>Tech Giants Vow to Tackle Online Hate Speech Within 24 Hours archive.is/ssu7B
>EU links up with Twitter, tech firms to combat hate speech archive.is/8UTvG
>Highlights Beyond national laws that criminalize hate speech, there is a need to ensure such activity by Internet users is “expeditiously reviewed by online intermediaries and social media platforms, upon receipt of a valid notification, in an appropriate time-frame,” the companies... said....
“We remain committed to letting the Tweets flow,” said Twitter’s head of public policy for Europe, Karen White, in the statement.
“However, there is a clear distinction between freedom of expression and conduct that incites violence and hate.”
“With a global community of 1.6 billion people we work hard to balance giving people the power to express themselves whilst ensuring we provide a respectful environment,” said Monika Bickert, head of global policy management at Facebook, in the statement.
Under the terms of a code of conduct, the firms, which also include YouTube and Microsoft, have committed to "quickly and efficiently" tackle illegal hate speech directed against anyone over issues of >race, >color, >religion, >descent or >national or ethnic origin.
Among the measures agreed with the EU's executive arm, the firms have said they will establish internal procedures and staff training to guarantee that a majority of illegal content is assessed and, where necessary, removed within 24 hours.
They have also agreed to strengthen their partnerships with civil society organizations who often flag content that promotes incitement to violence and hateful conduct.
The European Commission and the firms have also agreed to support civil society organizations to deliver "anti-hate campaigns."

>facebook >twitter >microsoft >banning hate speech So literally nothing changes?
Andrew Green
Fuck off, EU. We neither want nor need your nanny-state shenanigans.
>Want to ban cash money >Want to ban freedom of expression
I'm going to have to buy a tank and an arsenal of weapons if this keeps going.

wft I hate EUROPEAN UNION, TECH COMPANIES now
Henry Morgan
This. The mentioned companies aren't exactly known for free speech. It won't affect Sup Forums so I don't really care.
>hitler did nothing wrong >kill all niggers >gas the jews >race war now >:^)

this. Not really a tech discussion. This just promotes low tier shit posting like this one
Nicholas Wright
No, because there are many people on Sup Forums that think that hate speech should be banned. Sup Forums needs the red pill on free speech.
Open source is the blue pill. Free Software is the red pill. RMS is with everything right except voting for Sanders.

There are no containment boards on Sup Forums.

In Canada and Australia factual statements such as the sexual orientation of a certain prophet or acknowledging the views of a certain trio of religions on homosexuality can be hate speech.

European Union will fall apart soon enough anyways.
Germans will make it happen, but rather unintended.
Lincoln Diaz
>rather unintended They do everything to gain the maximum out of the EU. Their will to gain is greater than the will to keep the EU alive.

Basically, the powers that be draw the line for their own purposes, which generally mean keeping themselves in power. A sensible appoach would be to charge people with inciting violence if violence occurs and there's a link from it to something someone said, but even that requires a great deal of descretion not to be abused, because connections like that can be made up at the convenience of any prosecutor.
Naturally, these laws would never make an exception for facts.
The only real solution is for people to learn not to react strongly to things unimportant people say on the Internet.

Hate speech is a interesting concept, what is hate speech to you to Sup Forums is a joke. And just like jokes, you can make fun of everything and everyone until it is about something you don't want to be joked about.
Everyone has their little walled garden of what they consider sacred, untouchable and your walled garden doesn't have the same in it as my walled garden.
I believe in absolute free speech, none of this bs about not being able to cry fire in a crowded theater or not being able to use speech to incite to violence or hate, it should be absolute. Anything else, is called censorship.

The problem is what is defined as hate speech. You can have a person come with a group of people to your own home (no, not internet) and throw stones while calling you a whore and telling you to kill yourself. It is still a suggestion but after a point I would imagine it gets tiring enough. These people should just be put away somewhere else and that's about it. Just have them fuck off a bit maybe.
I mean as an example you have BLM which will try to silence everything around them. They are best put away from the rest of the civilization. I don't agree with harm, but they are a bunch of crying babies and nobody has to be forced to get headaches.
And then there's other people who comment and critique. People who debate, people who ask questions and maybe crack a joke or two, people who just disagree and people who have different opinions.
And somehow, all of them can be put under this hate speech tag. All of them. This will eventually take away the ability to discuss anything. There will only be complacent people, except for the "protected" classes which will take advantage of this.
Easton Morgan
I tell you a perfect example of this sort of problems. And I'm not discussing the politics of the subject involved. Donald Trump, he used the "hate speech" effect in order to get the media and the spotlight on him and used it to get on the national political stage. Then when it quit being a joke and became a serious prospect that he was going to be the nominee you had a deal between Cruz and Kasich to join forces and somehow avoid Trump.
So in effect Cruz and Kasich were trying to "censor" Trump a position which was actually a majority at the time, and if you look at the polls they switched right at that moment, people don't like when you try to censor others just because you don't agree with the content of their speech. People will eventually turn against these companies for trying to control their speech.
At the same time, I agree that these companies have every damn right to do so because their platform is a private one and not a state owned one. They can do what they please. We don't have to use them.

oh boy. mentally ill progressives get even more power to attack anyone who disagrees with them. what could go wrong.
