I really need (well, more like want, but I miss some useful programs) OS X on my PC, but seeing how much shit I have to do in order for it to work on a PC makes me not want to even try it.
I want El Capitan on a Skylake build: i5 6500, Asrock B150M and GTX 960.
OP here, please don't post unless you are gay like me.

Skylake PC's work fine as long as you have a GPU which you do. Use Unibeast to make a UEFI bootable usb and it's all trial and error from their. But remember that UEFI booting for newer hardware is a must have and use nv_disable=1 for one of the boot flags after installation because nvidia isn't natively supported on 10.11 until you install the drivers.
Lincoln Stewart
I guess I'll try. The thing that is bothers me a little is that I would have to install it on my slow ass wd green 5400rpm with 500gigs of space. I don't want it to run like shit.
Also, no, I have it on a VM and it runs like shit for some reason and I tried every fix. Windows dragging lags, opening stuff is slow and mouse scroll scrolls by pixel so I have to scroll like a maniac to move the page just a little bit down.
So I would like to make myself a second boot with el capitan. Being able to develop in rails without cloud platforms, try final cut and logic and some other programs and hopefully be more productive are some of the reasons I want it. And I'm too poor to buy a decent MacBook because I would have to give, like, at least 4 monthly salaries for one of those.

>Trying to dual boot El Craptan and Windows 10 on the same SSD >Install OSX on one side of the partition >Try to install Windows on the other >Windows can't install here sweetie! :) >Google this >"The EFI partition has to be 400MB uwu!!!" >Resize the partition to 400MB >Try again >Windows installs fine >Clover is dead though, boot into OSX using USB >Try to reinstall Clover >Doesn't work >Try every version of Clover >Just doesn't work >Get one to work >Windows Partition doesn't show up all of a sudden even with NTFS.efi and whatever >Give up and just install Windows 10 on the whole disk I wish I could do it again but Clover is such a pain in the ass. Does Chameleon work on Craptan?
Noah Brooks
OS X runs like shit in VMs because VMs provide no compatible graphics acceleration, and OS X has had a graphically-accelerated UI since at least 2003. Macs incapable of acceleration haven't been manufactured in nearly 15 years, so the fallback software rasterizer runs like dog shit.
Interestingly though graphics acceleration works fine if you set up OS X under a hypervisor like Xen and enable graphics passthrough with a supported card. It's only more standard VM software like VMWare, Virtualbox, etc that doesn't play nice.
Christopher White
use separate drives you insane nutnigger

Even getting Windows and Linux dual-booting properly on the same disk can be a pain if you don't do things in the right order.
Really with as cheap as drives are now there's no reason to not keep different OSes on different disks.

Windows actually uses a much smaller EFI partition. You actually have problems if you try to install Windows and then OSX because the EFI partition will be too small. That wasn't the problem.
The problem with Clover is that there are a hundred small things that you can fuck up that just screw the entire process.
My guess is that you didn't erase the disk in Disk Utility, allowing OSX to write the GPT partition scheme to it, and ended up with a hybrid MBR/GPT scheme.
My order for my current triboot was OSX -> Windows -> Debian, with everything booting from my SSD.

I've been entertaining thoughts of building a hackintosh workstation using cheap E5-2670 v1s (undecided if single or dual). How's the power consumption on that thing? Xeons don't have native power management, right?
Build a PC from parts that weren't manufactured during the stone age. PCs have been 64-bit since the Core 2 Duo came out...

InsanelyMac is an excellent place to start. Read a little about how to assemble a hackintosh, for you have no idea what to do.
>E5-2670 v1
Is sandybridge, allright? You need search on foruns about the E5 xeons on OS X. I do not know how is the power management of E5 Xeons on OS X.
Insanelymac, Tonymac, Rampagedev is great foruns.

This is hackintosh, not a real mac.
EFI is for Macs. UEFI and BIOS is for PCs. You can install on UEFI or BIOS.
Hunter Morris
why can't we discuss tonymac tools on insanelymac, do they hate each other?
Why the fuck do I need to register to download, do they want me to shitpost it?

Intel OS X has *always* required EFI because there has never been a BIOS-based Intel Mac (save for the Intel dev kit handed out to a few developers). Chameleon emulates Mac EFI on BIOS PCs.
64-bit support is your issue. The last OS X release to support 32-bit machines was 10.7 Lion. The current version is 10.11 and 10.12 is right around the corner, so it's pretty horridly outdated at this point. Many third-party Mac devs only support 10.9 and up.
Disk Utility automatically puts GPT on all disks it formats as a new drive in EC.

Tonymac is a bit of a shitter when to the rest of the hackintosh community. He takes the tools developed by others and packages them into installers with obfuscated install scripts and uses those to attract visitors for ad revenue and donations.
His site is helpful but his ethics are questionable.
Liam Martinez
Can I install OS X on a T420? What complications will I run into?
If it has a Intel wireless card you can kiss your wireless networking goodbye unless you change it (which is pretty easy, but might require a modified BIOS for whitelisting on some Lenovos).
Other than that, it seems like the trackpoint might in few cases need a sleep cycle to work after cold boot and that you might need to replug the headphone jack two times in order to get it to recognize it. Other than that, it seems to work well. Check out the insanelymac post about it: insanelymac.com/forum/topic/285678-lenovo-thinkpad-t420-with-uefi-only/

There's a reason why you get warned the moment you mention his tools on InsanelyMac or other hackintosh places.
It's less taboo than those shitty babby's-first-hackintosh OS X distros like Niresh since they're a mess, but TonyMac's tools are really dodgy. So if you ask for help at InsanelyMac for example, never mention TonyMac or his tools.

Once you install multiple partitions onto a HFS+ drive it'll be a GPT/MBR hybrid drive. There's a tool to fix this called gdisk. Try googling around for GPT/MBR gdisk fix and you'll find step by step guides how to fix the hybrid problem.
