A true edgy Sup Forumsentoman lives on the limit, no backups.
Also install gentoo.
[urmom@gentoo] cp /* 192.168.1.44/bup/
Cronjob or just manually every now and then? Also do you actually just cp or do you use rsync
gentoo
drag and drop
An SSD that I got on sale. it just werks. I back up every 6 weeks.
Sftp server
I don't have enough HDD space to really back up everything. If it's important I just copy it on to other drives in my computer.
I'm thinking of building a backup server using RAID 5 for this (I don't want to buy enough drives for RAID 6). Could be fun.
SSH file server
an external HDD I got for Xmas. Works well. Backup every few weeks when I remember.
fsarchiver. Bonus, use lvm to snapshot, so i can back up a mounted partition.
I haven't done it yet (currently using genisoimage to manually make backup isos then I copy them to a DVD), but I plan on creating a separate server (Ubuntu) and using rsync.

I tar everything and use dropbox.
RAID
Redundancy is not the same as backup.
that is the joke
I didn't get it, can you explain?
assuming you are not trying to troll
RAID IS NEVER A REPLACMENT FOR A BACKUP
The point of RAID is to have high availability of data
if a HDD dies, then you may be able to rebuild it and recover from the loss
or a second (or third) HDD might die and then you lose all the data anyways
Also, RAID does not prevent again
- corruption
- deleting something you didn't mean too
- hackers deleting things
- complete system failure
Backups let you recover from these things if done properly
I know RAID clearly, but I meant I didn't understand the joke. Can you explain the joke?
Finally have space for a backup, what's the best way to create a backup?
The joke is YOU.
private trackers
Basically this, for me. I don't have anything on my desktop (all user folders automatically mounted on the server at login), so my server handles everything. I crontab cp. I have multiple drives (single partition) mounted for different storage types, so I had to build an identical array and use multiple cronjobs for them. 2 for each drive. I also did an analysis of server traffic over a few months to determine the best low-traffic time to run them (multi-user household).
install gentoo
I have my own home server that i host files on.
Copy and paste files over to an external hdd
an nfs mount, dd and crontab
