What's your opinion on Chromebooks?

What's your opinion on Chromebooks?

Why aren't they made out of chrome?

/thread

I think they should have run a variation of Android from the start but it works for them so I guess I can't judge.

Ideal place for powerbutton should be just above the backspace key.

Sexy as fuck. Possibly the best looking laptop, but I haven't seen one in person.

they are cute

near useless meme machines

and some of the support 100% coreboot

botnet XD

Does google require power button to be in that retarded place?

Ten rupees have been deposited in you account Pajeet

Shitty laptops with a shitty butchered up Linux distro.
In Europe they are not cheaper than other low end laptops (that at least they don't come with that abomination of an OS)

MacBook pro

amazing side machines to run linux on. crouton = a stable, UX-focused OS in ChromeOS and a shitty UX-wise, but more functional linux. switch between the two instantly depending on what you're doing.

>not installing a gahnoo/linux distro as soon as you get it

>a shitty butchered up Linux distro
UX is great for basic tasks. quite frankly no other linux distro is as good out of the box. lack of functionality is immediately solved with crouton

GOAT secondary PC, all you need to do is get a thumb drive and install gentoo and you're good
If you're paying more than 400 for one than you're an idiot

Also
>muh mini hard disk because you get le ebin cloud service

Better update system than Android.

I wish Google allowed for a Home/PageUp/PageDn/End column. I use those keys all the time.

Which chromebook is THAT model?

The Pajeet 9000 (Brown Edition)

What happened to bringing Adobe CC to the ChromeOS? There were some talks. Anybody know what happened in the end?

Cute toys that are 100% useless.

Chromebook Pixel (aka "the macbook-esque beautiful, yet unjustifiably expensive model")

cringe worthy

Alt +up, Page Up
Alt +down, Page Down
Ctrl + Alt +up, Home
Ctrl + Alt + down, End
Ctrl + Alt + ? to see all keyboard shortcuts

hmmm

You have to press and hold in order to power it off though so its harmless to accidentally hit it with your sausage fingers

I hate mine, there's always such a fucking hassle to do anything normie related

>want to watch movie
no torrent client, ssd is too small to hold a movie

>want to talk with friends
no skype, web skype doesnt work on Chrome

Can't get the trackpad to work properly under Linux

The Pixel
>Great hardware.
>GOAT screen.
>Clean, beautiful design.
>Affordable.
However, it has soldered on storage, which means if you install another OS you only have 32GB-64GB of local space.

My Chromebook has a 320gb hard drive and I'm running ElementaryOS on it. Best machine I ever bought.

>HDD
>2016

apt-get install chromium
It can get interesting with Android apps on it.

useless shit

laptops for jews

No one cares about your $200 piece of shit.

A hard drive is really more than sufficient if all you're going to be doing is web based shit on it.
No one is going to be doing anything intensive on a converted chromebook.

>a hard drive is more than sufficient
Fuck no.

>OH EM GEE
>I CAN'T LIVE MY LIFE IF IT TAKES SIX EXTRA MILLISECONDS TO LOAD MY BROWSER WINDOW.
On - LITERALLY - anything else I would agree, but hard drives do not matter in the use case of a very cheap PC.
If you're after more battery life, a bigger battery is cheaper than an SSD.

Speed is one of the least important factors for why hard drives are terrible for mobile devices.

Read my entire fucking post.

Everything on your mobile device should be regularly backed up.
Hence stability and reliability are not a concern.

In a cheap device, it is much easier and cheaper to increase the battery life with larger batteries/extra cells than with an SSD.

There is no reason that an HDD would not be more than sufficient for a converted Chromebook.

Trash in laptop form.

Anyone who buys them is either technically illiterate, poor, or both.

During an internship in High School, my mentor and I installed Ubuntu on one of those (the first models to go on sale a few years ago), it was so fast and smooth we couldn't believe it.

>Ctrl + Alt + ? to see all keyboard shortcuts
of which, there are too goddamn many

If you're that poor and insist on not having a Windows device you could just buy an old macbook in the same price range

JSTorrent and Google Hangouts.
Problems solved.

they suck. I had one sold it and got a real computer a month later

You can get a 13" MBPr that has a 128GB SSD and Iris graphics for the price of a Pixel LS, so I don't see why anyone would buy it.

Maybe the base model for $999 but that's pretty much useless due to 32GB of storage.

$2K laptop with a literal facebook machine OS

i think the only people that bought it were rich tech people.

All laptops are literal facebook machines.

I never understand why people here are still reasoning that HDD is a good option ever. They can be cheaper when you need lots of storage (not the case here, btw), but that's it.

SSD:
>Faster, both throughput as latency, which is a huge deal. I remember when I used my first SSD to replace an HDD in a laptop, I was fucking amazed what a huge difference it made.
>Lower power
>No moving parts
>Mechanically robust
>No noise
>As of 2016, longer lifetime than HDDs
>Unharmed by magnetic fields (doesn't matter most of the time though)
>Way smaller and lighter

For a laptop, there really is no question.

Except for, you know, the price.

>being poor

I can buy a 320GB HDD for literally $10.
I have fucking 20 from disassembling laptops over the years.

If you were to covert a cheapo Chromebook to a cheap laptop, you are obviously being thrifty, you are not going to care about anything you mentioned.

HDDs are cheap, functional storage.

>being poor
Also the cheapest 320GB 2.5 inch drive is $35 on Amazon. No one fucking cares if your a sperglord who got a bunch of them from collecting used chinkpads.

Ideal place for the powerbutton is on the outside edge of the case for two reasons:
1. Hard to hit accidentally (have to press and hold to activate)
2. Able to turn laptop on without opening the lid (great for when using external peripherals)

>Also the cheapest 320GB 2.5 inch drive is $35 on Amazon. No one fucking cares if your a sperglord who got a bunch of them from collecting used chinkpads.
USE CASE YOU FUCKING NIGGER

Someone converting a $200 chromebook to a cheap laptop will very likely be someone with a bunch of reclaimed hardware.

I'd rather pay for my education over faster storage

Enjoy your shit battery life and loud rattling noises because you were too cheap to fucking spend $40 on an SSD then.

>Enjoy your shit battery life and loud rattling noises because you were too cheap to fucking spend $40 on an SSD then.
You really are autistic.
If you are working with a $200 or less reclaimed machine, your only concern will be if it works.

When daddy stops buying your computers for you, you will understand.

Back to McDonalds buddy.

>Implying
I was once a poor student - I have the life experience to not be an autistic sperglord.

If you're looking for touchpad compatibility in a Linux distro, take a look at GalliumOS.

And yet you're scraping hard drives from laptops thrown in the dumpster because you want to save a few bucks.

>And yet you're scraping hard drives from laptops thrown in the dumpster because you want to save a few bucks.
I used to do random tech work back when I was a student - also participated in a few pick-n-pull's to build up frankenbuilds for people in need (mainly people on the pension).
We did get funding from time to time, including free Windows licenses, but it was never enough to do what we needed to - it mainly just paid for parts that we couldn't scrape from donated machines.
A few people who I used to do work for still donate me computers and I tear them down into useful components (HDDs, RAM, occasionally processors and MBs if they're slightly newer) and I hand it in every time the "drive" starts.

Forgive me for not being a sperglord who can only focus on faster boot times.

>SSDs are only good for faster boot times

You sound like you have the wrong priorities in life m8. You are literally wasting your time and nerves for unsubstantial autistic shit. I know many people like you, thinking they are super smart and sophisticated for making unintuitive, peculiar decisions to save a few bucks. In the end they look back and see how much time they have wasted for something that literally doesn't matter at all.

>"I have no argument", the post.

Just stop being so fucking stubborn really, it gets you nowhere in life. I know you neurotically try to make all the best decisions, but you are completely wrong on this one. You are clinging to old shit that most of us have long left behind for good. Read all the arguments that have already been posted, you are making stupid decisions. Your mom will probably tell you the same thing, talk to her.

Great student laptops, long battery life, great quality, brilliant build quality, and with a large sd card everything you need in a portable day to day machine. I've had a Toshiba Chromebook 2 (1080p model) for a few years now and it's excellent

See

Great for students.

Forbidden in my country...

Probably the worst notebook you can buy.
Good if you are a retarded poorfag

>just upload to the cloud bro!
>I have nothing to hide bro!

SHIT
H
I
T

I think they should hurry with their android apps compatibility thing.

They are an infinitely better choice than any sub $400 Winblows laptop, but if you actually need a powerful machine then they're not what you're looking for.

Also, the Chromebook Pixel is the most beautiful piece of hardware I've ever seen. It's a shame that it's just an internet machine.

I could not live without super key.

The only way to get an cheap non thinkpad laptop with some of them able to install a Linux distribution.

You can wipe the OS and install linux.

>Intel Core iX processor
>decent amount of RAM (16GB)
>64 GB flash storage
>64 GIGABYTES OF FLASH STORAGE
>ONLY 64 GIGABTYES
>LET ME REPEAT: ONLY 64 GB!

How about no?

inb4
>just upload to the cloud bro
>just get spotify bro
>I have nothing to hide bro

Fukin SAVAGE

>what is an SD card
>what is an external hard drive
>what is owncloud

Nice hardware, shitty software

You can install whatever software you want.

I own the 4gb i3 version of this. I even upgraded it's interval storage to 128 gb. I fucking hate it. If I type for more than thirty minutes or use the mouse, my hand cramps like a mother fucker. Same thing happens to anyone else trying to use it

This applies to Android devices too.

A used thinkpad is a million times better than a chromebook. Chromebooks have the shit tier keyboards and screens.

BWAAA MY PORN COLLECTION DOESN'T FIT, I USUALLY WATCH PORN IN PUBLIC PLACE AND WHILE WORKING BUT NOW I CANT

dont fall for the shitpad meme

thinkpads are just average plastic laptops with the worst screen ever

good for cheap lightweight web-browsing machines
the pixel is nice, but I wish they upgraded the storage

>Just upload your porn to the cloud bro!

I did that once with me and my gf on dropbox and we went through hell.

So shut the fuck up you filthy crybabynigger.

>what is rekt

What is the best bang/buck Chromebook for upgrading to Linux and adding storage?

I dont know about bang/bux but Acer Chromebook 14 is the best chromebook that can be converted to gentoo machine.

I like them

Just ordered pic related

Aluminum chassis
4GB DDR3
32GB SSD
1080p IPS screen

$260

Only downfall is the somewhat weak-end quad core. At least it's fanless, thus silent.

just set it to left alt

Is it the model with Celeron N3150? Thats actually a great processor for a 6W one.

Yes it is. Octane scores on these never seem to pass 10k, but I don't really plan to do work other than spreadsheets for pathfinder on it.
