You can install the last compatible version of the app if you try to download it through the App Store on your iPhone. However some countries may not have this option. I remember trying to help some German on here get skype on his iPod touch 4, when it required iOS 7. He couldn't download it but my 3GS on 6.1.6 could because I'm an Ameriburger.

Sounds like you have ios dev experience, does apple even make it possible to support both new and old versions of ios in the same app? The android sdk has a lot of effort put into allowing backwards compatibility and it's still a pain in the ass.

If by you mean supporting 4 year old OSes and the current one. Yes some devs do that. Good example is Blizzard with Hearthstone. It requires iOS 6 and at minimum an a5 device (iPad 2, iPod touch 5 gen, 4S). Developers can have support for older OSes but that really changed in the later part of iOS 8. For example every app that requires a profile or mdm requires at a minimum iOS 8.3 because of hardening in securing relating to enterprise (from what I can remember). The apps before this did support older versions but given the glaring security flaw fixed in that version they decided that it would be the new minimum. As such anything that doesn't run an a5 or newer can't use the recent app. I am of the person opinion based upon statistics provided by Apple that if total older OS usage accounts for less than 5 percent of total usage than it should be dropped. For example, apple's recent sampling of the App Store shows that 86% of devices are running iOS 9 and 11% are on 8. The remaining 3 percent are on 7 or lower. That remaining 3% should have support dropped since they are not statistically relevant. Which would only really affect people using an a4 or older device. Everyone else newer than that has the ability to update if they want security and app support.

Tl;dr android backwards compatibility can be good but it just ends up being shitty like Windows. Time moves on and things need to be dropped if there is real progress ahead (not change for changes sake). Besides iOS doesn't have the capability to receive OS security updates independent of firmware updates (like android). It's foolish to use a device in such a state these days.

Depends on how much the 5S sells for where OP lives. Here in Germany people ask ridiculous sums for obsolete iphones. I think I've seen people pay 150€+ up to 200€ for iPhone 5Cs.

If that is the market, just get a good bang-for-the-buck android like a Moto G or a Redmi 3 Pro. You get a way better phone that will last you longer. And if you're not a technically inept normie, you can put a custom ROM on there and get updates after the manufacturers have ended support.

They do. Look here . However when I last tried to help someone in a different country with this 2 years ago, they couldn't download. That has likely been fixed by now. Also it's up to the developer if they want to host older versions of apps. I know that tinder pulled all of their older versions when switched to their plus system back in March 2015. Not like it matters though because such older apps would be denied access by the server much like snapchat, Skype and others.

Motorola Droid {X,2} seem usable even now and both are upgradable (unofficially) to KK. LL (and MM) are too different and make any port difficult. (Even recent devices cannot run them.)
