Best GPU for ~$200: R9 380 vs GTX 960

Which is the better card for around $200, the R9 380 or the GTX 960? I frequently hear that the 380 is the better choice, but most benchmarks have both cards tied for all practical purposes (

You seem to be trying to convince yourself to not buy the 380, why is that OP? Are you just retarded?

youtube.com/watch?v=uAlIAfwyvo4

If the 380 is better than the 960 fps-wise, why the hell are you trying to convince yourself to buy the 960. Nvidia's cucked you really bad.

I have the 380. It's bretty good.

Pretty satisfied with my 380x, why would you get a gtx 960, it's horrible and it has issues that nvidia is ignoring. Every maxwell card suffers to horrible pcie power spikes when overclocked.

You'll find that AMD cards will refuse to pull over 50w from the pcie, so it's better for your mobo and for system stability.

Depends what CPU are you using, Modern Intel i5, then the 380, budget AMD CPU then the 960.

Not at all. If anything I'm leaning towards the 380/380x, simply because it's largley the same performace at a slightly cheaper price. I was just curious why people say the 380 actually performs better when most review site's benchmarks (such as Anandtech, pic related) indicate a almost perfect tie.

Thanks. I heard AMD's drivers had improved since launch, looks like that's true.

r9 290 is $200 right now. You missed the non-ref one.

>Refurbished

I'm interested to know why.

>buying budget cards in the first place.
It's not a fucking battery where it'll run out of juice. You have 3 months of warranty on it.

Nvidia can't deal with dx12 in that gen, the choice should be obvious

In short, AMD drivers use more CPU than Nvidia's.
Pairing the stronger 380 with a weak CPU could net you less performance than pairing the weaker 960 with the same CPU.

>amd
>improve

Gtx 960 2gb if only for the "features". For instance I use shadowplay quite a bit to show my friends certain parts of a game in playing or a program I'm using. Fraps, bandicam, and all other recording software don't even come close to being as good as shadowplay and have much higher performance drag.

>current 980ti owner
>prior xfire r9 390 owner.

Just to stave off anyone saying I'm shilling. AMD has that awesome xfire scaling for games that accept it. Nvidia for the ease of use, and seemingly more " polished" experience.

If you can wait just four more weeks you should be able to buy a Polaris card that will cost the same as an R9 380 and GTX 960 and wipe the floor with both.

R9 380X
/thread

This. Wait for a r9 480 or gtx 1060.

Also I have a gtx 960. It's decent, quiet, never over 70c, and I play witcher 3. Howwwwwever i only bought it because it was on sale for $185 4gb with backplate. If it wasn't cheaper I would have bought the 380.
But seriously polaris should be announced by June and on the streets by July (probably) .

Just wait 2 months for polaris, otherwise 4GB 380, the 960 doesn't support a-sync and doesn't perform as well overall

I had both.
go for 960. more stable, better drivers and services, game support.....

380

380. Overclock it for 380x performance.

But user, how will you use CUDA if you buy amd?

As much as I'd like to wait, my current GPU died, and consequently I'm reduced to using a GTX 285, circa 2009.

Amd cards age like wine, nvidia more like milk, or eggs.

This.

I'm in a similar boat, I got an old 6950 and I NEED to play the new Total War when it launches at the end of May.

What do I do? Suicide?

Lower the settings maybe?

You could get a 750 Ti while waiting for the Pascal/Polaris. They are dirt cheap nowadays.

What do you think I am, some sort of fag?

The GTX 960 is not worth it, 2GB or even the 4GB. Only thing it has going for it is the aesthetic design similar to the 970's Windforce 3 design. WHile both cards are neck in neck I chose the r9 380X for it's 256-bit cause I did not want another 128-bit card.

$200 is cheap enough for me to risk buying refurbished. I wouldn't bother with a 380 or 960.

970, 390, or even 980 are what I'd be looking at.

Refurb cards can come with warranties too, you know.

The 370 is like $120 on sales atm

If your buying this card now that means you will have it for the next 3 or 4 years. I would get the R9 380 because it's going to run DX12 better than the GTX960.

960 is shit. just find a 770 on the cheap

AMD has a a similar thing to Shadowplay tho

Fuck off senpai, I'm stuck on an HD4870

Those competed against the GTX 260

Sticking with my 4gb R9 290 for now
till whatever comes my way with a nice price

How many weeks tho. I got a really good deal on a 380 and I'm not sure of I should wait till polaris gets here.

using an gtx 275 to play mostly private wow servers and it does the job more than well enough.

Source on this?

If I manage to find a GTX 980 for $260 is it worth it to go from an R9 290 to that to hold over till a 1080 Ti OC card comes out in a year or two? Or should I just hold off and get a 1080 Ti next year when they're available?

You should be able to get a 970 pretty soon in the $200 range.

Check microcenter I was there today in Columbus and they've got the EVGA 970 SC and SSC and MSI 970 Gaming 4G for under $250 each with mail in rebate that bring all of them into the 220-230 range

This is about a local used gigabyte 980 btw

I have the following config :
I5 4670k
16 go ram
250 go Samsung SSD
Gtx 660 ti 4 go
Gigabyte Z87P D3 that support crossfire but no SLi

Will it play starwars battlefront and totalwar warhammer fine ? 1080p 60 fps

If not , what graphic card / setup i may get ?

AMD is cancer

5 rupees have been deposited on your NVidia GeForce account.

Buy the 380. Can directx 12 and AMD won't gimp its performance.

AMD if you have strong CPU, Nvidia if you don't.

i'd say stick with r9 290, I know that my 290x has only been getting better with drivings and its about even with a 980 ( gigabyte windforce edition) even though when I got it is was 15% slower then the 780 ti.

LITERALLY just wait for pascal to come out and then get a 970 when the price has dropped. It may or may not be as cheap as the 960 RRP but it sure as hell will be way more perf for the money.

Or just fucking get the 970 now. You can get em for £200 from some Ebay sellers (I'm talking new, mass-sellers. Not used shit)

suggesting a card that only has 75% memory.

Come on kid, if you wanna be a gaymer at least do your own research and don't relly on opinions coming from neckbeard fanboys.

if you want an oven get the AMD card
