Windows XP: what are the odds that my pirated iSO is full of rootkits?
I need to install XP on a computer to run some legacy software to control some antique hardware. It's complicated and not really interesting.
I'm looking for a good iso, but not sure where to look. I stopped being a horrible little skiddie back in 2004 and went and got a real job. But if I were still up to my old tricks, instead of putting Net-Devil and Poison Ivy in a "diablo gold generator" I'd put a quality rootkit in a nice pirated copy of an OS and seed it on TPB, with a bunch of good reviews bought and a VIP status. And then I'd steal people's details left and right.
Now, I'm not going to be using this ancient system for much online, but I still don't want some douchebag in russia to be able to see what I'm doing.
Should I go with an older iso and figure that by then, the command and control methods for anything in it are invalidated? (I had to jump ircds for drone control every few months, and there were always a bunch of drones who missed the update. i cry everytiem)
Or should I go with a newer one that could have updated malware in it?
Well, you got me interested. What legacy software and antique hardware?

Maybe

I don't know

Can you repeat the question?

the one where I said no was legit, I'm OP
god the fucking autisms here
Logan Morales
Holy fuck op you're pathetic. Buy I'll take pity on you. Install xp on a virtual machine first with no net access, check the running processes for anything that shouldn't be there. Then check the start up configuration by typing msconfig into the cmd prompt. If all looks well port scan it with zenmap this may take awhile to do all ports so do a smart scan first to check if there's anything basic so you know the os is compromised quickly. All done? great! Now go install it on to a pc and configure your firewall on your router to not allow upnp and manually set up only the needed ports. That's it.
Evan Bailey
Fug I might as well just set up a machine in between it and the network running ethereal and just monitor all the traffic perpetually
Anyone else miss this style of website design and software download listings?
Thomas Howard
No problem mate. I like how simple it is and straight to the point. I wish more sites can be like that.
Luis Richardson
>Hey guys what's the odds my rootkit ISO has a rootkit on it? ...
Jose Gomez
>Your are gonna get hacked automatically just by using an old operating system
Can we stop this retarded meme? Why is Sup Forums so full of teenagers that repeat the same non-sense they hear everywhere?
Unless you are a corporation or download and execute the first .exe you find in a russian porn website, no one is gonna fucking hack your computer where you control the contability of your paint shop, no one gives a flying fucking fuck about you and you could be using Windows 95 even, nothing is gonna happen.
For fucks sake.

Yeah its got a nice cyberpunk feel to it. But cmon installing xp on a ssd takes about 5 minutes plus a few extra for new drivers. Your router is important but if it's too much effort than install a software fire wall for the pc. Win xp firewall is ok for filtering incoming connnections but outgoing ones from an infected machine will fuck it up.
Michael Wilson
Sadly you are wrong. Auto port scanning software is constant. I check my logs quite a bit and holy shit anything pointing direct to Internet is getting waves and waves of scans. I've installed vnc server on a honey pot for college and within ten minutes port 5900 had an user user and the mouse was flying around soonafter. Firewalls kids, they're important
Owen Thompson
XP on a SSD isn't good
Kayden Scott
So, some chinesse autistic faggot gets in your Pentium III with Windows XP and an antiquated contability DOS program (incredibly common for some reason) of your paint shop.
What is he gonna do with it? What is he gonna steal? Your catalogue of vinyls? The password of your facebook account?
Joseph Lopez
Eh why exactly. If you say because swap file then toy haven't been keeping up with ssd tech out the fact that you can put the swap on a hdd after install if you're worried
Bentley Edwards
OMG I use Windows Vista to log in into my bank account, how scared should I be? Am I being careless?
Carter Phillips
You dont know shit kiddo. You got your Internet open? Great well now they can see your gmail login Firefox passwords. Our the classic is they encrypt your entire drive ams leave toy a desktop background with instructions on how to pay them to get it back.
Jason Wood
Just download POSReady 2009, you can get it right on Microsoft's website for free and actually have updates for another three years.
I'm actually installing it on my netbook as I type this
Andrew Butler
If you're using an up to date browser then you should be ok.
Josiah Sanchez
This. Seriously, go get a legit 2k9 from MS. MS was so done with XP at that point that there's no online key authentication. You can grab a legit working key from any of a dozen places And have a fully working XP Pro SP3 installed in a few minutes. Run Windows Update if you want to.
You won't immediately suffer infection if you're not a retard about what you do online, but don't think it's bulletproof just because it still receives updates.
It's also fantastic to toss into a VM.

You're still here? Go to the subscriber downlaods and check the size and checksums of the ISO you want. Then go to some torrent site and order the torrents for size; find one that's the right size according to the subscriber downloads info, and after you download it verify its integrity.
>good fucking luck finding an original XP image on the interwebs.
I got it on Kickass like three weeks ago. There are a few and they all have a couple seeders.
Jacob Scott
I don't really filter my LAN traffic. So he has "access" to every computer on my LAN.
Cooper Adams
Can you get by with Windows 2000? If so, you can get the ISO for that quite easily without activation BS.
Josiah Reyes
>not just using POSReady2009 >not having at least one genuine XP license
Are you literally retarded
James Richardson
>auto port scanning software What the fuck kind of threat does this pose to an XP system behind a firewall not being used for a server? Firewall your shit and disable unnecessary services, it's not difficult, you should be doing it anyway regardless of whether you recieve updates or not.
Port scanner bots pray on the weak who use default passwords and usernames on outward-facing servers, they don't waste their effort throwing a bunch of obscure edge-case exploits at deprecated operating systems.

... windows xp cant play yt videos -,-
Hudson Kelly
Yes it can/
Thomas Brown
ok. a bitch website lied to me. it said windows xp dont support html5 and youtube uses html5 for the videos
Angel King
Windows XP's browser probably can't, but if you're using a 15 year old version of IE you've got bigger issues
Jaxson Robinson
???????????? Most major browsers (namely Firefox) still support XP SP3 in their latest versions.
Charles Bennett
No fucking shit
Aiden Wilson
I get what you meant, didn't really mean to quote you
