If possible I try to run software with portableapps or I don't install it but extract the installer into a directory and run the main executable (works sometimes better and sometimes worse than installing. Main advantage is that I don't clutter the windows folder)

It was audited after the devs quit. There are some minor flaws but all in all it is still good. Veracrypt is viable after its own security audit.

I'm sorry you can't get conky to work, friend. I've been using Ubuntu as my daily driver for about a year now and I can't be happier. Some of my positive experiences.

1) for really learn linux use Gentoo or Slackware
2) pacman don't erases your custom configs, but save the new on .pacnew
3) for a safe server don't user linux, but bsd. OpenBSD is most secure OS in the planet
