Throttlebook Pro

I got to use this laptop for a few months because the company that I work assigned it (it's still better than shitty thinkpad t540 as windows/linux alternative).

But holy shit. The thing never works at full performance. As soon as I start compiling stuff, it just throttles way down to 800 mhz because the shit easily reaches 99C. I thought that was faulty but everyone's macbook is like that. So basically fully aluminum shit can't even cool a fucking CPU. The screen, trackpad, build quality overall is very good and unlike any other laptop I've ever seen, the OS is at least unix with great fonts.

But there is no way you can keep the CPU above 2.5ghz. This is literally a fuck you to the owners. I'm glad I haven't paid for this shit. I will probably go for dell xps 15 as my next windoze/linux laptop. At least it doesn't throttle or your warranty is not void for replacing the thermal pads.

>he fell for the apple meme

I avoided apple meme to fall for Dell XPS 15 4K.

Mine seems to run fine (rMBP 15"). It usually hovers around 37 celsius when doing average work, and 60 celsius when doing some heavy processing. You can use smcFanControl to force the fan speeds to be higher if you need to, but I'd make sure it's not defective (if you're still using it).

Post a timestamped picture of it.

>at least it's UNIX
Gave it away right there, delete this bait NOW

timestamp

fans are too loud I think.

take it

ISHILLS BTFO

Now copy your post into textedit and post a photo.

yeah i almost bought one, but then i saw that a shit load of people had overheating issues in the mBP. lol its just normal they live with it.

THERMO PIANA

haha

Bad choice

what the fuck do you want

it's definitely problematic and apple doesn't claim that it's a fault.

i had a macbook air that throttled

bsd is unix, stop being a memester neckbeard.

macs are better. You cant fuck it up

if you mean imac 5k, then you can be right because you can't buy a 5k monitor and a i7 4790k based pc at that price anywhere else. idk how apple was actually able to sell something at that price.

osx is a unix certified operating system.

I think he meant the OP post.

you should repaste after the warranty ends. Applel is known for overapplying thermal paste in their laptops.

No piece of paper will ever turn your toddlerOS pajeet skiddie code into UNIX code.

fuck off from the thread back to >>>/reddit/ with your shitty "le pooing indians and gay CEO xD" memes.

i don't have a mac

>he uses chrome and ms office on his macbook
No shit it's getting throttled, those apps are terribly optimized just for the sake of you wanting to switch to their own products.

ti dolbaeb? huy sosi, ebanie suka.

pizdets.

OP is full of shit.

>>Late 2013 Macbook Pro 15" 2.5Ghz

Sup Forums's resident XPS marketer is at it again

Stock clock on this model is actually 2.3Ghz, Turbo Boost pushes it out to around 3Ghz pretty consistently.

I got i7 4980HQ model.

>212°F

Are you that guy from yesterday who couldn't install python and the other week when you couldn't figure out how to quit a program?

>throttlebook pro

It's not a problem

sure, things will be fine. keep running those burn in tests without any kind of real cooling.. it'll all be fine..

100C is the thermal limit at the die, senpai.

OP is either obstructing the cooling vents, or is using the computer in an environment that is already far too hot.

Apple's specs page says 35C ambient temperature is too hot for the Macbook Pro to operate optimally.

i7 4980hq goes up to 4.00ghz in theory. But it never exceeded 3.20ghz. huge kek

I'm just running a video encode using Handbrake, good core utilisation, good real world demonstration.

Keep in mind, that temperature reading is on-die, the CPU proximity reading is 68C. By the time it reaches the Fin Stack it's only 49C.

Yea, it will.
It's 105C max.

Did you know that manufacturers can change turbo multipliers?

>i7 4980hq goes up to 4.00ghz in theory

Single core Turbo Boost.
Most applications these days won't utilise just one core.

it says up to 4.00ghz on apple website, too.

>It's 105C max.

Not according to Intel.

>>TJUNCTION 100 C

AHAHAHA FAGGOT

>constant 100C

fucking shit, how can they even fuck the shit up with huge heatpipes and a whole aluminum body? even shitty T420 with quad core i7 attached can't exceed 90C with that shitty one pipe cooling.

That's not at all healthy. If you regularly do work that makes your laptop reach 96C, then stop using your laptop for it.
Apple gets shat on a lot for this, but I'd prefer an OS that throttled my laptop to make it always stay below 90C than one that would let my die burn.

windows on macbook directly throttles it down to 800mhz while os x just lets it burn at constant 100C.

lolll you niggers are so cucked

I don't think any of you have any idea what you're talking about.

This computer is not overheating, 98C at the die is perfectly acceptable. There's over a dozen other temperature sensors throughout the machine that monitor thermal performance, and if any of those values went too high, the SMC shuts the computer down.

It's a nearly three year old machine, worked as hard as that fairly regularly, and hasn't had a single problem, not a single thermal shutdown.

>98C at the die is perfectly acceptable
FUCK OFF

On the die, yes it is.
Intel's spec sheets say so.

>98C at the die is perfectly acceptable
>2 degrees below the temperature where the hardware itself shuts down to avoid being irreparably damaged is perfectly acceptable
Christ.

>On the die, yes it is.
>Intel's spec sheets say so.
Stop arguing with people that have no idea what they are talking about. They are here to spout memes and make themselves feel better before they get bullied tomorrow in school again.

Why do you think you know better than the engineers?

TJMax is maximum operating temperature, stupid.

degrees below the temperature where the hardware itself shuts down to avoid being irreparably damaged is perfectly acceptable

Intel's thermal limit is 100C, once it gets to that limit it will start to throttle, it's almost impossible to thermally damage a CPU these days, unless you do something retarded like crank it to 100% with no cooling or some other retarded shit.

>Christ.
That's not completely correct. It's only 100 for the old CPU in OP's case but it is pretty much consistently 105 for the following models and different people posted screenshots here.
There were a few MBP models that had serious cooling/throttling problems like OP described them but these are old models now. The problem was kinda "fixed" by CPUs having lower TDPs these days and what OP describes is no longer an issue (unless your machine is defective). This doesn't make it good or Apple any less shit but spreading lies (as in: this is still being the case) is not gonna help.

Honestly, it's fine.
Macs are actually well engineered.

If you kick up the fans to 85% speed it'll stay around 80C, even.

Now look at my post and make a picture of it

Yeah, the max is 6000RPM, but it rarely gets up that high.
Good balance of cooling and fan noise.

> magbook DDD
Cucked winfag can't type : in his filenames

I'm on OS X, faggot.

Where did your :DDD go, then?

How many watts do SSDs use a piece?
I was thinking of getting two 240gbs but I want to know if I need to upgrade my power supply for that

Unless it's some crazy specialist high-performance drive, not a lot. Laptops will often see an improvement from going to an SSD so they use less than a 2.5" drive. Probably no more than a few watts each at most.

So no, no need for a new PSU.

>Macs are actually well engineered.

I haven't seen it get up there on mine, but I don't have an i7. Mine will rarely break 50% speed. I manually set it to 85%.

...

Can confirm. Macs are pieces of shit. Mine melts my thighs right off if I make the mistake of watching a HD youtube vid full-screen or watching webms for too long. Don't even get me started if you try to use it outside on summer, it goes into like 200 C and sounds like a leafblower. Quality hardware my ass, I was amazed when I learned this is what macfags have been living with the whole time while touting their superiority.

Wait 100 degrees while compiling? Imagine lying on bed watchin anime while compiling something, damn.

My shitty 4 year old laptop doesnt go over 80...

The default fan curves are retarded. I use smcfancontrol to manually set the fans to 50%, 75% or full blast depending on what I'm doing. Also got rid of Chrome and I don't watch any HD video thru Firefox since its shit and packs on the heat. I can stream 4k thru Safari and it doesn't even warm the CPU enough to kick this fans over idle.

I had to do similar things with my T420 because with turbo on it heats up to nearly 80C. You dont want to be running your CPU near TJMax because even though your CPU can handle it, the components close to it will begin to break down. I actually killed my rMBPs SSD because it was going to 90s while playing WoW.

The rMBP is not really a machine you can do too much CPU intensive work on it because the cooling took a backseat to being thin and pretty for normalfags. It's a sad thing but I'm hoping Apple comes to their senses and makes a laptop that can hang with the best of the Pros instead of a deceiver that's nothing more than a premium word-processing and internet machine.

Apple if you're reading this get your shit together. People who use your computer's for real work are a big part of your success.

>Firefox since its shit and packs on the heat
It's not really firefox's fault. It only works fine on any other PC, but on mac you get third degree burns and lose your hearing. I'm having to use an rMBP too and it really still feels like some sort of cruel joke to me.

Let me buy a brand new Super car then fix all the roads so I can drive it. That's not how you problem solve.

Sure buying a $1800 (lowest config, upgrading to a 4790k increases the pricr to $2100) AIO with a 5K display is probably more sensible than buying a $1500 5K monitor and a PC for some people but someone who needs a 5k display probably does intensive work. The 5k imac also suffers from throttling so it isn't really a good match for video editing and such.

>using ithings for actual work
they're made for rendering webpages and checking email

Apple are still selling the 2011 Macbook Pro on their store.

This is how much they care.

>build quality overall is very good and unlike any other laptop I've ever seen
>can't even cool its CPU
>g-good build quality guys... !

>a CPU running consistently at 96 degrees is totally fine

I wouldn't want a laptop that can cause third degree burns

Which CPU is that?

>temp goes up when downloading stuff
>temp go up when updating brew
>temp goes up when watching 1080p with mpv

man, I'm starting to regret buying this now. But with the formfactor and batt life, it should be ok right? I don't think the xps 13 would be any better too?

Here is laptop with only 68 degrees cpu on idle but dont worry its chilly 50 when it reaches your lap. Whats not to like?

>xps
They're good from what I've heard. Was going to buy one until I was assigned with my present throttlebook

Macs are bad because of the gay stereotype that exists solely on this board because of Sup Forums and Sup Forums 14 year olds shitposting, also apparently having a gay stereotype attached to it means the computer is inherently bad somehow because this is middle school. Use windows senpai buy an DELL™ XPS 15

did we hit a nerve :^)

>a CPU running consistently at 96 degrees is totally fine
Yes, it is.

Buy some of this and clean out your computer you dumb fuck. I've had a MBP for 5+ years and it can run at full speed on the GPU and CPU for hours. Clean your fans from the back or open it up and blow out the dust.

Even on Windows Firefox performance is poor compared to the other browsers. If it weren't far and away the best browser for using addons I'd have dropped it a long time ago. As it is I use it just for Sup Forums and sites that don't play well with Safari.

>If it weren't far and away the best browser for using addons
That's all the reason you need for using it. Too bad that they're dropping that upside soon, making every single browser on the market either shit or lackluster

>Macs are actually well engineered.
He said, while posting a picture of a device that one could boil an egg on.

You could not.

>CPU at 99C
No, you pretty much could. Just as well as an egg could be boiled on a GTX 480.
On top of that, two shitty turbine fans spinning at 4.4k and 4.1k RPM will sound like a bloody jet engine too.

This is, as a matter of fact, anything but well engineered. If you think it's well engineered, you are delusional.

You're a retard.

Daily reminder that Applel products are shit

Ah, the retorts of an Apple fanboy.

Not even, you're just a retard. You're not boiling anything on a 48W chip.

>Temperatures within 1% of boiling point
Right.

Did you even pass high school?

>CPU nearly running at the boiling temperature of water is fine

Being able to cook meals on your laptop must be truly convenient

>thinks a CPU runnung at 98 degrees is fine
>calls others retards

At least your overheating memebook has probably ensured that you won't be able to breed by making you infertile with heat

yeah, it's totally fine, especially for a mobile device with a non swappable battery

the delusion of iusers is fascinating
