Subwoofers

Whats the best real cheap subwoofer for the money? I want over 100 watts, 10-12 inches and $100-$165. Is that possible?

Look on your local Craigslist for a while and you'll find one. I got a Klipsch RW12D for $50 and that does the job.

damn didnt even think about that thanks for reminding me

I have this sub and I love it.

I have a Klipsch Synergy sub that the internal amp died. I nig-rigged a car amp to it because the BASH aftermarket amp been sold out for years.

Still sounds nice.

Im using a PSW10, For the price its fucking great. Had it for about 5 years. I use it with two polk monitor 60's and a CS1 center. Rear speakers are just some old small shits i had from an old box system, but they are very good for what they do.

Wharfedale Diamond

at those specs, probably Dayton SUB-1200

OP here agian. I'll buy the Klipsch you have for $150 lmao

>I want over 100 watts
Power requirements are very dependent on the use scenario and design of the subwoofer itself. People often completely exaggerate the power requirements for audio equipment. Ported or sealed?
>10-12 inches
This is meaningless unless you want to show off the physical size for whatever reason.
>$100-$165. Is that possible?
Used yes.

FR and features such as crossover freq adjustment and phase control are much more useful bits of information and specs. You ought to know your system and its response now to properly choose a fitting sub. A measurement mic and a way to do some simple DSP gets you far if you know how to use them. Then again, you are on a budget here.

Used Klipsch Reference series subs or maybe some used SVS if you can find those within your budget would be worth looking into.

Check craigslist or local Facebook yard sale pages. I got a wireless Polk Audio 225w sub for $20. I shit you not. Thing has some serious power. Generally if someone is clearing out a house they don't really know what some audio paraphernalia is worth so they may list it just to get rid of it.

>paying for subwoofers

Shit, I got two or three lying around that I just found abandoned in the woods.

Shiiiiiit

Well, are they any good?

Two of them are very loud, perfect for movies and niggabeats.
The third is a shitty old Sony that sounds awful and prefers to rattle my walls rather than make any noise itself. Not sure it even goes low enough to be called a subwoofer.

>I want my car to use more than x gallons per mile
u wot?

>Implying speaker wattage is in any way comparable to vehicle fuel efficiency

It is. Power consumption v gas consumption.

No. The wattage rating is what the amplifier puts out, not what it consumes (just like a computer's PSU). If anything it would be comparable to an engines power output, in which a more powerful one is generally faster in some way and a more powerful amp can make speakers louder.

We're not talking about amps are we?

A speaker requires an amp to drive it. Most likely OP is talking about active subs which have a built in amp.

I have a psw10 in my bedroom, looks good, sounds great, kicks hard. Would buy again.

>2016
>buying active loudspeakers

>Have a PSW10
>Love the absolute fuck out of it
>Only spent $70 on it new
>Can wake up my neighbors with it

Just do it, OP.

>buying a passive subwoofer

That's what everyone who isn't a teenager does

why the fuck would i hook a passive sub up to MUH SURROUND SOUND you dense fuck

>muh base
>so loud xD
underage

>2016
>buying a separate amp
Works both ways bub. Most high end stuff that's not audiphile placebo shit is active, whether it be home listening, studio production, or PA.

...

Define high-end

Most hifi speakers are in fact passive

K

my receiver has a fucking subwoofer preout and not that kind of connection

That's a fucking standard speaker cable input

...

BIC F12 nigga, bought one off eBay (the guy still sells them) for 160 to finish off a 7.1 system, it's phenomenal. Clean, tight bass, loud if you want it to be, but also goes down to 23hz from my measurements. I had a PSW10, but it chuffed (aka loud fart noises) like a motherfucker on anything in that real low range.

Why would you purposely avoid bass (that's how it's spelt)?

Do you not know what the word means? It refers to the expensive shit.

>Most hifi speakers are in fact passive
Hi-fi is a shitty marketing term and not the same as high end. The shit you're thinking of is most likely the aforementioned audiophile crap.

inb4 bose is high end

Why the hell would anyone run forty foot of wire to the subwoofer and back for the front speakers?
The amp has separate outputs for speakers and subwoofers.

Everyone here seems to talk about how loud it is, not how well-defined and controlled it is, so essentially teenagers who think it is neat with "muh loud base xD"

Name one high-end active speaker brand

Who cares? Copper wire is cheap as fuck anyway.

I suppose that's a fair point. That said I'm in my mid 20s and still like some loud bass, however I do like quality and bass doesn't take preference. I wouldn't be able to enjoy my music anywhere near as much without a sub but that's partly down to some of the genres I listen to.

FBT.

Neumann, ATC, PMC, Quested, ME Geithain

>Why the hell would anyone run forty foot of wire to the subwoofer and back for the front speakers?
The only legitimate scenario that I can think of is that you could use it even when the amp doesn't have a dedicated sub out. Some amps, stereo ones especially, don't have a subwoofer pre out, but a sub can still be useful if you don't have room for floorstanders that can extend low enough and are using bookshelf speakers.

>he has screws placed that unaesthethically
>he didn't even bother painting it black

not that guy, but i'll disagree with you on the meaning of "high end"

people who put together good high end sound systems know there are certain models of speakers/amp whatever which are high performers, and which of those high performers are actually expensive or inexpensive

only people who haven't done their research think that high end is necessarily expensive

the same goes for the term "audiophile tier" when it refers to equipment, although that term usually means expensive as fuck, but again, there are exceptions

copper wire isn't expensive, but its not cheap either, for AWG > flimsy 16

Step aside peasants nobleman coming through got this for a steal only $1200 650 watt 119 db and 19hz its worth over 4000 (AUD) the neighbors complained because it shakes there house so i cant have it to loud

High end has a different meaning to just being good (or even great). Generally the stuff that sounds really good but is cheaper will be lacking in some way, be it build quality or features, where as the truly high end stuff that is expensive (but justifiably so, unlike a lot of audiophile shit) will have the features and build quality to go with the sound quality. Perhaps think of it as a professional tier/grade.

One example would be Superlux, some decent sounding stuff for ridiculous prices but built like shit. Some of their stuff may be able to get close or even equal headphones that would be considered high end but they themselves are not.

Dont get anything smaller than a 12 inch rated capable of any more than 45hz at RMS if you can help it

i disagree the truly high end stuff is all superated and purpose build it will have no features my 4000$ vincent amp has less features than my cambridge audio sr10 but the vincent sounds worlds better its actually night and day

bump

Wharfedale is great.

Had one of these for a while, Tannoy SFX. Was bretty gud as a first subwoofer. I kinda miss it.

There is no good cheap subwoofer. Unless you're willing to invest at least around $500 or so, you'd be better off putting that money towards better speakers - they will reproduce more bass than your shitty $100 muddy niggermachines will

You could try svsound.com/pages/merlin

It has a database of common speakers and what crossover points you should pick for your subwoofer. I followed this guide and the transition from woofer to subwoofer sounds flat to the best of my hearing, though I don't have an instrument to verify this

What's it paired with?

focal 807vw with a Vincent sa-31mk

and source is cd-s7dac with cds and pc I recon cds sound better thou

used shit or grab a 12" driver and amp board off parts express and put it in an mdf box. The sub I put in my car beats the shit out of just about anything under $5-600 and the materials cost was maybe $80.

I think of a small dog when you use the word "subwoofer".

I hope you die some calculations. Just dropping a speaker into a box is wasted money.

this is correct, but you can find reduced priced versions of good subwoofers (
