DAC's are useful in some scenarios, but not nearly as often as they're used. Usually (read, on every laptop I have ever owned) the 3.5mm jack carries interference from other things on your system. Current laptop buzzes whenever I move a USB mouse. Using a DAC isolates your audio output from that interference with a clean digital signal removing buzzing. With all that said, if you're spending $300 on a DAC just because you bought into the snakeoil you should kill yourself.
How much should a good DAC cost?
I just use the one that's build into my screen.
There is some interference, but not nearly as much as plugging straight into the PC.
>LOL """audiophiles""" are so fucking retarded
In other news water is wet
holy shit that picture
>the mac
>the senn 800's
>the dedicated power supply
>those thick ass cables
top fucking kek I'm surprised he doesn't have cable lifts
>cable lifts
You mean cable elevators??
How Do Cable Elevators Work?
>Regardless of make or model, all cables create some form of electrical field around them. In free air, the field is a roughly cylindrical shape around the girth of the cable. However, when cables are placed on a boundary, such as a floor, the field becomes compressed, distorting the signal. Cable Elevators restore this field by raising the cable up, allowing the cable to deliver an undistorted signal. Cable Elevators are electrically inert, so they won't cause phase issues and because of their physical mass, Cable Elevators are able to provide a small measure of resonance damping on longer runs
Not even joking, that DAC is legit fucking amazing. You can hear detail that is unhearable on cheaper DACS.
Like, you can literally hear a truck outside the studio start and drive away faintly (and directionally) and you can't on others.
This particulate one should be the favorite of you audiophile haters. It's only 21 bit, not the '24 bit' that others have. They actually state that 24 bit is impossible physically with current IC packages.
It's all in the filter they use, and will publicly argue with you about on headfi. Grow some balls and go argue with them directly.
5$ top
>Realtek ALC892
>Support for 16/20/24-bit SPDIF input and output with up to 192kHz sample
>3$
Audiopoo literally retarded uneducated fools. It is sect of 21 century, that milk their retards
I expected that much.
A DAC is essentially a very simple device, right? - couple of transistors, what could possibly go wrong?
Are DACs useful if you're a musician?
That is a single chip
This DAC has 2 per channel, and is not delta-sigma.
Also, ALL audio DACs (inc. your laptop) have other components called filters.
Yes, and also ADC to go the opposite direction (instrument to computer)
No.
I have an ALC892 in my motherboard, the audio signal gets raped by noise from the other stuff on the motherboard. I can hear static-like noise when I scroll a webpage or watch a silent video.
holy fuck you're autistic.
Okay genius, make a good quality DAC just using DAC integrated circuits. All the hard work is done, right? Just buy one from Texas Instruments and wire the outputs to RCA out to hook into an amp.
Oh wait. That's right. That's not how it works. You're a spastic posting on Sup Forums who decided that he knows more than the electrical engineers who do this shit for a living.
>People spend tons of their own disposable income on things they actually like
I'd hate to be them.
it's all a meme, your life is a meme. audiophiles are laughed upon here, you're just making a fool of yourself
>oh damn I can't respond to this
>better just call hime a meme
Good DAC (or a least, external soundcards) should have a ADC, which is a bitmore expensive (preamp and all). I'd say between 50 and 200€ is good.
I got a Modi and Asgard 2
They look pretty
...
That's because you have shitty MB. I have no problem to drive my HD800 to 120db. No static without sound on max volume.
...
there's probably a problem with your ground. try a different power cord in a different outlet and see if the same thing happens. if that doesn't fix it, it's probably your PSU itself.
Nah, the ground is fine, the house has a brand new electrical set up. I bought already bought a USB DAC and now my speakers don't have any static.
great argument
>hurr this ferrari is expensive why are people so fucking retarded
If music is someone's passion in life what's the harm in spending money? Plenty of my friends have 6k ATVs and 20k bass boats. Stop being poor.
A good DAC should cost $100 at the absolute most. These guys putting out $2000+ DACs are swindling the retards.
Considering the picture seems to have brochures and information stickers its probably a setup at a trade show or something. Plus the decor is very "hotel"
Not that some audiophiles don't have ridiculous setups like that.
Don't bully Scruffy
Yggdrasil performs incredibly well as shown in measurements but what you are suggesting about "hearing more" is complete nonsense and unrelated to the the performance of any decent DAC, including what you find mounted on modern motherboards.
Isn't that bad
Just buy ODAC+O2 and call it a day. If you want other sound - use equalizer. That's what other 2k$ DAC/amps do, but on hardware level.
>That dust
kek
This isn't a gaming PC it just plays sound and werks
>Good DAC (or a least, external soundcards) should have a ADC
That statement made me dizzy.
Of course a good ADC will be more expensive.
But when you have zero interest in making recordings, just want to listen to some music, there is no reason to buy an expensive ADC just for the bundled DAC.
It's their filter, which they call the ‘mega-combo-burrito’ filter. It's beyond the DAC components themselves, it how it treats the signal before being amplified.
cont: I've compared the output of the Yggy to the output of a Naim (a fucking expensive as fuck) CD player DAC. I used the digital out of the Naim, so there are no confounding factors. There is a marked difference. It didn't sound too much better, but you can certainly hear more detail, if that's what you pursue.
>CD player
Kek. Good story grandpa
