Dicking stations thread

Love them? Hate them? Who makes the best ones?

nice tribs
dock 2503.

The company that makes the actual laptop usually ends up making the best one for a given laptop, stupid.

>he thinks "docking station" means "port replicator"
>they're not the same things
>stupid fucking people will be the death of us all

>Using a computer

When will the meme end

>Dicking stations

Why does apple do not make these things.

I think Dell make pretty good ones, btw.

once wrote dicking stations instead of docking stations on a customer job sheet. hilarity ensued.

this one is pretty good for my t420s

Please tell me the difference between a dock and a port replicator.

X230 with Ultrabase 3 reporting in.

The overall build quality is a huge a step down from the T60/T61 dock. The connector fails to register properly 1/20 times, causing a blue screen when I boot into Winshit. If I undock with my laptop on, the sound driver disables itself till next boot. Thanks Lenovo.

>lelnovo jewed the design so x220t couldn't use it
>all it takes to fix it is removing the shitty sliding thing
Thanks guys

X220T has its own dock that's more suited for it.

Docks are Port replicators are basically USB hubs with extra functions

Yeah, but there's literally no reason for them to design that dock to prevent a x220t from using it

True. I never really understood what that sliding plastic piece is supposed to do anyway.

It's a retention mechanism, so you don't fuck up the connector by bumping the laptop

I have Ultrabase 3 (the one with DVD-RW drive).

The drive in the dock can be swapped with HDD which is a nice feature to have.

I'd seriously love to see a resurgence of docking stations with the new trend of eGPUs for laptops. Make a dock with a PCI-E x16 3.0 slot in it, and power for up to 250w TDP or whatever with 2 6+2 pin PCI-E power leads, and the laptop docks right onto that shit.

Thinkpad Advanced Dock gave ya a PCI-E slot in the dock, even if it was super-low-profile, so it was fucking awesome.

I had one of those older Advanced docks many years and actually used the PCI slot it provided, was pretty slick at the time with a Voodoo3 2000 PCI card in it.

I doubt they'd ever do such a thing anymore because onboard GPUs can be pretty fucking powerful nowadays and again, ThinkPads are not gaming machines even though they can be used for some gaming, that's not their intended purpose so the best you're going to do is using the ExpressCard slot for an eGPU as needed.

Never cared to game that much on any ThinkPad I've ever owned - just picked up a nearly flawless T430 with 9-cell + 12-cell slice at a pawn shop for $220 and still mucking around with it.1600x900 display, but the Intel HD 4000 GPU sadly. Regardless, having it in this condition PLUS the 12-cell slice (which retails for like $280 and costs even $140+ on eBay in used condition) basically means I'm looking at 15+ hours of use if I decide to go mobile.

Still behind my Dell Latitude E6400 9+12 cell which can do just shy of 20 hours, it'll be interesting to see if I decide to keep the T430 or toss it on craigslist and make a profit of some local boob that doesn't have a clue.

...

>dock 2503.
This, fucking GOAT docking station right here.
>all these hideous gamer eGPU docks coming out now that use Thunderbolt
>Thinkpads had the same shit in a classier case 10 fucking years ago

This desu senpai

The best docks are the newer HP and DELL docks. They have up to triple monitor 2x/2x DVI/DP + 1x VGA, eSATA sometimes, USB 3.0 with extra power for charging or whatever, and keyed locks. The DELL ones can actually lock into a special monitor stand, which puts the power and eject buttons onto the stand itself, which is pretty neat, and makes the dock have a 0 foot print because its under the monitor.
Often times people seem to forget how much space a dicking station takes up, usually twice the space of a monitor on a stand.

Pic related.

Lenovo docks suck, especially the consumer dock, where it plugs into that weird port next to the power plug. Wtf is that shit. Every other dock sucks more than lenovo docks. Especially 3rd party ones, wtf were u thinkin m8.

heh
heh heh

This. I have mine on a little tv dinner table off to the side of my desk. I can just drop my memepad in there and forget about it.

I wish dell made a dock station with built in monitor stand for Ultrasharps. I'd be a 10/10 device.

You can just stick a monitor on top that docking station. Dell made it so that stand will make two of the same type of monitors can be at the same height. If the monitor on the dock-stand is fully lowered down, and the one not on the stand is fully raised, they will be at exactly the same height.

sure ya did
