Old video cards

I have a question that I can't seem to find a sure answer for and that is would a nvidia GT 630 2GB ddr3 (kepler) outperform an old Sapphire Ati Radeon HD 3850 1GB GDDR3 ? if so by how much ?

I only want to know because the GT 630 has HDMI and I can get it dirt cheap

the gt630 is rubbish, get at least a 750ti or nothing

From what I can tell the cards would have their strengths and weaknesses, but would more or less come out the same.

IMO i'd get the 630, as the 3850 is a really old card, and the 630 uses much less power. And for the love of god make sure you are actually getting the Kepler GT 630, as the other 2 versions are rebranded GT 430/440 dies.

Don't settle for these very low end cards, they aren't worth the price.
Get a GTX 950, they have a version that does not need a power pin, pulls power from pcie slot.

If you must get something shitty get a HD 5850 or something like that.

Old high end cards usually always beat newer low end cards that are theoretically the same on paper.

I still have my XFX Radeon 5770 1GB GDDR5. Has done me pretty well, I personally think source games particularly looked better on my old nVidia 9800 GT; but the fan was super loud and had a harder time maintaining good temps.

I know it a kepler card I've held it in my hands and googled the exact model, I'd only be paying $30 for it less power is a plus as well hopefully less heat too the 3850 idles at 56c, Thanks for the straight answer.
My main gaming rig has a GTX 980 the, PC this is going in just a backup machine used for basic stuff and for IT work

Oh good, $30 for it is a pretty ok deal, and the 630 Kepler should only use about 30W at the most, and is passive to boot.

This one has a dual slot 92mm fan also I'm in canada too so $30 is like nothing for it.

I would have used my old BFG Tech 8800 Ultra OC if it didn't just die on me I payed $749 for it back in 2007

They are similar in performance, but I recommend the Kepler.

I have the GT 530 myself, a decent chip for lowend gaming. It could max Cod4 and Me3 on my old 1280x800 rig. It currently powers my main rig with Borderlands 2 PhysX coprocessing.
This. If you can afford even more look out for 7970, 7950 or 7870 Tahiti-LE, its called Myst Edition or something. Its basically a 7950 disguised as a 7870.

This is its guts currently, I have another stick of the same ram on the way, and maybe I'll get an ssd for it next month is use it on a 1080p monitor, I run Doom bfg edition roller coaster tycoon and some other old stuff on it.

How old is this shit, and how are the specs?

This already looks like a Phenom II DDR3 build. Mine is Phenom II 940 / 4GB DDR2-800. The SSD gets bottlenecked through the slow PCI adapter (PCI gen 1.0), but its still faster. Look out for a small Samsung Pro. I could get a cheap gayming card but the PSU wouldn't handle it, it is mostly a backup desktop machine.

It's a AMD FX-4100@4ghz with 4gb DDR3 1600
PCIe 2.0 Ati radeon hd 3850 1gb with a WD 320gb 7,200rpm sata II hdd - with a Gigabyte 78LMT-S2P AM3+ mobo in a Corsair 400R case and a Thermaltake 450w 80+ psu

This is the correct answer.

hwcompare doesn't have a 630, but they do have a 640, and that's better than a 3850:

> uses much less power
There's 10W difference between them. Look up facts before you say them.

And yeah OP these are shit cards. Unless you're bound to AGP, get pretty much any newer card.

Get a 6870, 7870, or 7970.
Use the PSU calculator to see what you need: outervision.com/power-supply-calculator
If this build is 4+ years old then it's probably time you replaced the PSU anyway.

the 3850 1GB I have is a PCIe card I was just asking if the GT 630 would be worth the $30 to get newer i/o and maybe a bit more gpu power
>My main htpc/gaming PC has a GTX 980

>AMD FX-4100
Sounds shitty, it should be similar in performance to my 940. Did you buy the 630 yet? If not, don't do it, except you pay 10 €/$. I got my 530 for 20 € in 2012.

A friend of mine got a 5850 for 30 last year, but I would spend around 60-80 to get something future proof. Look out for the 7870 Myst LE edition.
Game-Debate is best, they are legit. They also have all versions of a card, ie GT 630 Kepler/Fermi.
His PSU is 80+ certified, it will handle a 7970 without problems. If hes lucky he can get one cheap soon when they release Polaris.
>30 $
No way. I would pay 5 € max. You can get much better cards for that money. I saw 650Ti Boost for 25 € already on Ebay. But AMD has better value. The normal 7870 has only 2 GB, the Myst ist 384 bit 3 GB, 1280 shaders.

The psu is brand new this year along with the case, The cpu+mobo are 3 years old the ram is new this year, the 3850 video card is from 2008, the hdd is old and will be changed soon to a ssd

I'm in canada and AMD 7970's are $200 - $300+
and 5850's are going for $175
>Mind you this $30 GT 630 I have no shipping or taxes to pay
Used market for gpu's in canada is brutal, also I live in a town of like 4,000 people and the nearest city is a 1 hour drive away

> if the GT 630 would be worth the $30
For 30 bucks you may as well give it a go

You shouldn't expect much, it is not faster. Newer games will not work even on low.

Nonsense! There is always a way to lower them even more and make it work. Just be a hipster and pretend this is modern art

Just fyi this isn't a gaming PC
>I have a main rig with a Gigabyte G1 gaming GTX 980 in it . . .

go on passmark.

compare scores of cards.

Pic related I play my newer games on that instead

>Skyrim
>Modern

Wtf, over 200? Even a 7990 people sell for like 120€ here.
