Question for Ausbros

Question for Ausbros

I'm probably gonna sound like a condescending dick, but I'm genuinely curious...

Why are you guys so far behind the US in terms of technology in terms of education, infrastructure, and high-tech culture?

And don't give me any of that "can't afford it" noise, i know you got money from trading rocks with china

Isolation, lack of infrastructure, resource-based economy, short-sighted government policy.

>Why are you guys so far behind the US in terms of technology in terms of education, infrastructure, and high-tech culture?
u wot m8?

Innovation

Labor government planned to roll out FTTP to 93% of premises. Liberal party got in and trashed the plans so we're kinda fucked.

I was lucky enough to get FTTP before it was scrapped. Its really shit most people won't ever get it.

Btw vote Labor tomorrow.

you can't teach innovation in school. you're never going to have a better opportunity to innovate than the moment in time you are currently in

Does Labor have any plans to restore the NBN plan they had or will they continue the current NBN plan?

If you vote for either of the two major parties you are cancer.

>earned his millions from investing in an ISP
>doesn't want to improve internet infrastructure

I think their plan is halfway between their old one and the current one. They're going to hook up FTTP to some two out of six or seven million outstanding homes or something like that.

They're being vague by saying their policy is "more fibre". I think it means they will roll on with FTTN in areas under construction but get FTTP in where it is not happening yet. Down the track, FTTN will be replaced to reach the original 93%.

>mfw american education is people killing children with guns
>mfw american infrastructure is people getting killed with guns in cinemas, bars, concerts etc
>mfw american high-tech culture is literally just better guns

Vote libdem and we can have our guns back too.

>i have never met an american in my life

>tfw 100/40 FTTP because of based kevin

Our government sucks

...

obvious kiwi

[murmur murmur] BEST end of the da-a-ay is the WEST end of the daaaay!

hey m8

Everything is so far apart. Seriously, try installing fibre broadband when there is 800miles of arid desert between every village

>Isolation
This is the big one along with population density.

Genetically australians are criminals and other poor trash of europe

Literally every white area outside of Europe is made up of mostly the poor trash of Europe.

My family is from the Middle East, what category do I fall under?

Fuck off, we're full

I'm literally shitting in your country you cunt

It is really fucking expensive here, especially with our awful dollar.

It's really only internet we're behind on. It's all Malcolm Turnbull's fault for wasting time and money trying to replacing a fibre rollout with hybrid copper. We have an election tomorrow. If the opposition get in, they're going to try to get fibre back on track and replace copper installs later down the track.
If the current leadership stays in I'll probably kill myself. Won't be able to stream it though, my internet can't handle that.

>i know you got money from trading rocks with china
All that money goes to fat white women.
Well. One particular fat white woman.

And we almost had good internet. But MalComm got his hands on it and gave it a swirly.

We have long distances vs small population, so infrastructure is more difficult to maintain over here because there is more of it compared to our population. We have the same distances to travel across our country as America, but 250 million taxable people less. That goes for both roads and internet infrastructure.

Our education system is currently fine. I can go do 90% of the courses today and not have to pay for them till I start earning more than 55K AUD a year. The ONLY problem is that we presently don't have a local university that is extra distinguished amongst the international community. No-one ever said "WOW, YOU WENT TO UWS?!?!?!?!" (apart from maybe shitskin immigrants)

I'm not really sure what 'High-Tech Culture' means? Unless you're referring to the 'wow factor' that the Chinese have with their cities and internet. We were a decent tier country for Games Development till the most recent government came into power and scrapped all the incentives. 2K had a studio here, and our indie dev community in Sydney was about to reach critical velocity and begin a new Renaissance. But that crashed.

>Btw vote Labor tomorrow.
this.

I've used FixedWireless. Its not bad, and speeds are more consistent than FTTP. They wont completely scrap the MultiTechnologyMix that was implemented, but I hope to god they cann FTTN and redeploy FTTP.

Australia having slow Internet is a dank meme, urban areas have South Korea-tier speeds

>Voting labor
>Voting for the party that vowed to build a great firewall of Australia
Go live in the UK if you want to live in a police state, plebs

>Btw vote Labor tomorrow.
>this.

top cuck

I'm voting labor and you can't stop me.

Tony faggot did too much damage to small businesses for me to trust liberals any time soon.

>He thinks loads more tax will help business
Why are Labor cucks so delusional?

Yeh its good m9.

>loads more
Realistically, there will be hardly any difference.

You've got lots of space, soon you will become the worlds dumping ground once more.

>"Oh no! Now I can only buy 1'000'000 Yachts instead of 2'000'000 Yachts because of all this outrageous tax!!!! And the plebeians are all now HEALTHY and EDUCATING THEMSELVES?!?!?!?!?!?"

>ANU

Universities don't count, faggot.

Healthcare and education is already easily affordable.
Get a job, you leech

is ANU the only university in Australia with a Stanford/Princeton/MIT-tier CS program?

UQ will claim to, but they are rubbish, they might seem more high end but they are just as trash as the rest of the universities in QLD for most subjects

t. someone who graduated from UQ

>high-tech culture?

>Talking to mate from America
>He talks about getting paid
>Has to take something called a cheque to a bank
>Very confused, cheques are what you use to buy a house
>Repeatedly try to get mate to explain
>Apparently his HR actually creates a piece of paper he has to take to the bank
>Talking to dad
>He says this is how things worked before I was born

can confirm the QLD-trash-tier uni meme is real

meaning like high tech companies, or people founding companies.
i know you got Atlassain, and you used to have crash bandicoot, and hell, i'll even give you fruit ninja, but get real guys, you're slacking

>but they are rubbish
how so?

t. pre-CS student wanting to go to UQ

but bitbucket is so sweet though. it might just make up for, like, mel gibson

There is a statistically verified disparity between job availability and the workforce population we have. It is mathematically impossible to fill jobs that do not exist.

Interesting that you've been handed both and despite the easily affordable education you have access to, it didn't lead to you learning grammar or basic English competency.

Please stop.

It's a three year degree with a shit load of electives and wasted time, for me there was a lot of apathy and anything that wasn't apart of the rigid course guide wasn't worth knowing

If you're not going to UN you might as well go there, or anywhere else probably as my only experiences are between UQ and Griffith ( my sister ) with pretty similar experiences, although friends from sydney university of tech have said that the new trimester program they have there is awful and failure rates are skyrocketing, but that's just conjecture so far.

The thing with UQ is that we/they like to pretend to be superior because we're an old university with sandstone buildings and whatever else but it's all posturing with nothing behind it.

>Muh grammar nazism on Sup Forums
I'm sure you hear this all the time, but you're a massive tosser.

Cunt.

>shit load of electives and wasted time
Bachelor of Advanced Science here, can confirm that any degree with a lot of electives is usually a clusterfuck, shit like people majoring in chemistry but most of their classes are almost completely unrelated subjects like "introduction to geophysics" and "temperate rain-forest ecology"

thanks for the sauce. can you remember what some of your classes were like? did they do any lambda calculus, automata, OS design principles in the first year, or was it all just "types, Console.WriteLine(), this is what a debugger is/does, convert Celsius to Fahrenheit in Python/C#

> (You)
>>Muh grammar nazism on Sup Forums
>I'm sure you hear this all the time, but you're a massive tosser.

Perhaps you ought to use some of that readily accessible healthcare to see a burn treatment specialist. Impeccable retort too, it certainly invalidated my argument.

Can also confirm that UQ is a meme.

Protip: they're all shit, it doesn't matter which university you go to in Australia.

The only people who will tell you otherwise are the UQfags and other Go8fags who shit on other universities to make themselves feel better.

During my time at UQ the superiority complex from the people there just drove me nuts.

>Implying I'm not educated.
>Implying I don't have Health Insurance.
>Implying I don't have a full time job that pays above the average wage.

I'm not poor. I just believe that people who are disadvantaged shouldn't have to suffer in misery, when rich faggots horde their money and kick up a stink when someone even slightly mentions a tax hike.

Its not like its real socialism. Its just forcing the richest people to give what they owe to their fellow Australian. They're well-being and livelyhood is not at all effected by higher taxes. And honestly, its mainly multinational corps who hide their earnings offshore. They're the fucking leeches. Do you want some europoor faggots draining our economy just for their own greed?

Bond is pretty GOAT if you want to study law or business tho

>implying the implication that anyone on Sup Forums studies law or business tho

>don't have a local university that is extra distinguished amongst the international community
Australian National University and University of Melbourne both do pretty damn well in quality rankings.

Btw this is your daily reminder that anyone who claims "muh space" as an excuse for Aust not having good internet is full of shit. Pic related, red/grey areas cover 97% of the population.

Oi, lads. Is it too late to vote? I can't make it to a school cause of work tomorrow

>literally wanting to cuck the country by sending more money overseas
theguardian.com/australia-news/2016/jun/28/coalitions-company-tax-cuts-more-than-40-of-benefit-flows-overseas-report-finds
LNP genocide best day of my life.

Red/grey areas mostly have speeds like and senpai, even before NBN Netflix did a study on our speeds before launching and they found our Internet was much faster than the memes suggested

u havin a giggle m8s?

Less than 20% have speeds above 10mbit. Less than 10% have speeds above 15mbit.

>Netflix did a study in our speeds and found it much faster than the memes suggested
O RLY?
baka.com.au/business/media-and-marketing/netflixs-global-growth-is-slowing--and-australia-is-to-blame-20160418-go9hdb.html
lifehacker.com.au/2015/05/netflix-says-australian-internet-providers-are-all-too-slow/

Averages can be deceiving, they fail to take into account that lots of normies choose slower internet because it's cheaper despite having faster speeds available, also the speeds in regional areas are so atrocious that they bring the whole countries' average down, like my aunt who barely gets 300kbps on a good day

We're not behind you in education. Go and do some research.
We're behind in infrastructure because we have a lot of space and sparsely distributed population. This mean it costs a lot to roll out services to people
We're behind in tech culture because we simply don't have the customer base a country 10 times the size of us.

FEELS BAD MAN.

The speeds in urban areas are often so bad that they're a national embarrassment. There's a reason Gungahlin was chosen as one of the first rollout sites for FTTP, to use just one example. Really not sure why you're trying to peddle such a big lie. Do you work for Telstra or something?

>we're behind in infrastructure because we have a two party system where one half of our politicians are average right wingers and the other half are batshit insane vandals who want to tear the country down and give all our money to murdoch and rinehart
FTFY, low customer base is pretty spot on though

>americunt
>calling anyone else stupid

I knew seppos were retarded but goddamn

Not really, no. It would be a shitload more expensive to wire up that area in red compared to a similar sized area that is rolled up into one contiguous region.

Add to that the costs to pull the data from international servers would be much, much more expensive than most other areas barring Africa and Antarctica.

>costs to pull the data from international servers
Now THAT is a big reason why we have expensive as fuck internet.

>Be a politician in Australia
>Per capita one of the wealthiest countries in the world
>One of the highest developed countries
>One of the fastest growing economies
>Robust economy backed by 50% services, 30% mineral industry and 20% agriculture
>Largest meat exporter
>Largest iron ore exporter
>Literally rolling in cash
>Tell the Australian people we can't afford this and that
>Tell them they will get what the yare given
>Tell them this will a do
>Get paid 200k a year for lying to people

>i believe what i see in the media
>everyone from a country is the same because the people on TV say so

Check this out. You guys are in prime real estate for being a major service economy, the only thing you need to do is stop teaching your bachelors students "programming" and "IT" that is literally decades behind what's being taught in US universities - just scrap the whole concept of a "Bachelor of IT" because it's all totally gay. No one in Silicon Valley would take you seriously if you came to them with that education, even if you were a straight 7 student. Drop all of it, and start teaching what they teach at Stanford, or MIT to year 1 bachelors students.

Here's where Oz is in prime position though: size. Australia is the perfect size in terms of population, and geography to be a proving ground for high-tech innovation in government services. Australia is already really good in terms of having a nice tax and healthcare rebate system with the ATO, and Medicare.

Australia can become a world leader in this field, and basically show everyone else how it's done because you are the right size of population, geographic dispersity, and government to rapidly implement, test, and iterate on technologies in the government services sector. You can move much faster than the US because you're at the right scale. Then, you can send your highly experienced and skilled consultants to the US to implement things on a contractor basis. You can send them to the UK, you can send them to Indonesia, China, France; everywhere.

we invented wifi desu lad

Vote 1 one nation tomorrow.

fucking meme country lad

god help

>I'm not poor.
>Its just forcing the richest people to give what they owe to their fellow Australian
If you don't understand that rich cunts pay nothing while the middle class are gutted by "progressive" taxation, you're poor.

First year first semester comp course is using Haskell

Infer what you want from that

It literally doesn't matter what language they use at that level, the important part is learning the fundamental, transferable skills that can be applied anywhere.

They could literally learn Visual Basic and it would be fine.

>Why are you guys so far behind the US in terms of technology in terms of education, infrastructure, and high-tech culture?

I think the real question is why Americans still think they're world leaders in all of these categories.

Because we have guns, what a stupid fucking question.

Canada is in the same boat really.

It's just sparse population, resource-based economy, shitty governments and not enough investment into infrastructure.

...

I barely get 200kb/s on a good day, so what?

>using infer properly
Just fuckin marry me, sempai

I realised that the only thing I know anything about is IT so I'll be voting entirely based on the fact that Turnbull fucked up the NBN. I don't care if Labor will 'ruin the budget' or whatever. It's going to be terrible either way.

That is your first problem. You say "your country" when you should be saying "our country". Assimilate, don't act like your a special snowflake.

I'm voting labor purely on the nbn, although I'm in a safe labor seat so it honestly doesn't really matter either way to me, I'll still take it in the ass when liberals inevitably get in again.

"You voted for our vision on of the nbn, now suck it up"
