The joys of KDE

Why is it so bad Sup Forums?

>millions in government subsidies
>some of the brightest minds in the industry working on it
>it just doesn't work

Because it's free software

Opening dolphin with sudo makes dolphin shit the bed.

Thunar has no problems with this.

All desktop environments on linux come with their own bells and whistles and weird oddities.

Why the hell are you opening a file browser as root?

Because you haven't riced it and customized it enough to your liking. That's literally what KDE is for.

How do you rice KDE ? With what ?

I've tried using KDE on opensuse leap, but just went back to GNOME

Somehow the gnome seems nice, out of the box, it has a design, consistent one mostly.

for KDE I can't say the same, it's just...not.
Any advice to how pretty it up ? Any shots ?

Because it doesn't open the damm start menu when you press the superkey by it's own.

I preferred KDE4. They really are morons, come on; they start working on Plasma 5 before 4 is in a fully working state.

This. Eventually I just settled on Super + space

>it doesn't open the damm start menu when you press the superkey by it's own

clicks on file icon, little plus symbol turns to little minus symbol. not still no idea wtf that does

>Government subsidies
Theres the problem

Ricing doesnt make fix the fact that it is an unstable pile of shit

i had 4.x for a few weeks last year
shit was cash

Right? Then everybody decided to adopt Plasma and then I cried myself to sleep every night for like, a week.

Because its easier than opening a terminal and entering all those commands.

Even windows lets you access the root drive with the file manager it just prompts you first.

ksuperkey

MASSIVE FONT THAT TAKES HALF THE ENTIRE SCREEN FOR A SINGLE LINE
And
lots
of
wasted
space
so
stylish!
Not to mention the systemd deps and flat cancer.

you are using the tool wrong.
KDE is meant for powerusers, of course you can find bugs in places nobody wants to fix.
You are supposed to run every program you can as regular user.
Just press F4, enter the command and F4 to close it.
Running the entire application as root is really dumb

This is actually because you are literally running the program *as* the root user, so it ignores any custom config/theme of your current user and instead tries to find configs of the root user.

So you could argue that it's 100% working as intended

windows doesn't do that when you access the root of the drive.

Linux DE devs need to get their shit together.

Neither does dolphin when you access the root of the drive. Your point?

I use Samba in my network for files. I tried KDE but Dolphin was copying files locally from a Samba share to open them, wtf? Nautilus and PCManFM work fine.

Switching between versions is bad.
I run a arch/ubuntu dualboot (need 14.04 for work) and I decided to give up on having kde4 and plasma5.
I switched to mate on the ubuntu install as I might as well go super old when all packages are old.
I found that the window manager was unusable, so I went back to kwin.
Now I use kwin+mate and full kde on the other install.

you're shortbus special :^)

You're mixing things up.

The problem you're describing comes from running a program as a different user. This has nothing to do with filesystem access, but with the way you're trying to pull it off

And in fact Windows will behave similarly if you try to do the same

When you open a program as root it applies the styles and configuration of a 'root' user to it and it is ignoring the visual styles configuration of your user account. That's a simplified explaination of your problem there. To fix it, you can just do Ctrl+Alt+F1 > login as root > startx > apply visual configuration > logout.

And Windows applies separate set of configuration for Administrator account as well if the account is active. And it will have the same issue if you will adjust visuals for the Administrator account - in this case case you have to either change the theme on existing user or theme for Administrator, because Windows is using same default theme for all accounts. If the account is inactive, then it will inherit current user configuration if the user is a local administrator.

Yes, kde is shit. Everybody knows that. Use Gnome 3 instead. With extensions, it's almost as customizable as kde itself.

You are fucking retarded. Only installing dolphin won't give you icons, fucking newfag

Use some other wm if you don't like KDE.
KDE apps are better than GNOME apps.
I don't write the news I just report it.

(You)
Install Gentoo. And mate.

>tfw installed a file manager on Arch, but never ended up using it
The terminal is just too good

...

Actually is a packaging bug, it requires to set two environment variables:
KDE_SESSION_VERSION=5
KDE_FULL_SESSION=true

I don't like gentoo. Arch is fine for me.

I miss the good old KDE.

KIO Slaves were great. Put an audio CD in, and Konq would display a FLAC directory, an MP3 directory and an OGG directory, and then transcode them as you drag-n-drop into your media player of choice.

>what is krunner

This. Too bad trinity is such a piece of shit. KDE will never be as great as 3.5.10 ever again.

desu

>KDE is dead
>Long live KDE
Good night sweet prince
