Kondo stopped writing heavy romance in Trails and unironically believes the romance aspect in TiTS was embarrassing and poorly written, which is a shame. Alisa and Rean were originally meant to be a canon couple within Cold Steel and actually have their romance play out throughout the story like Sky but it was canned for "pick a girl" because he thought it would be embarrassing to write.

Okay so maybe someone in this thread can help me. I've got Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2 for the Vita. Do I need to play them after playing Trails in the Sky? Or are the games standalone and I can play them in any order?

They are both standalone and not standalone. Cold Steel 1 and 2 tell a complete story (although it leaves many big questions unanswered), but that complete story is just one part of a larger story that spans the entire Trails series (including the sky games)
in other words, you can play and understand (mostly) Cold Steel 1 and 2 alone, but you won't get WHY any of it it happening or how it fits into the context of the events on the continent of zemuria over the past 5 or so in-game years

If you play both cold steel and sky eventually then it doesn't really matter. You can play Cold Steel without getting spoiled on Sky (with one notable exception, the identity of one of the major sky playable characters, who has a big role in the cold steel games). In fact, playing Sky after cold steel will probably answer many of the questions you're left with after cold steel 2, although you still won't know the exact nature of how Erebonia fits in until CS3 releases in english.
Basically, if you just want to play CS now but plan on playing sky after, then go for it as long as you don't mind being spoiled on a character's identity (late-game sky second chapter spoiler)
