I'd probably suggest against the 1070 then. Its probably going to be a ripper of a card, but if you're not playing AAA's, then some budget/mainstream card will probably do you better.
Maybe wait and see what AMD offers for their cards. Polaris will allegedly be under $299 and perform as well as a 390 with less than half the power consumption.
To each their own though. I'll wait for Vega before I make my choice.

I shouldn't say AAA is out of the question. I'd like to try a few out on the horizon, but they just aren't my bread and butter. I most enjoy wargames and the occasional Company of Heroes / Men at War / Squad / ARMA so there is a need for a GPU, and I'm making a new tower from scratch, so I wanted everything to be as "future proof" as possible for the next say 4-5 years. It seems that in any case the 1080 is indeed beyond my scope.

Lel. Seeing what a big disappointment the 1080 turned out to be, the new Polaris cards might actually manage to match the 1070 in performance as long as AMD really did improve their architecture as much as they've been bosting, even if the Polaris chip is smaller.
