I am considering purchasing pic related after getting a refund for a faulty 850 EVO. Good choice or should I risk another 850?

new Kek(Kek.TOP);

do we have the same SSD

Upgrading an old Macbook Pro so I can keep using it without being jewed by Apple.

>inb4 homeOSeX
Nah, I just like using UNIX without having to worry about it breaking after an update.

forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2461768

doesn't look like it.

Ah yeah I remember the difference now, it came in a freebie upgrade from the 128gb XPS13 so I wasn't going to complain.

Is the OCZ TR150 any good?

SP550 is quite popular apparently.

How good is it?

Considering m.2 + hard drive for my mini gay men PC like logical increments recommend how is that

Samsung Rapid Mode 850 EVO.

Intel 530s in raid0 and a Samsung 850 in a USB enclosure on current rig
950 Pro and some shit SATA m.2 that I just store a few games on in my laptop

950 Pro is badass but my BIOS/EFI time is now about 15 seconds. Not a huge deal for me because I never turn my computer off but it actually boots slower than with a SATA ssd

> more than 500 mb SSD
For what propuse
>inb4 poorfag XD

For storing more than a single song.
Pic related, this single song would nearly fill a 500 MB drive

is it safe to put everything in a single 500gb ssd?

I barely have 200gb of used space in my current rig.

Posting Maki for jerking off to.

...

>is it safe to put everything in a single 500gb ssd?
No, you should always have backups. If you're asking if ssds are reliable though, I've not ever had one fail in the several years I've used them. Can't say the same for mechanical drives.

Alright so anyone wanna discuss SSDs instead of posting reddit benchmarks? What are some good 500GB- 1TB drives that aren't gonna be used as an OS drive?

Pretty good for $38.

850 pro
950 pro
Mx200

Sm961 is the king tho. 1tb for 512$

To install an OS newer than Win98 on?

What are the advantages of having a SSD that is that fucking quick? Doing things in Windows must be so fucking fast.

Insanely fast boot, loading programs almost before you're finished clicking them, copying large files fast.

Is it worth it?

SanDisk plus 240gb
don't really know much about it, i bought it because it has lots of good reviews, works pretty good so far.

running ubuntu with noatime and discard fstab mount options.

on a laptop you will get better battery life due to the ssd not having to spin, that alone is worth switching even if you don't care about the performance io boost which is awesome too.

Just the thread I needed. I want a 50$ SSD and I have been looking for MONTHS for a good one at that price. All I can find with the highest rating are some TLC (PNY, OCZ, ZOTAC).

The thing is, if a buy a TLC, let's say, only for my OS, it's not gonna last more than 2 years, correct?

Thanks.

Friend, just buy any 50$ SSD, like you said, it won't last for 2 years but in those 2 years you can likely save up another 100$ for a top shit ssd

wtf, it will last more than two years, get you fact straight

I like you user, okay.
But, how do I know when my SSD is dying? What are the first symptoms?

1 of 3 ssds. This is a 120gb 840 (non EVO/Pro). Bought it when SSDs were still like $1.35 per GB.

What program?

Low write speed, for one(different guy btw).

Samsung Wizard. Suite dedicated to Samsung SSDs. It can run tests on other drives etc.

If you are upgrading an old Macbook pro, get it from OWC. You could use a 6G or 3G Electra, but if it's older, the 3G will actually work better by not having to use the older bus emulation.

I followed my own advice, by the way, and it made my 2009 MBP run like a new machine. Startup time was ridiculous (something like 16 seconds.)

My 500GB Samsung 850 EVO for reference. Also have a 250GB 850 EVO.

What's the big deal about OWC? From what I've seen, the only thing going for them seems to be that they're one of the older Apple-exclusive brands.

Is there anything performance-wise that sets them apart from other SSD brands?

Nothing really.

They have good transfer rates--not the best, but good.

What I liked was they seemed to be less hassle. Firmware updates are done with the expectation that you will run them on a mac, so you will not be given an .exe and be told that you should have run windows. I knew it was set to just be plugged in to the MBP.

They make a big deal about the performance staying the same over time. I had mine for about three years and the performance is pretty much the same as it was at the start, so they may be right. (Though the declining performance over time for SSDs seems to be less an issue than it used to be)

someone with a kingdian s280 post crystaldiskmark plz

Oh I was actually gonna order a new SSD tonight, i'm really glad this thread came up.
I was gonna buy pic related, i know allot of people take issue with Sandisk, but i have a old 16 gig Sandisk SD card, and my brothers been running on a Sandisk SSD for 4 years now with no problems.
This model in particular looks like quite the steal, $125 for half a TB of SSD.
>Link: pcpartpicker.com/product/J4s8TW/sandisk-internal-hard-drive-sd8sb8u512g1122

I was wondering what Sup Forums's opinion on this model would be, so much storage for so cheap, you just cant pass this shit up.

self bump cause i'm gonna buy this thing in 10 mins weather i get feedback or not.

I have a desktop

Kingdian 240gb is best bet. 550/450 read/write $50 dollarydoos
When you have another 50 dollars you can get 1100/900 read/write with raiding 0 :DDDD

Did you place the order yet?

This is what I got off my Crucial BX100. Bought it a while back in a sale.
Have to say, I am relatively pleased with the performance

Sandisk is good brand mane, 500GB for that price isn't bad at all.

No, got sidetracked in a hunger games thread on Sup Forums

Sandisk SSDplus.

Cheap as fuark and plenty fast for me.

So I built my first rig last night. But the problem is I got a samsung 850 evo SSD and apparently it's incompatible with my MOBO's M.2 slot. The slot is apparantly only for PCIe NVME SSD's . Is there any work around to this or am I fucked and need to get a new SSD?

I know i'm a retard for not researching my part compatibility extensively beforehand

so how about now you try researching your part extensively afterhand to figure out the answer to your question?

just get an M.2 - SATA Adapter and plug it to mobo via sata cable.

Holy fuck you need to do more research before buying things.
The 850 is a standard SATA ssd, and has sata connectors. It won't fit in a m.2 slot. You need to buy a m.2 compatible ssd, like the 950 Pro, also from samsung.

I think he has this, not the 2,5" one. And yes, it's SATA based

Just bent the contacts around with a needlenose pliers.

you'll be fine.

Bought one of these to play around with, 120gb.

I bought it to test something on windows 10 that I couldn't do through a virtual machine. Apart form that I don't know what I'll do with it.

Can you install programs on drives other than your boot drive?

>Can you install programs on drives other than your boot drive?
Yes and crystaldiskmark has a portable version. Please run a benchmark I'm curious for this chink ssd.

Are the cheapo Sandisk Plus SSDs any good?

Yes, so are the Kingston ones.

Lol nice meme user but I'm not that dumb, I know the Kingston ones with asynchronous NAND are trash tier.

Best brand for mSATA SSD ? Just want a decent cheap 60GB model for my Memepad.

For a main OS Desktop SSD? maybe not but they will work.

For a laptop SSD? it will be more than enough.

Meh. What do you expect for $40?

Isn't SanDisk shit-tier in terms of manufacturing quality?

Firmware updates aren't an issue for me since I run Bootcamp. I'm still leaning heavily towards the MX200, but I'll take a good look.

What's that other tool that gets posted around here? It shows the expected life of an SSD in big bold text.

Not really, they just werk.

Meh.

So I should expect the same amount of longevity from SanDisk when compared with a brand like Samsung or op's Crucial SSD?

Post a pretty screenshot you lazy piece of shit. This is an imageboard.

Gross t.bh f.am

Samsung 850 evo and M2 ssds? no, not even close but they will still last a long time.

Wont be the same speeds either since SSD Plus has a really slow write for a SSD apparently but decent reliability and read speed.

SP550 and SSD Plus are pretty much low end SSDs that just werk.

...

Kek

XD

The cheapest ones you can find. There's some 1TB TLC drives that are around $200. Since they wouldn't be the main drive, they'd be just fine. I'd still keep a large spinner to keep backups on though.

Not really. The slightly increased speed doesn't make up for the cost premium unless you're planning to use them for time critical business applications. In general use and gaming, you won't really notice the difference. Speaking as an Intel 750 PCIe owner.

What's wrong with tlc? I think the kingston uv 400 in my laptop is tlc, how badly did I fuck up?

it's just much slower. Depends what you use it for.

There's nothing "wrong" with them. It's just that they're newer so they aren't time tested and the controllers for them still haven't had all the bugs worked out. Plus the 3 bit cells are inherently less reliable and shorter lived than the older 2 bit MLC which is less reliable than single bit SLC. But TLC is fine for consumer PCs and is much cheaper to produce.

Haha that cat's tail looks like a huge penis!

xD lol

DUDE LMAO

Fucking cancer

Is there something wrong with my samsung 830?

Don't listen to that other person. EVERYTHING is abundantly faster with an ssd. It's worth it.

I'm joining the SSD meme. I will reinstall my main OS there. What are some good reliable ones?

Kek

Doing the same thing, OP. Trying to find a good 1TB SSD to replace the internal 750HDD.

Newer versions of OSX are fucking bullshit without an SSD. Sleep takes double what it used to.

So far I'm leaning towards the Sandisk Ultra II 960gb.

What's the sweet spot for size/write speed in comparison to purchase price? I'm leaning towards a $150 budget area, seems the market is decently fast for the price, with decent size, without having to pay extreme premiums for multiple terabytes. Thoughts?

Got mine 45% off on amazon uk a couple weeks ago. I haven't started installing windows on it yet but the speeds here are still a huge improvement on my current HDD.

Pretty good.

I saw it for 199USD around Christmas and I've been waiting for it to hit that price again ever since.

Also my country has a fairly horrible luxury goods import tax I'm trying to avoid.

Kingdian S180 60GB. Paid 20$. I have a VM with Lunix Mint on it. Quite okay for this, compared to my system Intel SSD shit. But I don't really need it. Maybe I'll give it my sister for her old laptop.

SSD General.
What has this become??

Just installed a ocz 150 240g
I really need a better case
I feel like stabbing someone at zalman for having such a stupid spot for the ssd

>Kingdian

Where to cop? Gaybest? Aliexpress?

Just tape it wherever you want, problem solved.

Gaybest. Was in flash sale for 21$ or someting and is now at 30$.

But you get the S280 (wich is recommended) 120GB for 36$.
gearbest.com/hdd-ssd/pp_313950.html?wid=1
The bigger and newer versions have better speeds. Pic related is the S280 120GB 36$.
