I recently bought a Thinkpad T61 because of the Richard Stallman memes, installed Middleton and an SSD, and the whole thing is heavy, and feels clunky and slow. I could probably get around $150 for it with the modifications.
I'm looking for something that runs ubuntu well, is fast, and under 13", budget is under $400. I don't game at all but I'm looking for an i5 or better processor, at least 4GB of RAM. I'm okay with buying an older machine but not something so old it doesn't work properly with the latest LTS.
What do you suggest?
Evan Jones
Thinkpad X220. I'd have suggested an EeePC 1201N (Atom 330/ION) but that's only if you are on a fucktight budget.
Luke Moore
Is the x230 any good?
John Walker
I don't know man. I went from a X220 to a X250 and the "awful keyboard problem" people were talking about isn't THAT much of a problem. I miss the back/next page keys and my usual layout but the new key shape is way better in my opinion. Though I think there's a difference between the 30 series keyboard and the 40/50 series one, something something about chassis.

I wouldn't get a new low end laptop out of principle, the are all disposable crap that's designed to fall apart in a year of use. Maybe a slightly more modern used business class laptop like the Dell 6220, HP LP 2560p, Lenovo X220 etc. all are ~12" and sub 2KG and have terrible screens even by the cheapest chink tablet standards.

Dell XPS 13.
Or buy 10 too heavy clunky cheaper think pads

Acer chromebook 14

Macbook early 2016, with the M7 processor. Rose gold preferred.

I'm the owner of x230 and I'm telling you not to get that crap. The resolution is ridiculous 1366x768. Trackpad is unusable (worst trackpad I've ever tried). Get yourself something else than that crap.
Tyler Fisher
>using trackpad on a thinkpad >complaining for 768p when OP clearly says he's on a budget what should he get then, a brand new XPS? Fucking moron, get back to Sup Forums if you use your thinkpad's trackpad and not the trackpoint
Anthony Garcia
You posted a thin laptop, you either want the X1 series or any T ending in s for example the T420s. the *20 series is still the best bang for buck, has support for msata ssds, will cover every use case besides gaming
Eli Ortiz
what people have against the xps?
Henry Hughes
Not OP but let me hijack the thread.
I wanted a new laptop that was between 12 to 14 inches, had a decent processor (no need for dedicated gpu) and the two most important features, a great keyboard for typing and long battery life.
Basically something for me to code crap while I'm on the train (I travel a bit on the weekends).

Thinkpad 13 is pretty cash
Wyatt Perez
get an x240 and put a 1080p ips screen in it and a x250 touchpad
Ian Moore
buy a broken macbook, send it to louis rossmann for repair and install Windows 10 on it
Chase Moore
this except open it up and shit inside it then put it back together before you send it to himh
Caleb Flores
Don't think it has an i5, though
Gabriel Reed
Nothing. It's just expensive and OPs on a budget.

My friend, allow me to suggest the new Macbook. Blazing fast, light as a feather, and with enough battery life to get you through the day. Nothing compares to a Macbook, designed by Apple in California, by only the best engineers, now starting at $1299. Apple, don't be evil!
