If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I have a T420. I want to buy a mini dock plus and attach a microphone, headphones, keyboard, mouse, and Ethernet. I think I also want to upgrade to a t430 in the near future.

Is the mini dock plus series 3 fully compatible with both t420 and t430? What about x220/x230?

Is the t430 worth upgrading to from the dankpad? How much more powerful is the nvs5400 board vs. the 4200 or in my case just hd3000? How much better is the ivy bridge chipset vs sandy bridge?

Mini dock 3 is fully compatible with all those models.
Ivy bridge is a very minimal upgrade from Sandy. The HD 4000 is about 15% faster than the 3000.

Sorry, meant 25%.

one job he said

What's up with the blurry picture?
Who remembers old tpg pic related?

If you are getting a **30 get the one with usb3. It will just be a usb2 port on your t420 but the dock is apparently still compatible. Get the one with 4337 in the model name, because the 4338 doesnt have audio ports.

I liked the 1400x1050 version better.

How does /tpg/ cover their webcam?

disconnect it

Electrical tape.

So are the X220 bios lost to time or what?

>blurry as fuck OP image
>no /tpg/ in subject field

5/10 at least you tried

>posting the absolutely disgusting version
>way out of proportion
>colours are incorrect

this user has good taste

I have a few questions about the T460p:
>Is battery life with the 6 cells battery better than the T460 with the biggest battery ?
>Is it worth it getting the default 256go ssd for 80 € more than the 500go 7200rpm hdd or if not is there any ssd model that could fit in the 2nd ssd slot with decent (128go ? 256go ? ) storage capability for under 100 euros ?

Thanks !

Sorry I'm an idiot. Here's the one that was used back then and it indeed is much better and the colors are right this time

>still not 1400x1050
If I had my x60t on me I'd post it desu senpai.

are you guys stupid?
on the thread of BIOS-Mod the wiki link theres a zyppishare link with the version 1.40 modded without whitelists and Advanced menu. dont bother with any of the rghost links.

jesus, Sup Forumstards aint wrong, you all idiots need to lurk a bit more.

Sup Forumstards by default are all newfags desu senpai. They need to lurk more and stop being autistic kids.

I just got a t420. It came with some white spots on the screen. Is there a way to fix this, or would I have to replace the screen?

Wow I feel retarded, I'm gonna say that I missed it because the post was small and no one responded to it. Is this a reliable file? Doesn't exactly come with a MD5

if it helps im gonna flash it in an hour, need to arrive house and pop in the windows HDD.

Pressure marks can't be fixed, upgrade to the 1600x900 panel from the alienware 14

Have a look at BIOS_LOGO.TXT before you do. Wondering if it works with animated gifs.

OK you guys finally won me over and I grabbed an X220 tablet with the dock. This machine is a workhorse, and the dock means it'll fill in as a desktop machine (since I don't play many games).

My only concern is the CPU temperature. The fan is ALWAYS audibly running. Routine browsing gets it up into the 60s C, and it hovers in the mid 90s if I'm running Minecraft. I've taken off the keyboard and blown it out with compressed air. Should I be worried? Is it worth disassembling to re-apply thermal grease?

Using it without the dock lowers the temperature a few degrees. Running a live CD of Fedora makes it a few degrees cooler, too.

>>Could I get an answer please ? i think you should be able to answer sicnce you all own a thinkpad.

1. No, it will be worse because the T460p has a quad core. Get the 72 WHr 9 cell.

2. Buy your own 2.5" SSD and fit it.

Does anyone have a problem with unity being a complete fucking slow shit? Even gnome is more usable than that. It takes forever to open firefox. This is on a x230 btw.

Your machine is five years old. Wouldn't hurt to pull it apart, thoroughly clean the fan, and apply some high quality grease.

Also, unfortunately, the X series is known for running hotter than the t series etc... just not much room in there. But new grease should help.

Who's X220 + Linux mustard race here?

What is the best way to remove laptop badges without leaving a mark?

Inordinately sharp knife, steady hand. I have a knife dedicated to removing all sorts of stickers, even the warranty ones.

Heat gun on low. Peels them right off without leaving too much goop.

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep an eye on the temps for now, and a complete disassembly will make a fun project for a rainy day.

had but it stopped working after a bios upgrade and i did not have anything to fix it with. i think that it removed some efi thing

>1366x768
>mustard race

x220, 16gb ram, 500gb 850 evo running xubuntu, got a dock and a couple of brand new batteries today (44 and 44++) really happy with it. Perfect for office work, random tinkering, shitposting.

These thinkpads you are recommending are really expensive and less strength in terms of GPU to other brand laptops, what gives?

reposting in
i use mint and im not sure its a good distro

Do the x220 and t420 use the same RAM? I have a busted x220 and was wondering if I could put it in my t420 slot

>16gb ram

Pointless

This. My machine has 16gb and barely using 2.

x220t debian here

Mine is in the mail.

Waiting is suffering.

Got mine today, but the ssd is in the mail.
Life is suffering.

I currently have an unused T420 I don't want to sell, may come in handy sometime. I was thinking about using it as a server with ethernet connection, place it on the shelf next to the router and leave running 24/7. Is it a good idea? Would it be wasteful in electricity compared to a raspberry for example? It would be a web and file server, so mostly idle. Also should I leave the battery in or remove it, if I want to save electricity?

I see no reason that wouldn't work.

I'd remove the battery, unless you want it to act as a sort of UPS.

I am buying a new laptop in a few months, I need a durable, powerful laptop. I will be studying programming, my budget is around 800$. Any suggestions ?

you don't need a "powerful" laptop to study programming.

Just get something you like and feel is a fair price.

>Uses wallpaper I made with love and care.

So I stopped playing video games, which means I can safely downgrade my computer performance wise because I'll never notice the difference.

Is the Sandy Bridge generation still the sweet spot? I'm willing to spend up to $400 on everything at least some of which will be on a battery and a good SSD.

Portability is important in the sense that I can walk a few blocks down to the library with it and bring it to school in a backpack. Don't expect a significant difference from 14" to 12.5".

I'm also totally open to Dells or HP, they seem cheaper in general but most reviews point out horrendous battery life - at least for HP.

Any advice as to what I should look at? Where is the best price/perf now? I'm considering a e6430 with a quad core

ebay.com/itm/Dell-Latitude-E6430-14-Intel-Quad-Core-i7-3720QM-2-60GHz-8GB-RAM-500GB-HDD-/401127699110?hash=item5d6512f2a6:g:JOwAAOSwUfNXSKFi

Looks like a good deal to me

>massive bezel
>16:9

>I stopped playing videos game
>so to save money I will buy a new 400 dollar laptop
Just grab an x200, C2D is perfectly fine. Probably 100 dollars American.

You can go all the way back to Penryn if you want, it's still good enough for regular tasks. Sandy Bridge has best price/performance, but with Lenovo's Thinkpads, the older you can tolerate, the better machine you'll get. I "downgraded" from a T420 to a T601F and have only noticed a couple of instances where the CPU performance difference is obvious, while the screen, keyboard, and overall usage experience is so much better.

I use it on my 220 as well, good job

I sold my desktop so right now my only machine is a 1st gen i3 consumer toshiba POS that I'll probably sell for like 80. This laptop will be my main PC for the foreseeable future.

True. However I can afford at least a sandy bridge. This will be my only machine. I'm considering x220 and throwing together a SFF desktop with no dGPU.

Too many options. Need to just buy something

...

>huge screen bezel and 6-row keyboard
Turns out Lelnovo is just bringing Thinkpads back to their roots after all.

It's beautiful.

Yeah it's kinda of overkill but I run a VM with Windows 7 with a couple of legacy shit programs used for inventory at work and I had only 4gbs, it wasn't that much more money wise 8gb or 16gb so I just maxed the ram.
SSD on the other hand it's great and a must on your laptops.

could you please post the wallpaper?

Not him, but here you go

...

thanks based user

...

What GPU do you have hooked up to that toaster oven?

WICKED SICK

That's a microwave idiot.

I used to play UT on a T20. PIII 700MHz, 512MB RAM, dank times

pajeet please

Next you'll tell me he doesn't actually have the GPU hooked up to it.

He obviously does, what else calculates the microwave shaders? If they are misaligned, the food wont heat

M8, i made a mousepad out of the T420 one

Isopropanol

For you.

Got an x220t one?

UEFI or BIOS for my x220?

that BIOS can be used, so far it doesnt brick my pad. see pic

that was one of the intentions i have for flashing the BIOS, animated doesnt work. the tool rejects them as not valid image, already tried

i also have a X220T, in fact i have 2, and both are very silent, dissambly it and reapply thermal grease.

x220t + Archlinux

thanks for the wallapers, i modified the x220 to add the tablet screen.

Where's the nipple?

UEFI is botnet
Go for BIOS

Doesn't have one. its a 386 so its a DOS machine.

Sexy

But x220 OSX is the master race

My t420 came with the rough clit. Are the other ones worth getting, or is this one fine?

...

hnnnng

I can't wait for the economy to get better and neat shit returns.

Get the one on the left. Soft rim is best nipple.

Has anyone ever been brace enough to click the mysterious think vantage button? Did you live to tell the tall tale?

best place to get a 9 cell for T420?

I just got my X220 Tablet this week and I've been pressing it like mad, using it to boot to Linux live CDs and poke around the BIOS.

I'm hesitant to install Linux on this thing because I'm not sure which distro is going to play nice with the reversible tablet screen and the pen. So far everything works fine with Fedora except the screen won't auto-rotate to portrait mode.

Think I'll try switching out the HD and installing Linux on a spare. It'll be easy enough to go back if I need to.

Ebay (55++ or 70++, both work)
Or just scam the recall if thats still going. (Find recallable serial number and put it in, if its already been recalled, change the last 4 characters)

Personal preference. That one's my favorite.

X220 or X230? Apart from the keyboard (which I don't think I'll mind) are there any major differences?

Keyboard and Ivy Bridge/intel HD card upgrade.
Check the wiki for detailed info on the improvements in the cpu.

fuckin splashed a micro-drip of water on my upper right keyboard. xev shows no response anymore on pgdn. persists on bios and other boot medium. how the fuck can this be? can't justify $40 for a new kb. yes, i reseated the ribbon.

Local listing has a T430 with missing HDD for $40. Too risky? He says there's a fan error. Do you think I could flip it if the only thing wrong was as extreme as a bad motherboard?

X230 has USB3.0 and mildly faster CPU, notably better integrated graphics, and a bit longer battery life

The keyboard is moot since it can be swapped for the X220's, so it's a hard upgrade over the X220

If you want to do that you should build yourself a T601 Frankenpad, so you can have a badass 1600x1200 IPS display with a quad core CPU

Is there a good replacement for the wristpad and keyboard on the x220 that wont have the oily wear?

Sup Forums I got my old T42 back that I loaned to a friend almost 3 years ago, and today managed to track down the docking station, an extended battery and a 2GB memory upgrade. It's got the Dothan 1.7 in it, running XP SP3 legal right now.

I haven't decided what to do with it other than to play old XP games on it unfortunately it only has the Radeon 7500 32mb in it. Outside has a few scratches but the rest is in good shape. I tried putting Fedora 23 on it and it ran slow as hell lol.

This brings my library to a 600e, G41, T42, T61 and an E545 that I might try to trade for a newer T series
