Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook). ---- If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance). Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
Recommended models: T420 - 14", normal size X220 - 12.5", ultraportable ---- Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops) >Used machines are plentiful and cheap. >Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet. >Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels. >Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models. >Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop. >Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain. >The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad. >Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support. ---- Used ThinkPad Buyers Guide: ktgee.net/tpg
Post boot speeds! I'm down to 30 seconds on an x200.
Lucas Ortiz
~20 seconds
Eli Lopez
when will this meme die
Nathaniel Jenkins
>that glow affs?
Asher Roberts
I meant 20 seconds from cold start to desktop.
Matthew Thompson
hopefully never dankpads are the greatest
Daniel Wilson
Found an x300 locally for $120. Worth getting? I don't see the x300 on the buyer's guide. any reason for that?
Jonathan Hernandez
x300 is great but not $120 great. Search for x301 for true patrician tier thinkpad.
Isaac Rivera
I didn't even know it existed. It's basically an incremental sidegrade to the x201?
Logan Johnson
Whats the difference between the X230 and the T430? Looking to buy a thinkpad for CS classes and narrowed it down to pretty much these two but they seem identical.
Camden Green
I've got a AUD $1000 to spend, what should I get instead of a MacBook Air. I'm looking for lightness more than anything and battery life.
Connor Jackson
x series are a LOT smaller than the T series. the only downside is that the x230 only takes slim drives (7mm I think) and it only has a 1366x768 screen (there's an IPS option so that makes up for it a bit). the nice thing about the t430 is that it's a bit bigger, as a dvd drive slot that you can replace for a second hard drive, and it has a 1600x900 option
It mostly comes down to what you prefer. Do you want thin and light while sacrificing resolution, or do you want resolution at the cost of a surprisingly larger laptop
Alexander White
why are you not just using systemd-analyze? I thought debian moved to systemd?
Hunter Rogers

did I hit the jackpot with my t420? The keyboard is in like perfect condition, the battery is at 98.7% capacity also can anyone tell me what driver I need for this? I'm running windows 10 64 bit on this t420
Ian Hernandez
I don't think I get it. Can someone explain the thinkpad meme to me?
Adam Kelly
bought a thinkpad E560 for 700$ how well did i?
Owen Peterson
you need to be a sperg to understand the meme.
you don't? lucky you. quick. escape before you fall. get yourself e better laptop.
Parker Lewis
Ayy lads, why my x220 audio all whack?
Got an x220 and noticed that the speakers are not so great. My x61t speakers seem better. Did I fuck up drivers somewhere or something?
Levi Gomez
No, laptop speakers are generally tinny as fuck.
Lucas Martin
Anyone know of a wifi "mpcie" card that's compatible with the WWAN slot on a T430s?
I've replaced my mPCIe with an eGPU and would like to not have to live with USB wifi
The WWAN "mPCIe" port doesn't seem to be PCIe based (possibly USB bus?) as the eGPU and the WLAN cards both don't work in it.
Matthew Price
ar9380 3x3 abgn 450mbps it's the long type that fits in the 3g slot
Hunter King
Weird that it is so shit though, like full volume can still barely hear youtube levels of shit.
Never had that problem on other pads.
Lincoln Morgan
Yeah the T61 and D630 had pretty good speakers in their day for some reason, very warm sounding.
Jonathan Martinez
Has someone bought his chinkpad from this seller at taobao?
This guy sells modded X220 and T420 with FHD - 2k IPS screens installed.
Bentley Turner
>buys E series, instead of the T series >ignoring all guides and shitposting here proudly that "bought a thinkpad E560 for 700$ how well did i?" >to the trash it goes
simply kill yourself.
Jayden Bell
Bought a T61 about two years ago.
It's collecting dust. Fucking useless piece of shit laptop.
Cooper Price
Breuhs, is there anything useful to be put in the MiniPCI slots of T60s?
Christopher Jones
What is the cheapest thinkpad one should get this days?
I was thinking about T61 but >DDR2 Should i go for a T400 then?
Jaxon Bell
Hey /tpg/, just bought this thinkpad and would like to know if I messed up.
The deets: Core i5 No HDD (Rails and cover inatact I think) No battery Charger Ultrabase
Should I have gotten one with a battery, because everyone seems to just buy a new one when they get theirs.
Christopher Carter
Is your Bluetooth working? Cause my x220's Bluetooth isn't and I assume that's what it is. I haven't found any drivers to fix it either.
Christian Ward
~14.2 seconds, Dell Latitude E6420, i7-2630QM true quad, 8GB DDR3, 7200 rpm Hitachi hard drive, cold boot to the login window (some of us do actually make use of password security, you know).
It can actually cold boot in about 8 seconds if I set a static IP for my Gigabit NIC but since I use wireless I have to leave it with DHCP enabled so I lose a few seconds with that connection.
Kevin Davis
x200 pretty cheap
Aaron Young
Hello all.
Leo Johnson
Did it age well? I feel like if you bought a used one from eBay it would smell like burnt plastic and silicon
Leo Bell
Maybe worse than this poor cunt
Liam Wilson
Only 1 left, grab it fast.
Oliver Hernandez
I just can't win with my x60t that I swapped a 1400x1050 display in. One problem after another. I fix one thing and break another. I give up. I just wanted to have and oldschool ThinkPad to keep in mint condition.
Joseph Sullivan
T60, everything is supported everywhere and will continue to be supported, you can get cheap used DDR2 on eBay and AliExpress Otherwise T400 There not much point to the T61
Dominic Moore
Then why didn't you just buy one that worked instead of getting one that (apparently) has so many issues?
Ayden Phillips
Oh no I did. I swapped a 1400x1050 screen into but my impatience has caused things to break. After fixing everything my LCD decides to take a shit.
Eli Lopez
Ah, well that would do it, yep, so next time slow the fuck down and do it right lest you end up killing the very thing you're trying to save.
Landon Miller
Oh don't worry, I already did.
Zachary Reyes
Someone can tell me how install a 2k screen into a x220? Is out any documentation on how i do this?
James Kelly
No, they aren't that old. As long as you look at pictures before you buy them. I often buy them to replace parts on my x201.
Justin Howard
Not really. The X300/X301 were 13.3'' supposed to compete with the Macbook Air. youtube.com/watch?v=ZXBIinZSFns And thus they had low voltage CPUs which are fairly slow.
Dylan Sanders
Nobody in the west world did it. Only a chink madman and he didn't reveal to his comrades
Jeremiah Hill
mSATA (can use SATA2 speed only) or 2.5" Samsung Evo 850 for x220 ? Currently have Hitachi 7200 rpm sata3
Jayden Green
msata + hitachi for speed and storage. I really can't tell the difference between sata2 and 3 unless i run benchmarking tools.
Oliver Lee
If I want a cheap, durable thinkpad that will last me long time, for writing, surfing, streaming, light photo/video editing and light gaming, should I then buy: t410/20/30?
Daniel Campbell
roll
Aaron Turner
so close
Samuel Jenkins
Any ThinkPAd recommendations for learning web dev & ruby on the go? Thinking about getting a budget laptop to use in my spare time at my new job.
Juan Nguyen
thinkpad x220 or t420. if you want something higher res you can get a x240 or t440p and replace the touch pad and upgrade the screen to a 1080p one
Jason Moore
For replacing the touch pad, would it just be replacing it with a newer touch pad? Never had a ThinkPad before aha.
Caleb Green
yeah get the one for the x250 and put on it. the x240 touchpad is shit because it doesnt have physical buttons
Josiah Ward
>T420 >Windows 8.1 Does Power Manager work on it? Or is it only 7 and 10?
Nolan Ward
TFW you bought a think pad T430s for $320 and it looks like mint condition with few if any scratches.
Should be here on Monday.
My erection won't go down.
Jack Morales
My t420 is running on low power settings at 61°C. Time to repaste? Or is it just the summer time. I remember it running below 50°C in low power mode.
Justin Johnson
I cannot get Bluetooth working in Windows 10 for the life of me on my x220, I've tried installing chipset drivers, installing the hotkey program to enable fn+f5, even updating the BIOS then resetting Windows didn't work. Does anyone here have Bluetooth working??
Yeah $80 is a good deal for a laptop like that. Arrandale was a good architecture.
Hunter Cooper
clean out the fan first? Mines at ~50C docked, ambient is about 25.5C.
Jordan Evans
Shit. mines about 5 higher and its 2c ambient cooler. Might just be the i7 and dual screens though.
Jonathan Sullivan
How does an x200 compare to an x220?
Nathaniel Perry
t420s comes today :)
Matthew Smith
Test
Joshua Rogers
Is it possible to swap the wifi card on the t410? I'm thinking on putting a AC card on it.
Christopher Turner
fucked it up senpai.
kys
Ryan Moore
You'll have to find a BIOS with the WLAN whitelist removed.
Anthony Cruz
Doesn't work with jpg brah
Kevin Hall
I was testing a new imageboard app on my phone. Yeah I figured that would get fucked up on mobile. Meh
Ethan Carter
Anyone here ever use a minipci-e serial card in their x220 or same size thinkpad?
I'd really like to remove my VGA port and replace it with serial, if the miniPCIe works.
Levi Brown
How do you know if the corporate perk applied? I don't see anything that says "15% off" near the buying page
Jeremiah Robinson
it came! 4gb ram 128 gb ssd for $150 fuck yeah what distro do I get first??
Ayden Walker
xubuntu, it just werks
Anthony Butler
...
Leo Bell
Anyone tried installing OSX on x220?
Ryder Campbell
I've seen the T420 doing it, and they're the same chipset so its possible.
Josiah Miller
Yeah there's a video for it and I'm trying to install it on mine.
>mfw going to starbucks with an x220 OSX
Charles Cook
>Do not update to a BIOS version beyond 1.40 – doing so will prevent you from ever rolling back to an earlier version.
I'm fucked aren't I
Dominic Sullivan
Anyone know how to get the middle mouse button to open links and close tabs and shit like normal on an x220 with windows 10 installed?
Doing some tech support for a family member.
Jonathan Thomas
Someone is selling a X220 tablet thinkpad for $190. i dont know how good they are. im looking for a thinkpad right now and it does look nice.
Should i do it?
Oliver Collins
I paid almost that much for an x220 non-tablet. I would have to pay twice that for a tablet.
If I had the option I would get that.
Ryan Cook
I bought an adapter to turn my disc drive in my t420 into a storage slot. I now have an ssd with linux and an hdd with windows 7. Should i fill the msata slot and get OSX for the triboot?
Xavier Watson
Fedora 23 for sure
Nicholas Moore
Whats the best non-poo in the loo video review of the t420?
Lucas Johnson
Fedora Bareback is better desu famalambalam
Adam Long
You have autism
Levi Diaz
THAT RHYMES!!! Poo In Loo --- Video Review!
Hudson Johnson
shit i just made a new meme my bad
Jace Mitchell
You can always flash a new BIOS the hard way (a chip clip and EPROM programmer) unless the ECU version is also different.
Lucas Rivera
Been using a x201 for a couple of years and it died. Was thinking about fixing it but got a T420 instead. Installed the x201's memory and SSD and it started like nothing happened. Just had to install maybe two drivers and keep working. I love this shit.
Miss fingerprint reader, tho.
Luke Wood
Thinkpad 13
Leo Hall
Refurb X250 or X260 might be a good choice. I just got a X260 i3 cpu, 1366x768 IPS, 16GB ram & 500GB HD for $569 USD.
X series is sturdier than the Thinkpad 13, has the 2 battery system. CPUs are low power so you get about 6 hrs use.
Gavin Reed
I recently purchased a i7 1080p x260. What OS did you install on it? What BIOS settings did you change?
Cameron Fisher
>i3 >1366x768 >$569
Sounds like money well spent.
Camden Sanders
Still wondering how much cheaper the Chromebook version will be.
Thomas Lee
Got around to getting to the module itself, it's fine, and now I have no clue why Windows won't detect it
Lucas Bell
This, if you're gonna buy new, get something high end that wont become an out dated pos in a few years with a low res screen.
