Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook). ---- If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance). Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
Recommended models: T420 - 14", normal size X220 - 12.5", ultraportable ---- Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops) >Used machines are plentiful and cheap. >Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet. >Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels. >Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models. >Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop. >Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain. >The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Thinkpads are shit Stop being poor and get a surface pro

My t530 is making weird electrical noises, like a pulsating sound. One user said it was a faulty capacitor, so I started taking apart me thinkpad and some of the screws are stuck. I asked some guys and they said that I can cut it off, which doesn't seem to be viable. I also can heat the screw up as it's in the thinkpad. What do?
Gabriel Carter
Hello guys, I need a laptop that I can take around with me to different places. Looking with something with good battery life, and fairly light. I am also going to be using in bed before I go to sleep.
What do you guys recommend?
Eli King
X230 with X220 keyboard
Luis Anderson
Not into that tablet shit.
Brody King
The X230 is not a tablet. The X230T is a tablet.
Asher Evans
I've been looking at getting a x220t, but the fucking screen is 12 inch. Is there a decent 15 inch touch screen dankpad?
Is this a pretty good deal? The guide says I should be expecting around 400 dollars, so I'm not sure if I should entirely trust this.
Robert Morris
So don't get a tablet model.
Easton Adams
It's bidding, which is why it's lower. Bidding will go up within the day that's left.
Make sure to pick up a T450 trackpad so you don't cuck yourself
Luke Miller
Okay, okay. How good is SoT? Also, what prices should I be looking for?
Dominic Stewart
The guide seems a little outdated, as least for X series prices. I would stay below $350, but the newest T I've bought was a 420 and I have no interest in the newer models, so I'm not sure.
Dylan Price
With the 9-cell, 10 hours of web browsing, though if you watch video it'll be a few hours less
If you want more battery you can get a battery slice that goes on the bottom of the laptop
Jeremiah Foster
Wouldn't I have to but another battery? What is the stock battery?
Still don't know what Thinkpad to get the X1 Carbon, X220, and X230 all look pretty good.
Brayden Miller
Sorry, it looks like I just couldn't read. By the way, do you mean to buy a separate T450 trackpad and put it on myself? Is the T440 trackpad not satisfactory? I'm just afraid to break it as the only computer modification I have done is adding an SSD to a desktop.
Alexander Rodriguez
Is the x230 noticeably faster than the x220?
Is it worth getting an x220 for dat keyboard at the cost of reduced performance?
Owen Rivera
Is a x220 with an i5, 4gb of ram, and 320gb hdd worth it for 135 bucks?
Aiden Gutierrez
Just got a t520, sans battery, hard drive, ram door, and wifi chip for $50, tell me what I did wrong and cuss me out.
Andrew Ross
With i5, 8GB ram, and SSD, no need to worry about performance.
Which one will be better at gaming? It's for a kid and he'll be playing tf2.
I'm thinking the tp might get more perf because of the lower native res.
Brody Turner
Thinkpads arent made for gaming kids
Noah Williams
I know, but I need something to keep him distracted.
Jeremiah Sanchez
anyone here use a 12 inch (x220,x230 etc) thinkpad for reading PDFs and writing documents etc? I'm worried it might be too small.
Samuel Wood
If you are only playing tf2, you might as well get the surface pro because the T420's screen is, as you mentioned, not that great.
Why? Why not get him a console?
Zachary Thompson
if it's spinning freely but not coming out, pull it out with pliers
if it's not turning, make sure you are turning it counter clockwise bro
Asher Rivera
I carry my t420 to college every day. It's pretty light.
>I'm not a pussy though.
Elijah Campbell
It's perfect for me, but my friend needs 14" to feel comfy. The backspace is kinda small and it might take a while to become accustomed to it.
Daniel Evans
12,5", its fine, but for serious, all day editing i use an external monitor.
Lucas Gray
Buy a used xbox for 50 bucks.
Adam Flores
Not on a thinkpad, but I work on a 720p 12 inch laptop, and I have my word processor set at 140% zoom. It's not entirely comfortable but a lot more portable than anything larger.
Hudson Gomez
Fuck, don't know what to do.
Jeremiah Rivera
Hey /tpg/ I'm thinking of buying an X200s but I can't seem to find one with either the L9600 or a 1440x900 screen. What gives?
Also, are there any mods I can do to it? I.E, can I upgrade the screen on any old X200s that I buy? I mainly need the battery life for whole day usage at uni and a Core2 will do the job.
Henry Robinson
>Stingrays are shit. Stop being poor and get a nice Prius.
Grayson Foster
Definitely, but then again, I'm in Yurop
Gabriel Garcia
Is spray painting your thinkpad not recommended?
Ryder Nelson
>destroying art
Ian Garcia
Looks like he's getting the surface pro.
I was just testing tf2 on the machine and it hard shut down suddenly. It wouldn't turn on with ac power or battery power and to get it back to life I had to power cycle it.
What the flying fuck.
Angel Perry
>My t530 is making weird electrical noises, like a pulsating sound.
That's a consequence of deep power saving modes of the CPU. The burst current demands when it momentarily wakes up to service tasks makes that noise. You can only eliminate it by disabling power saving modes in the BIOS.
> One user said it was a faulty capacitor
user is full of shit.
> so I started taking apart me thinkpad
...despite having no idea what you're doing aaaand.... you fucked it up. Well done.
> and some of the screws are stuck
You mean 'I used the wrong bit and stripped the heads out'. Stop now, and forget you tried. The more you do, the more you will fuck up.
Nolan Garcia
I just wanted to become my waifu
Austin Nguyen
>anyone here use a 12 inch (x220,x230 etc) thinkpad for reading PDFs and writing documents etc? I'm worried it might be too small. That's exactly why I have my X61T still. It's not too small.
Nathan Sullivan
This fellow knows what he's talking about.
Cooper Davis
Hi Louis!
Parker Stewart
new thinkpad shit aside, is this a good deal?
new x240 with i7, 8gb ram, 256gb ssd, only the screen is not IPS nor fullHD( but i guess that is replaceable) for 400€
Dylan Garcia
Nope, I only post howto webpages not vids ;-)
Aiden Fisher
Thanks for your help? It's pretty straightforward to put back together and I stopped when the bits fit but I could turn them. I'll look into the powersaving, thanks.
Xavier Wood
>new x240 with i7, 8gb ram, 256gb ssd, only the screen is not IPS nor fullHD( but i guess that is replaceable) for 400€ T240/X240 were pretty much the absolute low-point of Thinkpads. Expect it to need service within two weeks of unboxing :-(
Brody Peterson
>Thanks for your help? It's pretty straightforward to put back together and I stopped when the bits fit but I could turn them. I'll look into the powersaving, thanks. Didn't mean to be harsh, but you need to take a little care when working on these things, and if you're having trouble just getting the screws out, you're sure as hell not going to know what you're doing once you have access to the motherboard.
Go slow, ask questions first, use the right tools.
Logan Reyes
The main problem with T440 UltraNav is the lack of physical buttons on the top which makes operating the buttons a lot harder. Especially if you like to use the TrackPoint. The user experience was so bad that Lenovo reverted the design in T450 and Lenovo isn't reputed for reverting bad design decisions.
Benjamin Miller
(and, ftr, you can indeed learn faster by just giving no fucks and fucking up a lot, but the 'fucking up alot' is also going to break things you can't fix. Have spares handy.)
Austin Morris
Would it be worthwhile to just get a 450 for cheap then? I've got no modding experience and don't want to break something that I hypothetically just bought.
Ryan Howard
Can you use a screwdriver and read a manual?
Cameron Ortiz
There's a manual for this kind of stuff?
Luis Smith
who uses the fingerprint reader? what for? Does it work well?
For those guys trying to get the fhd mod on the t420 going. Word on the german forums is that apparently javie-jie is doing a redesign of the adapter board from scratch.
Luis Gomez
It shouldn't be too hard unless you're an absolute hamfinger, cannot follow instructions or just cannot be bothered with it.
If that is the case I'd recommend getting either a T430 or T450. The T430 still has the old power adapter so you can multiple ones for cheap. On the other hand if you're going to go ThinkPad for long therm having the new power adapter is better. A newer GPU and CPU are nice too but the T450 is going to be more expensive.
Nolan Bennett
>x220 >i5 2520M >1366x 768 LED HD display >4GB RAM >250GB hdd >no lenovo warranty >my town >used by a student girl >160euro Worth? I got myself a x220 with better cpu some time ago but wonder if i should get it for parts or a just in case laptop.
Blake Cook
>used by a student girl Worth
Carter Cooper
get it and scan the hdd for deleted nudes
Jason Allen
Not sure, contact person is a guy though.
Nathan Jenkins
> be a stundent with no money > GF wants a new laptop > learn up on internet > x220 is the most logical choice > GF not happy
Jayden Taylor
>not making your GF get her own laptop
Oliver Hughes
Im not interested in nudes. I bought one with better cpu, ram and ssd for more some time ago and im wondering if thats a good price for this setup.
Jason Robinson
>Im not interested in nudes. Duuuuuuude......
Josiah Ortiz
>Hello guys, I need a laptop that I can take around with me to different places. >Looking with something with good battery life, and fairly light. T450s with 9cell battery can last you a whole day without recharging (no charging cables to carry around).
>I am also going to be using in bed before I go to sleep. Look into the yoga models, or get some surface
Jaxson Cox
Probably off topic, but: I bid 450€ on a used Yoga Pro 3 on ebay. How much did I fail, Sup Forums?
Tyler Thomas
Isn't Yoga a consumer model not related to ThinkPads or enterprise laptops in general?
Jaxon Ward
Thanks I got it set up again, I thought I was going to have to buy another one!
Owen Stewart
Yes. The Yoga Pro 3 is also the newest model. There is a ThinkPad Yoga though.
Ryder Johnson
>ThinkPad Yoga It's probably as great quality as the ThinkPad Edge series.
Jayden Perry
Its is still under warranty for a year sooo
Hunter Hernandez
Shitovo decided to just slap a Thinkpad logo on anything these days so it doesn't really matter
Xavier Moore
...
Zachary Bell
When did the thinkpad turn into a black macbook?
Grayson White
Should I turn SpeedStep off?
Dominic White
How is battery life?
Jordan Ross
...
Jayden Taylor
T431s was the first one
Asher Sullivan
...
Eli Collins
So why lenovo changed the keyboard design?
Grayson Gutierrez
...
Carter Butler
Because everyone else was doing chiclet keyboards and Lenovo didn't want to feel left out
Jace Edwards
Are T450s good?
Asher Ross
...
Leo Nelson
So what is wrong with the new thinkpads other than keyboards?
Lincoln Hall
because making everything as close as possible to an ishit clone instead of retain dignity and key traits of a brand name is clearly the way to go
Samuel Edwards
Remember when they said that there will never be a ThinkPad without the TrackPoint? I guess it is still technically true if you consider only X, T and W -series as real ThinkPads.
If you do that you'll cripple the battery time although the noise should stop. You could also just plug in the power cord to stop the power save related high pitch noise from CPU use.
Jaxson Taylor
>Its is still under warranty for a year sooo Yeah, that warranty is sure comfy when you have to pay shipping both ways, don't have the machine for a month, and it comes back sloppily assembled with a brand new problem.
Andrew Wright
Specifically, you want to disable the higher C states in the CPU setup.
Jacob Butler
i found a x230 for 219€ on ebay should i try it?
Jose Robinson
Got a little dell. Any recommendations on SSDs?
Angel Allen
its a bit battle scarred ...
Carter Hill
Get a cheap sandisk 128gig, its fast.
Grayson Lee
The iGPU is noticeably faster yes, the CPU not really, the battery life is a couple hours better
You can get dat x220 keyboard in an x230 anyway so
Mason Thompson
The Surface will run TF2 better
Chase Mitchell
Why a X200s over something newer? Battery life has only gotten better since then? Any reason other than 16:10? (I do feel you there)
Robert Myers
>mfw there's a x20 for sale on ebay I have absolutely no need for it whatsoever, but I don't have one and it would be a nice addition to my collection.
