From what little exposure I had to Xenosaga as a teen at the time, it really seemed like only the first game and bits of the third were good. The second and pretty much everything else involving saga kind of collapsed in on itself.

Same. Couldn't complete it back when the game first came out since my 2nd disc was scratched right after you get out of the 4th dimension, but this time I specifically looked up how to get Nel and Albel in your party instead of the stupid loli.

They were ambitious anime games that took themselves seriously without much irony, and Sup Forums equates that with fedora-wearing neckbeards welding cheap katanas now. Plus there were valid arguments that could be made against the games, such as inconsistent art styles (especially episode II) and the fact that they were more movie than game at times. And, though this is more of a criticism that would have been made back then, they were part of that trend towards removing world maps and making things more linear. Sup Forums might actually like that these days though, since a lot of people use "open world" as a criticism now.

The first one is the JRPG I've beaten the most times. XS3 is amazing, and if you get through the trilogy, and watch the ending, then it's truly heartbreaking that it didn't get the great big franchise it set out to have. The last 2 are utter trash in more ways that I have breath to spell out.

Negative. The third is by far the best in the trilogy, though you're right about 2 being the worst. The story goes to some really cool places, and despite the franchise being cut short, the plot is given a nice end point (with obvious lots of other adventures and events to unfold afterwards).
