If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

First for becwuaz.

This is what five years of Lenovo does to a Thinkpad.

>obscenely expensive mobile workstation
>general office use laptop

Hardly a good comparison.

>What is a T60 IPS

>2000 eurobux for the 14" with base 1024x768 panel

notebookcheck.net/Review-Lenovo-IBM-Thinkpad-T60p-UXGA-Notebook.4404.0.html

>3500 eurobux for the 1400x1050 IPS display

T420 when new was around 1500 eurobux for a nice config

Fuck money, you were given an ips option on your business grade notebook years ago, and they took it away.

I don't know anything about computers. Can I transplant a new quad core CPU into an old X200 tablet?

I want a pen for my X220t that also has a pen for actual paper. Is there such a thing?

>Fuck money

If the demand isn't there from the customers (businesses, not faggots on Sup Forums) then why would they bother?

Also, HP is way bigger in the workstation market that uses these color critical displays, that's why they are the only ones left on the market selling 10 bit IPS panels in their laptops

T series is supposed to be flagship. The T420 feels more like it belongs in the budget category with the E or L series.

Face it, laptops are now commodity items. Market is involved in to a race to the bottom for pricing.

>can I change my CPU
What a fucking tard. Enjoy poverty.

No. The X series have soldered CPUs, but even if it were socketed, you could only put in a Core 2 Quad at best, and then you'd probably burn your house down because the X200 cooling was not even designed for standard voltage dual cores, never mind higher voltage quad cores.

Thank you, friend.

Rate the seller and the lot plz you will be very helpful m.ebay.com/itm/121947046695?_mwBanner=1#rwid

can the t420's i5 support IOMMU / VT-D

Am I getting jewed lads?

newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=9SIA9PS48J2949

Well, does it?
> dmesg | grep -e DMAR -e IOMMU
> grep vmx /proc/cpuinfo

>Linux

I guess you could check Intel's ARK.

so I take it that if nothing shows up it's not supported?

Looks good. I dare any faggot to say otherwise.

No highlighting, I guess? Try
#cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep vmx

>vmx
Is this my vt-d support? Because that was highlighted from the command earlier

Nothing showing up == not supported or not enabled in BIOS

VT-x. VT-d is a chipset feature.

Gookovo has no shame
they will slap the Thinkpad logo on any abortion these days

So vt-x but not vt-d? I don't have know the jargin and terminology and was hoping for a spoonfeed.

My T420 has a VT-d option in the BIOS. I assume that means it has it, but I've never bothered to try using it. It might require the Nvidia model, since I know you need two GPUs to use PCI-E passthrough.

alright, thanks

Here's the deal.
VT-x is a CPU-level support for virtualisation. If its flag (vmx) is set for your CPU, you're done here.
VT-d is Intel's I/O MMU implementation.
You will need:
- A chipset that supports VT-d. Chipset model for Intel are usually numbered [letter][digit][digit], e.g. Q77. Google yours to find out whether it supports VT-d.
- A BIOS that offers VT-d as a feature. Search around in your BIOS settings.

Additionally, if you want PCI(e)-passthrough, your card has to have the Function Level Reset (flr) feature.

yes and yes
the 2520m with the nvs 4200m has this
thank you very much

>55185823
>removing keys nobody uses
>more compact layout for easy access
Autistic I tell you.

>removing keys nobody uses
>Autistic I tell you.
You mean removing keys _you_ don't use.

Are the USB ports on the series 3 docking station (4337) always on? like, could I walk off with the thinkpad, but still charge my phone off the ports on the docking station?

> implying access to important function keys was improved by xx30+ keyboards
> what is XF86Back, XF86Forward

rip
I was hoping I could pass through my gpu so I don't have to boot into windows to play gta.

I don't know about that model but on Ultrabase 3 the USB are hot only when a ThinkPad is docked.

How did they manage to fuck up X series keyboard so bad? Just look at this shit.
X230 was a bit inferior but after that it's just a complete clusterfuck

>Removal of independent volume and mute keys
>Removal of media keys
>Removed Insert and put it as Fn+End
Fucking disgusting

fuck me in my ass, man.

>no back and forth keys over the arrow keys
My shitposting would be hampered beyond belief.

if this is what I have to deal with if I want to upgrade from my T420, I might look into Dell or HP

Definitely. New *60 series look like fucking toys cheap bootleg versions of a real ThinkPad. Our only hope is the retro but I wouldn't be surprised if lelnovo fucked it up

They aren't any better. Dell held off the chiclet cancer longer, but they shit up their layout in the same generation as Lelnovo. HP always had a shit layout and they switched to chiclets earlier. Good keyboards in laptops are dead.

> No Back and Forward in arrow keys block, not even the PgUp and PgDown
> No indicator lights of any kind
> New style hinges for display
> Super expensive as it will be sold only to consumers

Why do they even bother with the "Retro" edition? It is nothing like the older models.

I guess Lenovo just wants to cash out by selling this to people who have never used a pre-2011 model but have bought into the idea that ThinkPads are awesome due to good reputation from earlier years.

Placing more hope in the X62.

That's not final, is it? They could easily fix some of the things you mentioned.

It looks pretty good to me. It looks like a Thinkpad. It has its flaws, but it's imperfect rather than an abomination.

x series users, how do you make your firefox compact? i download microfox but it looks like shit.

>inb4 wangblows

I'm thinking of buying an X220 with 8GB, 480GB SSD, i5 2520m for around $500. Is that a good price or am I retarded nigger?

kill yourself thats twice the amount you should pay

idk about wangblows, but I lower the dpi to around 80

Halp, Sup Forums
I'm looking for a laptop for school use (not an architect, computer science, creative design, et al major), with the occasional Netflix viewing experience. I wrestled with several different models and brands and used history to deduct that I need something that can withstand my tardness for several years.
Requirements:
Budget: under $1000
My #1 issue while shopping has been finding a 15.6" display with decent battery life and a 1920x1080 IPS display. I don't mind "lugging" around a 5 lb laptop in my bookbag, if it means I can comfortably use side-by-side windows (research/netflix/skype + Word.exe). Touchscreen is unnecessary but wouldn't disqualify a model. Also, is the anti-glare function recommended? I'll be operating the laptop more during daylight hours, and I suffer from some moderate light sensitivity, if that matters.
I'd prefer a core i7 processor simply because I have a tendency to turn one tab into 50, while also running youtube or spotify for music, and I don't have a problem spending an extra buck or two for some unnecessary power.
Solid state drive, I don't plan on storing my 4TB animal rape porn library on the machine and I'd like to have a reasonable boot time for portability and practicality.
Preferably 8gb DDR4, I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
7+ hour battery life is a must, especially with my tendency to forget that things need to be charged.
tl;dr need a 15.6" laptop that can handle a drop every other day, Thinkpad or otherwise.
Thanks in advance for the help, /tpg/.

I truly hope you are right and that the Retro Edition will be a great one. Sadly I'm getting very pessimistic about the future prospects of Lenovo and how they are running the ThinkPad line.

I do know that I'm not the one to complain as I'm not driving the market for them. I'm just buying refurbished ones for the nice value/price ratio. Still very sad for the supply to dry up.

Are you buying two of them?

remove the title bar you fucking faggot

For 8 lels of RAM and 480 lels of SSD storage that's pretty good desu senpai.

Just buy this.
m.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-ThinkPad-X220-Laptop-Core-i7-2640M-2-8GHz-16GB-DDR3-256GB-SSD-Win-10-Pro-/252431262038?nav=SEARCH

Kind of a far cry, but has any of you ever seen a TransNote in action?
I'd love to have one of those, but like the w70Xds Thinkpads, they're one of a kind and super rare.

why? i need the buttons on the right and my tabs.

Honestly the keys themselves aren't bad. The keys are curved in, they're pretty much just the top surfaces of the classic keys with the sides cut off.

It's the layout that sucks ass. But it's definitely not chiclet shit, the travel distance is the same and the keys feel nice mechanically

It's basically a whole keyboard of the top two rows of the classic keyboard

>wants 480 gigs SSD
>KEK JUST BUY THIS 256 GIG MODEL xD

>Implying 480GB SSD justifies paying $500 for a 5yo machine.

You should just buy one without a drive or a crappy HDD and find a good deal on an SSD somewhere else.

I have $700 to spend on a Think pad what do?

W520 / W530 tricked the fuck out.

Where could I get a large Thinkpad branded/printed mouse mat/pad. Can't find ANYTHING anywhere. I know I could print one myself for cheap but I'd prefer something high quality premade.

Should I get the x230 or splurge on the x240?

If you need the 22nm refresh that is haswell, get it, but ivy bridge will do as its also a 22nm chip and is cheaper yet really good.

>ThinkpadRetro TimeTraveler! is released in 2017
>has all the specs you could possibly want
>keyboard is perfect
>costs $3000, but worth it for the ideal laptop
>even comes with a 5 year warranty
>somehow, every Thinkpad user's demands have been met
>after a few short days, it is discovered that even after switching from Windows 10, all your data is fed directly to the NSA anyway and there is literally no way to stop this from happening
>after two years, every battery stops working due to DRM, and official batteries start at $400
>after five years, the motherboard dies just as planned and the Thinkpad Retro TimeTraveler! 2(two)! is released, featuring an innovative touchscreen keyboard

I have the oportunity to buy my baby's first ThinkPad for R$600 (around $180) it's a T410 without HD and RAM. I5 1 gen and 1280x800 screen. It is worth it? I need a new notebook and I have some RAM sticks. So I'll only need to buy a new SSD.

Classic Theme Restorer, Tree Style Tab, taskbar moved to the left side of the screen.

Maybe this and use your own image?
www.inkedgaming.com/products/custom-gaming-pad

I have one of the 99c chinese ones but its just a normal sized mousepad.

Just ducktape a regular pen to your tablet pen.

Can't hold and gonna pull the trigger for a fhd x220 from taobao soon

Then Mr Rossmanns merchant ass gets your shekels to repair it.

we can't win.

how about getting an x230t instead?

What? you dont need the minimize, restore, and close buttons on your browser window. And if you only have 1 tab open I dont see why you need to see the title up top.

Never had a laptop, which model is good for programming?

T520 1080p is pretty tall on the screen.

Question, but since it may be a couple years old will it have any inconvineces? Or is it fine?

It's fine for coding, sandy bridge is plenty and tech hasnt marched on much to the point where even a core 2 duo isn't entirely worthless.

>No Back and Forward in arrow keys block, not even the PgUp and PgDown

Fun fact: truly retro thinkpads don't have them either

I can get a L460 for cheap from my job, and I wonder if a 1080 display, usb3 and more recent hardware overall would make it worth it over my x220. I fear the new keyboard, but since I haven't tried it I'm not sure. Any opinions?

>L anything

We've been through this. T, X, or W.

Or in the case of the P50 and P70, P series is okay too.

just bought a T420 and the vendor shipped it with Win10 installed and I cant get any drivers running. I'd just go with linux, but I bought this to use some work applications with so it's got to be at least win7. Is there win 7 driver support? I assumed there was when I bought it. Also I can't get any batteries to charge with the supplied charger. I bought an extra battery besides the one it shipped with and neither gain any charge when its plugged in. They just stay at their percentage until i unplug it and then they drain. The supplied charger was 65watts, is that the correct one or do I need a higher voltage one for the T420?

Arch Linux on my t420 is max comfy. Thinking about installing Gentoo

windows 7 will work, its what shipped on it. Sandy bridge is "legacy" now and doesnt have any w10 drivers, there should be a COA code under the battery, just find a legit iso and install.

65w chargers do work with t420s in general and i dont really know much about batteries to be of help here.

independent media buttons are a shitty meme. How does /tpg/ actually convince themselves they ever needed them?

They also didn't ever release a model (T, X, W) that had a touchpad but not the 6 key arrows block prior to this "retro" abomination.

don't need the touchscreen

What's /tpg/s opinion on the most useful ultrabay module?

Extra HDD?
Battery?
Optical?
Anus massager?

HDD

I'd get the 1TB HDD in the ultrabay, magnetic storage is still really good for guys like me who repeatedly write onto the drive.

Then explain why do the X220 and X230 feature 35W CPUs.

There are 2 types of thinkpad users.
1: just need some cheap shit to watch anime on.
2: actually do work on a reliable, mobile machine.

1b: Uses it as a cheap desktop for shitposting

The X220 and X230 are not the X200. The X200 only shipped with 25W CPUs.

Can confirm, even the 14 inch laptops with 35w core 2 duos can run pretty damn hot.

Could I limit my nvidia gpu of the t420 to a windows vm? Got a guide for this?
