.

I like VNs and like Arland Ateliers but the portraits make every scene feel cheap. The few times they try and act out a scene without those portraits made the scene so much better.
It was great in Ayesha with the different camera shots, angles, and panning, but less so in later games. They should get whoever directed Ayesha and make them in charge of all future Ateliers from now on.

personal ranking: totori (time limit is actually a challenge, only entry which i actually had issue minmaxing on time) > sophie (i liked the grid system a lot) = rorona+ (still playing in progress, 3rd assignment, time limit is a little on the generous side) = e&l > ayesha
oddly i still liked ayesha even though its at the bottom, partly because it was my first entry. might try meruru or firis/lydie on the vita next

I never said price was an issue, it was you or whoever the other user was who said that there's no point buying on day 1 because there's always a price drop. And I said that there hasn't really been a price drop for Firis since it's been out.
I haven't pirated games since I was like 13 because I'm an adult who has money. I want to support the developers if possible, don't want viruses on my computer, fiddle around half a day with cracks and cd keys and have support for the game.

I don't see anything in there suggesting you need them to see the true ending. In fact, the large chunk off them seem OK. Price should be halved for them, but it is what it is.

About 2-3 months from now Best Buy and Gamestop will clear out excess copies of the games (Amazon will of course match this price) at $20 PS4 and $30 Switch most likely. After that happens the game will sell out within a few hours and never be seen again at those two stores.
If you're buying digital, Firis hasn't dropped below $40 on any sales so the 20% off PSN code getting L&S down to $50 is going to be the best deal there.
