Is R programming a meme or should I learn it

is R programming a meme or should I learn it

Retard programming? I guess.

its a fucking meme. back in high school some kid made a calculator in R and i did mine in C++, i won the calculator contest.

>mfw it was the only thing ive ever won

If you have to ask then no. R is a specialized tool, not really a general programming language.

is it worth learning as a specialized tool

yes, it's better than stata etc

Breathing is a meme

Not really a meme, it's seeing a surge in popularity at the moment.

Hexes confirm, time to stop breathing.

>tfw suffocation is the new way of life
feels not much at all

the fact that it can easily load up various textual data formats is well worth it. handy for basic descriptive statistic and plots. just these two things bring enough value imo.

if you want to delve deeper into it, it does come with a learning curve. it has a lot of functionality and can skin a cat in many ways.

What sort of operations could it do? Just curious

I like R, it's really unrestrictive

its not a meme, but if you'd already know if you need to learn it or not based on what field you're interested in.

Use Julia lang.

I'm not interested in anything I'm just looking to gain a skill that could net me a job

It's really nice tool to have if you are interested in ML. Pretty easy to read in a file, split it into train/test/ect sets, and the ML/Plotting libraries themselves are top notch. I couldn't imagine doing anything else with it though, but that is just my personal opinion.

Probably not then. The jobs R is used in tend to be one where learning R is by far the easiest prerequisite.

Someone got a good R tutorial to get started?

R is for statistics. It's useless if you don't have a degree in statistics.

holy shit. checked

The gods have spoken

It's not a meme, lot of people use it and there are a good amount of jobs for it.

But if you have to ask you probably aren't interested in the applications it's used for.

...

OK guys, it's been fun. Guess I have to asphyxiate myself to finally become the 1337est hacker in the world.

Yeah this. I did R for awhile, and it's really meant to be used in specific applications.

Stopped now

Nice.

Sometimes I forget this video exists, and then I get really happy when I'm reminded.

...

Dubs + Hexes = Truth
Today is the day I quit that meme. Off to Sup Forums to livestream

It was basically a GUI for everything in the math.h library

For 99% of what anyone would want to do, stata is best. If you need to do something too complex/nuanced for stata, SAS is better. R is only for kiddies and poorfags.

This is incorrect. SAS is a horrid pile of shit. R is far more flexible and faster. R is also a horrid pile of shit though. So... yeah.

Very worth as an extra tool.

>Pol sci PhD here

SAS is truly annoying, but due to its age you can do more with it than any alternative. R is only popular because it is free.

R also has more community and company support nowadays. Plus is a much better choice for machine learning type tasks.

Fuck stata. Had to use that for a class. Most impossibly retarted interface with close to zero extensibility. Ended up doing half the assignments in python

Read books. I recommend "r in a nutshell" because its also a refence book. R really is a language for specific tasks, so you'll want to know the basics and then just look things up when you want to do them

>learn it
?function gives documentation
??function searches for documentation
; are optional ways to tell that a line ends
index starts at 1.

now you know R

What's the point of R when SPSS exists?

R is free

If your time is free ;~)

yea R takes a lot of time to run, but you shouldn't really use it for large applications.

>not using rcpp
R is for prototyping, if it's running slow you're either doing it wrong or shouldn't be using it

I know. Why are you telling me?

Agreeing with you senpai ;)

>i've never undertaken a large statistical analysis project
>i don't value my time
>what is reproducible research
if yes to any, keep using SPSS, spastic.

well memed

You're both incorrect. Python is a better language for any statistical or machine learning libraries.

Python is better for machine learning.
R is better for stats.

I would say python would be better in the long run though.

It's used a lot in research

It is a language for STATSTICS.

"I need high level statstics" --> use R
"What is high level statstics?" --> don't use R

What libs does Python have which compete with R for machine learning?

fug

if you are into maths or statistics, then its worth learning, pretty easy desu
