Internet Privacy

Been thinking about Sup Forums's opinion on privacy lately.

What's everyone's deal on their privacy?
Do you use social media?
Do you even give a shit about your privacy?
Is mass surveillance ethical?
To what extent do you go to so that you keep your privacy?
Are you socially retarded?

I already use Gmail for all personal and work related emails
I already use Facebook to organize events with friends
I already get half my monthly purchases from Amazon

Caring about privacy at this point is futile. I've embraced the botnet.

yes
yes
no
not very far, but still far nonetheless
I-I don't know

invasion of my privacy is the only way I know I'm alive anymore

I wrote this. I also recently ordered an amazon echo.

>Do you use social media?
no
>Do you even give a shit about your privacy?
yes
>Is mass surveillance ethical?
no
>To what extent do you go to so that you keep your privacy?
not far enough, but I do take precautions
>Are you socially retarded?
no

found the social retard

>What's everyone's deal on their privacy?
Moderate, unfortunately.
>Do you use social media?
Yes. Only access facebook from a quarantined browser
>Do you even give a shit about your privacy?
Yes.
>Is mass surveillance ethical?
No. Its the same as living in a police state
>To what extent do you go to so that you keep your privacy?
Isolation is the key.
Don't use facebook and linkedin from one single email account. Mails should be different for each account and they should not refer to each other. So no back up email account. Never use phone number in any google service.

I never give my windows VM any network.

My smartphone is actually turned into a dumbphone

I'll move to a country outside of 5 eyes. Otherwise I will soon go and set my own VPS in a shithole country and tunnel my traffic from there.

I keep my hard drive and flash drive encrypted.

I have my own home made cloud storage

>Are you socially retarded?
To some extent. I only communicate with my parents living abroad, my fiance, colleagues and a select few of my friends. I don't really socialise with my/my fiance's uncles/aunts.

I guess my information leak is my mobile devices (tablet and phone) and the people who talk to me frequently.

And here is my security recommendations.

Have MAC or RBAC enabled. Don't log in as a root.
Only install the softwares from your distro's secure repo
Use the Grsec kernel with PaX patches.
Use uBlock origin. HTTPS everywhere, Disconnect and Decentraleyes.
Use a Secure DNS.
Never keep yourself logged into anything.
Use a password manager. Best way is to maintain own encrypted spreadsheet.
Never use flash.
Install and keep firewall enabled at startup.
Keep bluetooth and printer service disabled by default.
Never give your windows VM any network access.
Do not bank or shop online unless you really have to. NEVER INSTALL YOUR BANK'S APP IN YOUR PHONE.
Randomly change all your 16 digit passwords. Use your spreadsheet to keep track of it.
Analise your data traffic to check for network tapping.
Always keep a mirror backup of your data. Create your own cloud storage if you are really serious.
Lastly, only visit trusted websites

>Protip:
You cannot "download" or "install" security

Interesting you say that.
I am having a difficult time wondering if I should care about my privacy and become a total nutcase tinfoil hat guy from the perspective of others or as you said embrace the botnet and become a sheep to our governments.

found the second social retard

Well I'm not all that secure, but I do a little bit.
I run OpenBSD, but not encrypted drive.
I don't use social networking, but I use gmail. I use other search engines though.
I don't use cloud shit.
I don't have smartphone.

It really depends on what you feed the botnet. You don't need the tinfoil hat, and you also don't need to feed the botnet only true and accurate information. You don't have to use email for personal use, you don't have to use IMs if you can avoid it or don't discuss any personal info over the IMs do it on a voice call, because even though they "may be monitored" someone has to actually listen to them for them to make any sense so its more trouble.

the botnet is to incompetent to be able to piece together all the data it has accumulated, the botnet is to incompetent.

Is all of this pointless for Windows users?

If you are online where you go, what you do, and what you upload is all traceable. there's no such thing as privacy online only what you fool yourself into thinking there is. Other that that no pictures please ...

If you're not politically active then many of the measures suggested ITT are more work than they're worth. I personally am an unabashed normie who'd rather delight in the conveniences of the botnet's machine learning algorithms (e.g. Tinder, Google Now, etc.) than worry about being a target of certain other machine learning algorithms used by the NSA.

What is a secure DNS?

>What's everyone's deal on their privacy?
I don't care because the NSA knows everything anywas
>Do you use social media?
yes, twitter
>Do you even give a shit about your privacy?
I use twitter anonymously, but I don't really give a shit about my privacy from the NSA because I know that google knows everything about me.
>Is mass surveillance ethical?
No.
>To what extent do you go to so that you keep your privacy?
None, I am gonna get fucked if he government wants to make me a prisoner
>Are you socially retarded?
Kind of, I am pretty introverted too

>Internet Privacy
>2016

All we need to do, in the USA at least, it pass a law overturning the 3rd part doctrine that was established in the 70s based on telephone and banking crime cases.

For some reason, the courts think that because I share information with Company A, I don't want it to remain private between me and Company A; and the government has a right to the information without due process or constitutional protection of the 5th Amendment.

>What's everyone's deal on their privacy?
It belongs to me and me alone, and the people I explicitly choose to share it with

>Do you use social media?
Does Sup Forums count?

>Do you even give a shit about your privacy?
Yes

>Is mass surveillance ethical?
Depends on your definition of ethical

>To what extent do you go to so that you keep your privacy?
VPN, uBlock+uMatrix etc., hardened browser (tweaked settings) to resist fingerprinting, hardened distro (PaX, SELinux, grsec, toolchain etc.), FDE, throwaway emails, probably some other things I'm forgetting

>Are you socially retarded?
I avoid human contact where unnecessary

>Do you use social media?
Snapchat. I think it tracks your location, but my phone already does, so I don't really care.
>Do you even give a shit about your privacy?
Yeah, but I like to think I'm realistic with my wants in that department.
>Is mass surveillance ethical?
Not what the USA is doing.
>Are you socially retarded?
I'm socially autistic, maybe. High functioning, but autistic.

>Never install your bank's app in your phone
Why? This is something I might just trade my privacy for since it's so convenient.

I'm gonna preface this by saying I'm Australian, although that largely wouldn't change much.

>What's everyone's deal on their privacy?
Not overly fussed. Definitely not as much as I should be, if Sup Forums is anything to go by.

>Do you use social media?
Only Facebook.

>Do you even give a shit about your privacy?
Again, not overly. Probably should more, but eh. If I get pinged for piracy, I get pinged for piracy. It's shitty that my info can be taken and sold on, but I guess I limit that as much as I can while still making using technology fun, not a chore.

>Is mass surveillance ethical?
Oh, fuck no.

>To what extent do you go to so that you keep your privacy?
I don't tell people my passwords! And that's mostly it. I'm probably already being watched by Chinese people who are pilfering my bank details as we speak.

>Are you socially retarded?
I don't believe so, no.

>SELinux
Literally made by NSA.

>Literally made by NSA.
Do you even know what SELinux is?

Yes, do you?

It's a permissions system

in b4 “but the NSA sabotaged permissions on linux, you should chmod every file to 777 to avoid the botnet”

idiot

just parroting your retard logic back at you, m8

Don't use social media.
Somewhat but not much I can do about keeping it.
Lol..?
Not much.
Yeah

I used to care about privacy but then it occurred to me: what's the point? I'm not a dissident or anyone important or powerful. Just a data point. The privacy I lose from engaging in social media is not that tangible, but the missed opportunities from not engaging in social media are very real. My interest in privacy was totally delusional.

>What's everyone's deal on their privacy?

See above, I don't care anymore beyond the basics

>Do you use social media?

Facebook, a couple of messenger apps

Do you even give a shit about your privacy?

I care about identity theft and getting my financial info stolen but that's a separate prolem

Is mass surveillance ethical?

No but who's gonna stop it?

To what extent do you go to so that you keep your privacy?

Use a VPN occasionally, a noob Linux distro like Xubuntu

Are you socially retarded?

Yes and No. I can be quite social but make strange mistakes sometimes

>do you use social media?
never
>do you gve a shit about your privacy?
yes
>to what extent do you go to so that you keep your privacy?
Use free and open source OS for both phone and desktop, use open encryption tools, use things like Jitsi for chat and Mumble for VOiP on my server
>are you socially retarded?
no im just quiet around others, but I do have a lot of friends irl and have lived a "normie" tier life i guess

I still use social media like fcb with the old account i made back when i was unaware of the whole spying thing. I "deleted" every picture of me though, and renamed my profile with a fake name.
With time, i will probably "delete" it, same for my gmail accounts.
I try to care about my privacy, but i am still stuck in the botnet.
This week, i got busted on 4chains in my interning office work. The booster shot worked quite well, so now i'm shitposting through tor.
I am also, probably, socially retarded. Hard to guess tough.

I care about my privacy but I also run these experiments to see how much I can do/"they" know;
>Do you use social media?
Yes, but registered with fake name & with mail from anonymously registered domain.
>Do you even give a shit about your privacy?
Yes, also the privacy of my family and friends.
>Is mass surveillance ethical?
No, I understand it's a mighty tool against the baddies, but it's so easily abused.
>To what extent do you go to so that you keep your privacy?
I use an anonymous registered domain with random email addresses to register things like LinkedIn and Instagram. Everything goes through a VPN. Running adblocker, Privacy Badger, Disable WebRTC and Decentraleyes, plus a load of other things/
>Are you socially retarded?
I'm known as paranoid and as the thin foil guy.

Note: My Instagram got blocked yesterday because of rule violations. I had the most correct Instagram out there, no fake followers, decent images. I did change my password through a VPN, which I think is the cause. Same goes for eBay btw.

NOOOPE, fuck the botnet

>What's everyone's deal on their privacy?
Corporations and governments shouldn't aggressively try to mine data as has become popular now.
>Do you use social media?
Chat clients, not more.
>Do you even give a shit about your privacy?
Everyone does to some extent, I do quite a lot.
>Is mass surveillance ethical?
Nope.
>To what extent do you go to so that you keep your privacy?
Host my own email server, cloud storage, use no Google, Apple, or Microsoft services, Android without Google Play Services, run Gentoo, keep the vast majority of my software open source.
>Are you socially retarded?
No. It's not tinfoil hat when it's a proven thing to happen. People calling "tinfoil hat" are implying data mining isn't real, which is naive.

>What's everyone's deal on their privacy?
They don't care. They would rather be stupid sheep following all the cool new trends.

>Do you use social media?
Rarely. I use a couple of things like Facebook and Snapchat and I'm very careful about things that appear. I prefer to schedule face to face meetings.

>Do you even give a shit about your privacy?
If that wasn't obvious yet, yes.

>Is mass surveillance ethical?
If I can avoid mass surveillance, I don't see why they're catching why "terrorists".
Someone who is going to majorly damage the country is not stupid enough to share it on Facebook, so I think the main motivation behind mass surveillance is blackmail to silence opposition.

>To what extent do you go to so that you keep your privacy?
Encrypted disk, hide browser identifiables and use a VPN. Windows is not allowed on my network.
Not too much apart from that.

>Are you socially retarded?
Absolutely not. That makes you stand out.

He didn't just say that!

>uBlock+uMatrix
Umeme

I have a computer I use for everyday stuff that does little to avoid being monitored, that's for my Facebook, eBay, general stuff, etc
My laptop on the other hand solely uses encrypted partitions, Internet traffic is routed through tor and then a vpn, the only email I use on it is a false name, I never sign into personal things on it, I made sure all unnecessary ports are closed, password is 10 random characters, webcam is removed, ice weasel is the only browser I use with plugins to block JavaScript, ads and it will only use https, not http, and I only use it on public wifi or unprotected connections that I stumble across, there's a bunch of other irrelevant crap but that's the main stuff for anonymity, also if you've used a personal email on the computer it will be remembered in google's servers, that's why I have a seperate laptop for things I don't want monitored, it's a hassle but if you have strong enough reasons for wanting anonymity it works

>privacy

The only privacy I'd expect these days would be inside a soundproof room.

>a country outside of 5 eyes
first: what 5 eyes?

I assume "5 eyes" would be some NSA-like organization

second: which contries would qualify as "non-5 eyes" countries?

>Have MAC or RBAC enabled
why is this necessary when I am the only user of my computer, behind a firewall?

Found the social retard

every server you access has it's own logs, logging your IP adress.
Your ISP knows your IP adress at every moment (and even into the past) --> if someone asks (not only govt.) they can tell them your adress --> the only way to get more privacy is to minimize your network traffic --> not accessing many sites, blocking external sources (images, iframes, ads).

There is a counter-intuitive paradox at the heart of the security vs. privacy debate which is that private data can be anonymised while being scrutinised, unless and until it is flagged for investigation follow-up. Personally, I don't particularly have an issue with people monitoring my online traffic and other stuff because I have nothing to hide. My only issue would be if they start monetising my data or sharing it with people who didn't strictly need it to keep me and you safe.

>sound proof room
not using a room to shield against the deadly chemtrail brainwave HAARP radiation and stopping any brainwaves from getting out!

5 eyes is the combined intel agencies (more especially their listening capabilities) of the USA, Canada, the UK, Australia and NZ. A global comms surveillance net.

>I have nothing to hide
found the nazi!

so countries that are "non 5-eyes" would be any countries where USA doesn't have any influence?
Buhtan? (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhutan)

top kek

Better than having to listen to traffic all day desu

>What's everyone's deal on their privacy?
>Do you use social media?
> not at all, except that I have a twitter account to follow some tech bloggers, but I have never posted.
>Do you even give a shit about your privacy?
> yes, inasmuch as I am vigilant against identity theft and fraud, and cyber stalking.
>Is mass surveillance ethical?
> I would distinguish between mass surveillance and mass monitoring. We have been mass-surveilled irl for a very long time and no-one in the mainstream has had much of an issue about that. As long as the proper legal, procedural and constitutional protections are in place, I'm am relaxed in principle about security and law enforcement agencies extending their purview to online activities, yes.
>To what extent do you go to so that you keep your privacy?
> I would characterise myself as a Normie-plus level dude. I don't use passwords like "password", but nor do I keep all my files on a single encrypted sim card that I can swallow if the feds come bursting through the door. I'm somewhere to the right of mid-spectrum I guess. I'm here via a VPN for instance.
>Are you socially retarded?
> Not in the least. I'm a decent-earning, married, sociable, fairly likeable guy with an interest in the world and the people around him. I love beer, rugby, girls, reading, computers, current affairs, history, architecture, porn, boxing, swimming, my cat, my family, and food. I do, however hate Captcha.

You fucking cucks, surveillance is stopping terrorism. Kill yourselves for wanting Americans to die.

Here is your (you)

Goebbels was the master of the straw man polemical technique. The straw man technique not only sets up and then destroys opponents that do not exist, but also falsely circumscribes the logical implications of a position to conceal its defects or dishonesty.

To wit: I never said that having nothing to hide was the full extent of what must be considered. For instance, I wouldn't want to think that there were nameless armies of intelligence and law enforcement personnel able to access and view video of me masturbating, or (God forbid) for that video to make its way onto the internet - not because my sordid little wanks are illegal, but because it would be excruciatingly embarrassing (I have a small penis).

Similarly, and again this is classic straw man / Goebbels stuff, you have blithely side-stepped the key point of my earlier post, which is that it is possible to MONITOR online activity and data without IDENTIFYING its author UNTIL it raises a flag. Privacy and anonymity are not incompatible unless and until probable cause exists - exactly the same test as exists for the issuance of a warrant irl. You're welcome.

Yes goyim, the terrorists are trying to make a revolution happen under the guise of Islam!

No mate, the US obviously has influence far beyond the membership of Five Eyes. Five Eyes is however a very exclusive club - these are five countries that basically trust each other with their lives, to put it crudely, and have admitted each other into the innermost circle of their confidence.

Five Eyes is the most intimate, wide-ranging and mutually transparent arrangement that has ever existed between sovereign nations for the gathering and sharing of classified data that has ever existed, because it occurs in real-time. (P.S. Snowden and Manning nearly blew it up - Snowden particularly).

>What's everyone's deal on their privacy?
Nobody really cares about privacy until it hurts them. This is a thought of a someone who can't think far ahead. For the most security minded, privacy is a matter of freedom and oppression. Right to privacy allows us to be freedom certain consequences we would normally do by ourselves without anyone involved. Lack of privacy kills those alone time.
>Do you use social media?
If you count Sup Forums as "social media" then by all means. Otherwise, no.
>Do you even give a shit about your privacy?
Yes. I value my privacy like I value my car/computer/house. Its something I have and no other has the right to take away. I could SELL them my privacy but on my own accords and terms.
>Is mass surveillance ethical?
It never is. Never justified unless the state considers everyone a criminal by default.
>To what extent do you go to so that you keep your privacy?
No social media accounts. No names given to anyone unless its for official reasons like banking/government social security/work. Using multiple fake email for everything except official reasons (see above). Deleting cookies/history after each session.
>Are you socially retarded?
To a degree this would make me a social retard. But I do have friends that I talk to, a best friend and handful of very close friends that I'd consider helping out with money/family issues.

>What's everyone's deal on their privacy?
I want privacy. What happens to my information and data is my business. No one else should be profiting off of it.
>Do you use social media?
Hell to the no.
>Do you even give a shit about your privacy?
Very much, but there are some things that are too convenient to let go of. For example, DuckDuckGo ain't shit compared to Google.
>Is mass surveillance ethical?
Nope, not by governments and especially not by corporations. I think that the Patriot Act was the biggest Big Brother move ever made. Kind of ironic that republicans think democrats will be the ones to push the country into 1984.
>inb4 hurr libtard
Nah m8, just a concerned, unaffiliated immigrant.
>To what extent do you go to so that you keep your privacy?
Been trying to go full FOSS+GNU 4 lyfe, it's been proving a might difficult seeing as how Linux software is nowhere near as good as proprietary shit. If only programmers can into UI design so that FOSS stuff is actually usable.
>Are you socially retarded?
B-baka... I-it's not like I want to be or anything.

>Anime loving faggot is a cuck
Typical

>What's everyone's deal on their privacy?
I have a Facebook that I barely use, a throwaway twitter, and a LinkedIn. I don't like putting my personal life online. I do like secure synchronization solutions where the server provider can't read my data and all my shit is deleted if I change my password (Firefox Sync, Google Chrome sync [only with advanced passphrase option], Lastpass. I use gmail but for confidential stuff it gets attached as an encrypted file or not put through Gmail. For sensitive chat topics I use Pidgin with my Google account and the OTR extension.

>Do you even give a shit about your privacy?
I do but i'm not a tinfoil hatter. I'll browse what I want. That being said I use non-ISP DNS that doesn't perform logging, and when I travel (often) I use VPNs when on open wifi networks (guest wifi rarely provides a WPA Enterprise option; the only provider I've seen offer it is iBahn).

>Is mass surveillance ethical?
I think that mass surveillance and backdooring shit by the government against US citizens is not ethical. Foreign governments spying on other countries - well yeah, everyone wants to watch out for their own.

>Are you socially retarded?
Not completely.

>What's everyone's deal on their privacy?

>Do you use social media?
No
>Do you even give a shit about your privacy?
Yes.
>Is mass surveillance ethical?
No.
>To what extent do you go to so that you keep your privacy?
If I told you that, it wouldn't be private.
>Are you socially retarded?
Probably. No friends or family contact.

>Do you use social media?
Facebook, gmail, and a twitter full of fake info for the sake of easy logins to certain sites
>Do you even give a shit about your privacy?
Yes Im trying to get educated and apply myself. Dumped chrome and sole firefox
>Is mass surveillance ethical?
Gray Im in the military so...
>To what extent do you go to so that you keep your privacy?
Don't know yet
>Are you socially retarded?
A tad bit

>Do you use social media?
Practically have to in order to speak to friends
>Do you even give a shit about your privacy?
Yes of course
>Is mass surveillance ethical?
No
>To what extent do you go to so that you keep your privacy?
Not that much, I use duckduckgo, disconnect.me and stay away from google most of the time. I'm just aware that im being spied on but don't know how to stop it
>Are you socially retarded
A tiny bit

>What's everyone's deal on their privacy?
I care about it, I do what I can to protect it, I don't put faith in anyone else to do it for me since it's mine and I'm responsible for it.

>Do you use social media?
If you mean do I use what today's society considers to be "social media" as in Facebook, etc then no, I don't use Facebook. I've been "social online" since the 1970s (seriously) and I helped create the Internet as it exists today so the people I've socialized with have been online just as long as I have - we invented this shit, kids, been there, done that, still doing it, will be doing it long after you all start calling it yet another fucking stupid name.

>Do you even give a shit about your privacy?
See the first answer above.

>Is mass surveillance ethical?
Absolutely, without question.

>To what extent do you go to so that you keep your privacy?
Whatever I'm technologically capable and able of doing which is considerable given my background and experience.

>Are you socially retarded?
You do realize that only a socially retarded moron on Sup Forums would dare ask such a retarded question, right, you fucking retard?

Right.

>only visit trusted websites
>trusted websites won't pop my cherry

Quantum Insert and Foxacid takes care of that, user.
