Is MPC / MPV really that much better than VLC?

Is MPC / MPV really that much better than VLC?

Review sites generally say there's not a massive difference between the two, however anonymous posters have called me a newfag for using VLC.

What am I really missing out on?

just do you brudda

enjoy your laggy playback with libass subtitles

MPV and MPC-HC provide much more customizability than VLC, which lets you control and fine tune the quality/performance ratio, however this is mostly useful if you're using a high-end PC. If your computer is shit then there's pretty much no difference between MPV, MPC and VLC.

>What am I really missing out on?

a good amount of placebo, dank vlc memes and autism in general. if you think it's worth it though, you should really try and see for yourself.

If you care about image quality then yes. VLC is best for common use on shit that doesn't really matter and porn for ease of use.

DELETE THIS

mfw comparing 2 different frames

Clearly reviewers don't care about video quality or resource usage.
MPC uses HW acceleration for decoding, postprocessing and presentation when possible because it's more efficient than doing that on CPU. Also, VLC deinterlacing is pure shit when compared to GPU methods(which are motion compensated with cadence detection). If you use NVIDIA, VLC converts YUV->RGB incorrectly causing washed-out blacks.
MPC allows rendering subtitles at Desktop's resolution, while VLC renders them at the same resolution of the video(making subtitles blurry if the content is not HD).

i am still waiting for the "bloatgirls" derailment of the thread

MPC-HC + madVR
is there anything better?

Not for Windows at least.

VLC is too popular with normies, so the people who rely on feeling like they know something others don't rushed to find a similar, but (and did this the important part) more obscure player.

command line cucks like to exaggerate geek stuff. vlc does the job without using a keyboard.

libass performs better than xyvs now, and has for the last few years.

mplayer was better than vlc.

I use it cause MPV boots way faster.
I have this shit old laptop, and vlc takes a while to start. MPV is ready to go in mere second.

You can use a frontend.

>Coalgirls 1080
>VLC
This is specially crafted bait for Sup Forums right?

I keep VLC around for ISO playback.

what device is that?

>Next gen
>Slanted
>Fan output everywhere
>Gaming
Take a guess.

A ps4?

Oh i don't use a console so it just caught me off guard. Last console I had was a ps1

Not difficult to know which of the two next gen gaming devices it would be though.

somehow the mirror finish makes it impossible for me to recognize anything in that image

>he's not intelligent enough to use the cli

what about MPDN?

>not using smplayer with mpv chosen as the backend

It's the best of both worlds, you have all the gui bells and whistles of vlc with the superior playback of mpv plus it has youtube-dl built right in.

I use Baka mplayer.
Tbh streaming was fine, but Sup Forums and Sup Forums said I need to download anime. So I used vlc, then I tried mpv but it is the basic of basic players. I used potplayer for a bit and liked that, then someone said I need to use mpc, I didn't like that. Fucking ugly interface, and the fact that I need to install several 3rd party programs so it's "perfect".

Finally and user told me to use baka mplayer. I like it, although I get some screen tearing, and wonky stuff when switching to/from full screen mode, and no "recently played" so I can easily navigate to last watched anime episode (there's a tab, but nothing shows). Plus the black ui works well at night.

If only there was an actual answer, instead of shit flinging. I thank the user that told me about baka player.

>I tried mpv but it is the basic of basic players
What's basic about it?

he prolly never got into that config stuff.

A video player in 2016, the whole manual consist of command line arguments...
Menu doesn't even cover basic settings, you'll have to edit a config file manually.

>the whole manual consist of command line arguments...
That's just wrong.

>Menu doesn't even cover basic settings, you'll have to edit a config file manually.
Basic settings are pretty good anyway. But I can see your point in that being "basic" in your opinion.

baka player looks nice but the lack of gui options AND no use of a config file kills it for me.

either use mpv or smplayer with mpv as the backend.

smplayer is my choice

Try MPC-BE. It's like MPC-HC but with a more modern UI and seek previews.

>That's just wrong.
That's just wrong: mpv.io/manual/master/

That also explains config settings among other things.

While the majority is either commandline arguments or config settings for manually editing config file. Know what I am saying?

I am happy that the manual is so detailed but it's definitely not userfriendly.

>Know what I am saying?
I know you're saying something else than what I said was wrong, yes.

>fucking ugly interface

Who the fuck cares about the interface of your video player? You shouldn't see it for more than a few seconds while setting up the video.

Even if you play the video windowed you can make it borderless by pressing 3 in MPC-HC.

Why it build font caches every startup?

>skip playback
>green corrupted video
>EVERYTIME

VLC never more.

You fix the nvidia problem setting a option on the Geforce panel or whatever it is called tho

>he doesn't watch his mongolian motion pictures in 60 fps

PotPlayer

youtube.com/watch?v=eDlf36jjfhI

Whats the best way to interpolate to 60fps? I've heard that SmoothVideo Project 4 is working great now.

just install KCP

>inb4 muh 24 stutters per second superior

I don't even know what that is

Better than trying to improve the video by making up your own frames.

you should hire chinks do draw your inbetween frames for some breadcrumbs

I guess he is referring to Media Player .NET, which is somehow never discussed here.
zachsaw.com/mpdn/

I've seen smooth ass interpolations with so little artefacts that you won't even notice them except if you actively look for them like the autist you are.

i use mpc-hc and used to use the haruhi codecs. now i just use vanilla and dont see a need for anything else

bluesky the maker is my nigga from nippon

how?

I enjoyed watching this funky animu video nonetheless.

does mpv for mac properly support retina displays?

It's a fucking media player, how would it not support display scaling?

nice ps quadruple nigga

some players can fuck it up, i know plex did at one point. just looking for verification from someone who actually owns one

>Is MPC / MPV really that much better than VLC?
only if you hate GUIs

rtorrent user -> mpc
qbit/transmission user -> vlc

sane people -> mplayer
