For the last 2 weeks I've been getting solicited by a tech start up in California to be a systems engineer for a retarded amount of money.

I've talked to the CEO, some software engineers, the director of engineering, the CTO, etc etc and they've all been very pleased with me.

I feel like I'm misleading them and don't deserve whatever interest or respect they might have for me.
I guess some context might help. I'm a 19 year old male and have previously been a systems administrator for an industrial pulp mill

I've got some pretty screwed up opinions of myself and bad self-esteem after being bullied for like 10 years

I'm sincerely having a hard time reconciling that smart people might actually be interested in me
I've got a job right now as a systems administrator for a smallish retail chain with 38 locations and I've been rolling some out pretty big infrastructure changes for them.

I get paid about half what this other job is offering but I'm concerned that given that it's a remote position in another country the lack of communication might make me seem as if I do nothing and then I've lost both the new job and my old one.

I'm feeling pretty bummed out about the whole situation.

Where's the subscribe button?

ask ur mom
nobody on g even has a job lmao

You'd have to be a fucking Luddite to get fired from any job. Just take the job, carry on and shut the fuck up.

Stop promoting this bs to make you feel better about your crappy life.

so, you're 19 and already getting good wages.
meanwhile, people that have degrees don't get shit.
what's the problem? just do it.

because at 19 you probably think $30k is a stupid amount of money

Just put in your two weeks at your current position and try out the new job. Most people, even sysadmins and CTOs, are dumb as shit. You'll do great at the new job as you already have experience doing this shit. If all goes shitty beg your old work place to let you back, as long as you left on good terms then they will probably find a use for you.

Stop being a pussy. I am jelly I wish I had your skills man.

It'll probably be fine. Most of the others don't really know what the fuck they're doing either and use google to save their necks.

42k is what I make right now for this retail chain.

The start up is offering 75k to me with benefits.

My total cost of living is like 600 a month.

go for it, but the reason they're so keen on a 19 year old with so little experience (and I don't mean this to come out negatively, you literally have almost no experience) is that you'll be far less inclined to kick up a fuss and continue working when they start skipping pay checks when the company fails than say a 10 year veteran who has worked with startups before, you'll also likely be working long hard hours which again isn't necessarily something older experienced people will put up with

if you do go for the job just make sure you're saving more than you usually would and be prepared to hop ship as soon as the pay cheques stop coming in because you'll need it while looking for another job

well consider yourself lucky then. stop complaining because lots of people would kill to get a remote job like that.

>projecting this hard
silly wageslave

That's something else I was concerned about.

I've spoken to the CTO and founders about it quite a bit and they've given me some confidential information regarding deals they have to increase monetization. They've got quite a bit of VC funding so they're safe for at least a year, they've been going for 5 steadily.

This job was pushed to me because I know one of the software engineers that is really driving the company. He told me about the job and highly encouraged me to look into it and he put in a great word for me.

Within 48 hours of that I was speaking to all of the important people of the company.

You're probably right about the zero experience. I've only been working for 2 years and they've been for academia and industrial environments.

Take the job or I will find you and bully you. You are very competent. People who run businesses (even startups) don't just throw around money for no reason. The can tell you are competent. Don't worry.

you may want to ask /adv/ about stuff like this

and/or /biz/

I wish I had your luck, OP.

Not in California.

You are young, and it sounds like you're learning fast. Your skills right now might not be worth what they're offering, but they can see that you'll be worth all that and more after a year or so of working as an engineer.

They're basically investing in your future. I say go for it. I had similar options when I was about your age, but I went for an internship instead, since it seemed "more my speed". I didn't recognize that the other offers knew exactly how much I knew, but also saw how much I would know in a year.

I live in a rented room of a house in Canada.

That's why I specified it was a remote position.
