Is The rx480 a good upgrade from my overclocked hd7970?

Is The rx480 a good upgrade from my overclocked hd7970?

Or should I save some money and buy a gtx970 instead.

Is 4gb vram enough these days? Not sure if I'd spend the extra for 8gb...

You should get a after market RX480 with a custom cooler. If you are going to AMD route. If you want to go Nvidia I would wait and see what happens with the GTX1060

The 480 will probably be on par with the 980 with the better aftermarket models.
Improved power delivery+ thermals and capacitors, etc. Made for factory overclock will probably make this card shine

4GB is fine for now.

8GB VRAM is pretty much exclusively for virtual reality. 4GB is plenty for everybody else.

Also, don't go for a 970 if you plan is to not upgrade for a while. Get a 1070 and you'll be fine for a good while.

Yes it's a very good upgrade, but get the 8 gig version and don't buy reference and wait until Amd resolves their pcie overheating problem. Mirrors edge catalyst uses 5 gigs of vram alone, gta5 uses up the entire 4.

I love my 480

3.5

How much of an overclock do you have?

7970ghz edition vs uber mode R9 290X.
The 480 edges out the 290X so that gives you a decent baseline comparison.

But does your mobo? get a smoke detector breh

wait till custn coolers come out on the 14th of July boi. also same day the gtx1060 comes out so look out for the 1060

Do NOT get 4 gigs. Nowadays games are over the top in vram consumption.

I wouldn't say it's worth it unless you have ethereum miners around to sell the 7970 to for a good price like I did with my 280x.

If I were you I'd wait and see if the AIB versions OC to ~1500 MHz like some people claim, which would put it slightly above Fury in performance levels.

I didn't have the patience and wanted a higher end card so just got a 1070 instead

Wait a few weeks. Then we can see the GTX 1060 specs and most likely some good non-reference 480 reveals.

Then take your pic.

Do we have any idea if the 1060 will be specced higher than the RX 480?

Bump

It's not so cut and dry with how different the architectures are. Nvidia are pricing this at $50~$70 more than the 480, so it will likely have more performance out of the box

...

...

You idiots are still trying to push the "on par with 980" huh?

You're going to need to control the damage to your mobo caused by your 480 you fucking retard, stay on funnyjunk

You're going to get fucked over if you ask here user. Doesn't matter what card you say the AMDrones here will say the 480 no matter what. You could say a titan x or 1080 and they would still fucking say 480.

Wait until you hit that 4gb sweetspot

This was posted on reddit and seems about right:

RX 480 = GTX 970 (in DX11 titles)
RX 480 = GTX 980 (in DX12 titles)
RX 480 = R9 390X (in NVIDIA favored titles)

All that for $200 sounds more than fair to me just wait on the new versions with better coolers later this month.

This desu

It won't be 200 dollars for the better versions, only for reference.

but Sup Forums told me it's a meme card!

Right. I hope sapphire remembers the poorfags when they announce the price.

>sapphire
>buying ching chong wing wong name brands

It literally is

X is meme-X is a meme is a meme meme

My old brother told me that AIB will hit 1500 core speed and have 40% performance increase.

What does that mean to you?

If you have a shitty mobo dont buy the 480, it violates the PCI Express standard, as a result of high energy consumption by this interface.

Like the Asus strix?

pls stop memeing on me

idk it sounds bad doe
