Hey I'm kind of oblivios when it comes to cpus, I have an AMD FX 4300 Quad Core, is there any cheap upgrades? I'm talking 300-400 dollars

FX 8370

What are you looking to upgrade ~desu

nigga your cpu is fine. Why the fuck would you even want to upgrade.

If you insist get a fat 3rg gen i5, it's the only thing that MAYBE is a better value.

But I insist, you're being silly. That CPU is still badass. Save you money for now.

A used 8350. Definitely OC that 4300 to at least 4GHz

This. It's literally a free upgrade.

When does Zen come

Late 2016 - early 2017 from what I heard.

Save up a bit more money and get a 5820K

Kek

I like how no one considered that fact that if OP has a 4300, he definitely doesn't have the right AM3+ mobo that can handle a 8350.

If you need a new cpu, 6600k (or non K)+H170 or Z170 chipset mobo.

Bamn, right in the middle of 300 and 400$. Congrats.

>early 2017

You've gotta be shitting me, I thought it would be here by fall.

Goddammit AMD

this

but amd shills will be shills

Get a 6500 or 6600
Not sure about Skylake, but overclocking with Haswell/Devil's Canyon largely wasn't worth the gouts of molten, hot air your computer would expel. Not to mention, it's complicated as fuck nowadays--ask three people how to overclock Intel, and you'll receive three different answers.
Most computer equipment is so efficient nowadays, it's a shame that typical mentality of overclocking is to undermine it.

So again, get a 6600 or 6500, but then get a Z170 so you can at least overclock the ram, which is usually as easy as setting a profile.

I can't remember what I spent, but it was $300-something for a cpu and mobo combo at Micro Center.

>I like how no one considered that fact that if OP has a 4300, he definitely doesn't have the right AM3+ mobo that can handle a 8350.
Why would he need anything different if he already has the AM3+ socket?

zen is a meme just let it go arleady

I would wait until Zen if you're comfortable, otherwise AMD FX-8350 or if you need lower watts, FX-8300

I mean if you want to keep it AMD go with an FX-8350. However for 400$ I would never do that.

pcpartpicker.com/list/vYv8cf

Here is what I would go with, even included a cooler. If you do not wish to overclock get an H170 motherboard and a non-K skylake CPU.

Why is everyone shilling for amd? I'm a fan of their gpus but their processors just suck

You can pick up a used 4790 for like 200 and a new h97 for less than a 100

>it's a AMD vs Intel shitposter

I use AMD but agreed that if OP is looking to upgrade his CPU within the range of $300-$400 he should just get a new mobo and go Intel.

That said, AMD processors are still bretty gud especially considering how the FX series has aged. They're considerably cheaper for comparable performance. If you're starting a build and you only have the budget for an i3, you're better off going AMD.

The Skylake i3 is some funky shit that is somehow dependent on odd shit like RAM speed for better performance. It is also 2 cores, 4 logical. We're getting to the point with gaming that octacore processors are getting utilized more efficiently and single core speed is a little less important than it once was.

>basing cpu worth on gaymes only
stay Sup Forumsirgin

how can you say it's a meme when it's not even out yet

I've got a Phenom II X4. I know I need to upgrade my mobo to get anything decent, but that seems like an assload of work.

I have mine at 4.7ghz currently.

>I know I need to upgrade my mobo to get anything decent,

For what purpose? If you have a decent AM3+ board you just swap the CPUs.

>AM3+

Congratulations you've found my problem.

OP didn't even state his mobo. I doubt most mobo's will be able to pull that much even if you had a decent cooler which again will cost too much for the value you get.

OP, Just get a 212 evo and bring that bitch to @ 4.1-4.2 GHz and you should be fine for a while.

I have a hyper 212 and an msi 970 gayming mobo. Doesnt even hit 40℃

What doesn't hit 40c? It's usually the socket and package temps that heat above the threshold before the CPU.

Also he didn't even state he has a 970 board. And certainly not all 970 board are fitted for even semi decent OC.

I like to think i have damngood air flow for my shit ass case. When under load ive reached inside and felt the CPU it self and it was only somewhat warm it seemed.

What about an Phenom II x4 B60?

>I buy AMD processors

>overclocking skylake chips
>complicated
You just set a voltage (below 1.4v) and multiplier in your BIOS and stress test it. I'm not sure how much real-world performance improvement you'd see but I imagine going from 3.5GHz to 4.5 is noticeable.

My FX 8300 works well with an OC, costed me as much as a Xeon 1231v3 for both the CPU and motherboard

SERIOUS DUMB QUESTION

Is there any point in buying better CPU's than mid-range for gaming? Or a three to five year old high-end CPU?

For serious adobe / autocad work i get it, but for gaming?

no
unless you do emulators

fx-6300 or fx-8300 series.

And has slower single thread performance while consuming more power.

Ya but I only care about multi-threaded performance for streaming, it still hits 60fps in any game I throw at it, and I don't really do things like emulation or play CPU heavy games that need single core performance

Plus good luck finding a decently priced Z97 board with M.2 and USB 3.1

Back when I bought my Z97 Pro 4 there was no USB 3.1 and it cost me 70€. Can't complain. Also I would record and stream games with VCE. I have the bandwidth to bump the bitrate up enough to compensate for the worse quality. And it doesn't impact performance.

AM3+ mobos have been available since 2010. Your own fault for not leaving a place for an upgrade.

Do NOT stick an FX 8 core CPU in your motherboard without checking to make sure the VRMs can handle it.

Honestly, I'd get this:

PCPartPicker part list: pcpartpicker.com/list/zB68RB
Price breakdown by merchant: pcpartpicker.com/list/zB68RB/by_merchant/

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($197.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-B150M-DS3H Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($65.38 @ Newegg)
Memory: GeIL EVO POTENZA 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory ($54.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $318.36

or this:

PCPartPicker part list: pcpartpicker.com/list/f8B4P6
Price breakdown by merchant: pcpartpicker.com/list/f8B4P6/by_merchant/

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1231 V3 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($239.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Motherboard: ASRock H97 Anniversary ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($69.88 @ OutletPC)
Total: $309.87

depending on your use case. The haswell Xeon is a bit cheaper since you can re-use your DDR3 memory, and performs better in multi-threaded workloads, but the Skylake i5 performs better for gaming while still doing well in multi-threaded workloads.

>POTENZA
Just when I thought "gamer" marketing could not get even more idiotic.

You've seen nothing

Saved in my "hardcore" folder

>300-400
>cheap upgrdes

Get a used i5 2500k from ebay for $110. Then get a new LGA1155 mobo for about $100. You'll be set.

I still have a Phenom II X4, only planning to upgrade when ZEN shows what it is up to.

Why do gaymen mobos needs hardware to decode Dolby Digital(TM) and dts?

>1GB dedicated network buffer

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST

any skylake i5
