Like: Super cheap (300€ refurbished and that was a bad deal) Upgraded to 10GB ram and 250GB SSD for another 120€ so no I handles all tasks I do on it fine (office stuff, browsing, data analysis in R) and is performing well at that. Keyboard is godlike Track point is nice once you get used to it Really small and portable Feels solid and well-made, outside finish really nice Good connection options (VGA and Ethernet plus 3 USB ports) so I can attach a monitor and a mouse to it and have a cosy setup at work
Cons: Screen is too dark in light situations and only 720p, plus it's 16:9 So little screen real estate without extra monitor The fans get really loud even when idling on windows 7, so I only use Linux now, where the fans only get loud under heavy load

Not very humid, I'm in Melbourne, Australia. I walk past a few refurbishers everyday on Elizabeth St and there's always a couple Macs with ugly black marks on the right palmrest.
Yeah, could be just skin rubbing on it over and over, that would get past the anodized layer after a while.
Cooper Allen
This isn't corrosion, either, this is actually worn past the anodizing. I've seen this, but only in very high use situations with people who don't care about the machine, like libraries or schools. Not just on MacBooks, either. >Yeah, could be just skin rubbing on it over and over, I would guess things like jewelry, watches, rings, maybe, if they are stored in a large bag, other items hitting the laptop. Rubber pads, I suppose they are there to protect the LCD if you squish the screen when the lid it's closed.
It's actually not irl, the chassis is metal, the door is magnesium and the palm rest and lid are aluminium. It's as sturdy as a thinkpad.

I've never had issues like these... I keep mine in a case and everything is pristine. I'm careful with it though... treat the fucker like a baby considering how much I paid
Luke Jackson
Hmm, those rubber pads look like they're in stupid positions because they would be where the screen is when closed. But since the lid on Elitebooks are tested to withstand up to 1000lbs (435kg) weight, I guess HP knows what they're doing.
Luis Cruz
I buy from companies that refurbish business class laptops from corporations - Thinkpads, Elitebooks, Latitudes etc.
Evan Baker
I treat mine like a baby as well, still got marks on the palmrest, everywhere else is absolutely pristine.

At least your hands don't touch them when you type, I think it's a worst case scenario measure, in case you step on it or something like that. Otherwise there's a rubber seal around the edge of the screen instead of individual pads.

>things I don't like about it -soldered ram, proprietary storage -less ports and expansion than non-Retina MBP for muh thinness -along the 'muh thinness' train, the display and top clamshell is one piece. If you fuck up your display be ready to spend $500+ for a replacement that would be less than $100 on any business laptop -aluminum shell shows up imperfections easily -vents heat onto the bottom of the glued together display assembly -by default CPU will heat up and throttle before increasing the fan RPM -if you're sitting facing a bright light source (like the sun), light will shine through the apple logo on the back of the display putting an apple-shaped brightspot right in the middle of the screen.

Basically I want a cool and quiet laptop with a backlit keyboard, and a good screen and speakers that sacrifices performance and battery life to get that in as inexpensive a format possible.
My current laptop is a HP envy dv6-7214nr and it's really hot and it's got so much flex that I've broken the screen just by picking the laptop up by the corner with one hand while it was closed, and I've jammed the fan by picking it up with one hand while open. It has the zero battery life thing down, but it's heavy as shit so I think I need something else.
Ideally I would just get a super light screen + keyboard that's in laptop form but has no guts and just connect it to my desktop computer with an HDMI cable but that product doesn't exist from what I can see.
Easton Price
I think lot of the new and relatively cheap laptops fill your criteria. It's in the last couple of years that FHD displays and backlit keyboards became standard on cheaper laptops. Look up notebookcheck for reviews.

What I love most is probably the keyboard, very good spacing and travel. Really pleasing to type on.

I have the newest one - the 9350 (see the processor I listed in my original post).
Go on r/dell and you will see that the coil whine and touchpad are still issues. Just a roll of the dice if you have them or not, some don't. I bought mine a few weeks ago so it's still happening obviously.
As for the wifi, it comes with broadcom wifi that many choose to replace with an intel one for $20 or so. Personally I haven't had an issue with it as of now, so I probably won't replace it if I don't have to.
