OS X package manager

What's better, Macports or Homebrew?

Fuck off.

Asking which package manager is better isn't tech support. You're very smart dude.

PS: I prefer Homebrew.

Macports

Macports has more packages and a more secure, more portable, and less system-breaking way of installing them (fun fact: macports used to use /usr/local too! macports stopped because having anything in /usr/local is a recipe for disaster. homebrew went with the caskroom clusterfuck instead.)

Homebrew is hipster shit that steals all its packages and major patches from homebrew and still can't make fucking fontforge with a GUI work right

>i want to install third party software and keep it up to date
macports
>i just want to install a newer version of vim
homebrew
But a problem arises there because you end up putting a bin directory that homebrew made user-writable at the front of your path on the least secure UNIX known to man... enjoy your fake sudo.

It literally is though.

Homebrew. It's obvious.

It can you faggot. In finder, alt + edit will show you the "move here" aka cut.

For real though OS X is a fucking meme. I should know, I used to have a macbook before I got a windows laptop.

Haha. So you admit you run a SysV clone as your desktop? I mean SysV died. I guess ricing desktops is considered productive to 20-something NEETs. Meanwhile I'll be gainfully employed with the best BSD based Unix produced since NeXT.

for real, pkgsrc though

restarted faggot

Homebrew, despite having less packages than MacPorts, is kept up to date more often than MacPorts (see openssh, for example).

It also has the very convenient cask tool, to install binaries (It's a bit buggy tho)

The only downside is that it's single user.

Still, I'd rather have a Linux machine. Why hasn't Apple developed a native package manager yet? We have a mouse pointer that gets bigger when you shake it but no package manager?

pacman.

Homebrew, as the others have said. Macports is decent, but homebrew has a crap ton more software as well as not requiring sudo for everything.

Homebrew is better, but sadly it's far and away not a good package manager.

kek

I used MacPorts years ago but picked up Homebrew when I first heard of it and haven't looked back. I don't know how it is these days, but a few years ago it was slower than Atom running on a 386 (most things took 2-4x longer to install in MacPorts than they did in Homebrew) and when issues arose with ports, half the time maintainers couldn't be arsed to fix them so a good chunk of ports were just broken.

Homebrew isn't perfect either but it's about as fast as most Linux package managers and if something breaks, it's either fixed or removed from the main repo until someone fixes it.

No that's just it, it's funny how you have to do it the way how he explained it to him.
