Comfy Windows 7 & XP thread

Loaded up Windows 7 in a VM, and I can truly say that I miss that OS a lot.

Should I ditch Windows 10?

Yes, yes you should

I really think I should as well. Could you point some things out for me? I really want some reasons to make me switch.

better the devil you know

>Better the devil
Um what?

Bump

Virtual Box or VMware?

If you want to miss out on Vulkan goodness. Why not just switch to linux?

It's an expression. Like "sell and pay the tax later than buy and repent now"

VMWare

It's on Windows 7...

Oh

Yep, Windows 7 is still pretty solid until 2020 when they possibly drop support and updates for it.

I think that 7 may end up being the ever-lasting OS that they're forced to keep supporting because so many people refuse to switch (or hate W8/10 after trying it).

The only reason why I am kind of hesitant to going back is because of performance, Win10 performance is much better.

Bump.

Yes. Run win7 in a virtual machine in linux and you may go through a bit of hell finding a linux that works for you and is to your liking but it's such a good way to go. Pretty cushy when it's all up and running and plenty of options for all sorts of things.

I had Ubuntu and I deleted it, not the biggest fan of Linux. I like how Windows just fucking works and I had to jump through so many hooks and shit to get something working.

I will still use Linux for older machines that might have problems with Windows, but if my PC can handle it I won't.

Windows 10 has:

+ Slightly better performance
+ Flat > aero
+ Can right click on Start to bring up CMD, control panel, programs and features etc
+ CMD can go full screen and CTRL-C + CTRL-V
+ Better task manager
+ Task view
+ Better snapping
+ Better search for settings etc
+ DX12 (still mostly irrelevant)

- UWP which is being forced more and more
- Botnet
- Bugs, because it's still a fucking beta and it will be for a long time

I dunno lads, I've been on the fence for a long time and I'm using 10, but I always wanted to go back to 7, however I don't think going back to a 7 year old OS is good in the long run

>+ Slightly better performance
Arguable.
>+ Flat > aero
Don't need either when I can customize the GUI.
>+ Can right click on Start to bring up CMD, control panel, programs and features etc
winkey + r or right click on desktop is faster
>+ CMD can go full screen and CTRL-C + CTRL-V
Now that's an actual plus.
>+ Better task manager
I don't even use the vanilla task manager.
>+ Task view
Don't need, desktop from sysinternals works fine, just doesn't have the animations.
>+ Better snapping
AHK scripts imitating linux tiling are still superior.
>+ Better search for settings etc
god mode control panel is better and can be activated on windows 10 as well
>+ DX12 (still mostly irrelevant)
no games that use it or Vulkan interest me yet, and I'm on an AMD GPU

Vulkan supports GNU/Linux and Windows 7.

Are you thinking of DX12?

win7 is the best version of windows

>+ Slightly better performance
tru

expose but weaker, i'll take it

vulkan pls
>- UWP which is being forced more and more
nah uwp is sick win32 should be taken behind the barn and shot
>- Botnet
true, fuck the botnet
>- Bugs, because it's still a fucking beta and it will be for a long time
yeah

Aero is love

What theme is that? Might steal it for my rice

>first sign of instability after 7 years of using Windows 7
It begins

I recently switched back to win7 from 10.

It really is comfy

Win7 will go down in history as the last thing Microsoft ever did right, because since then it has been all zunes, windows phones and bloated start menus. I'm not even mad, now everyone is switching to Linux and the software support is skyrocketing. My clueless parents are on Ubuntu and they brag to their friends that they don't get viruses, everything works and everything was free. It's time people. Thank Microsoft for helping you realize Linux is ready for anything and join the mass exodus.

I agree, people will come

Should I reinstall Windows 7? I am on Windows 10 but it is so resource hungry.

If you're on Skylake, stay on 10. Below that? 8.1 and 7, dual boot with 10 if you really want it.

Put Ubuntu on my old laptop and gave it to my grandpa. He learned how to use everything in a week. He used Windows back in the day and likes Ubuntu much more.

Performance is better, you can test it yourself.

Agreed with everything. I don't know if I should go back either.

Damn so older people are getting into Linux. Is your Grand pappy good with computers?

I see no real difference in performance since the win7 OS is on an SSD. Noticed slightly increased CPU usage since the CPU fans audibly pick up compared to my win7 partition during very light use.

Damn, wouldn't it use less than Win10?

Think about what (if) brings Windows 10 for YOU that Windows 7 can not. And think if it's worth the bugs and forced telemetry, updates and the crap UI that it has to even deal with. Imo, just use 7. It's probably the best desktop OS out there right now.

It really is, and I really fucking love it. Honestly what has me kind of iffy is performance, I don't want to lose muh FPS in games, and more and more DX12 shit is coming out.

Turn off internet-related processes and CPU usage obviously goes way down in windows 10. It was probably defender acting up again, I removed that from 7 while I didn't on 10.

Fuck, I absolutely hate Windows defender, I removed that shit from my Win10.
What do you mean by Internet-related processes?

The intermittent pinging of Microsoft servers by windows 10, setting internet to metered, turning off the ability for the OS to "seed" itself torrent style as part of windows updates, and turning off windows updates as a service in general unless you really want to update. Also the attempt by Microsoft to be helpful by searching the internet for you when you do searches.

Ah okay. Do you have it off?

As of the latest update, no. All the shit I turned off were turned back on or re-installed with the anniversary update. Said fuck it and went back to 7, I'll re-visit my windows 10 partition in 2020. Until then I gotta pick a linux distro to stick in this cheap ass 750gb ssd I just bought.

How cheap is it?

Crucial MX300, a little over 200 USD

Fuck hopefully 1TB SSDs drop to $100 for Black Friday or Cyber Monday.

Just fresh installed windows 7 on a new pc, got my drivers all ready.

How do I update this OS without becoming a zombie in the botnet?

hey Sup Forums
my win7 oem key won't work anymore after new hardware; cpu motherboard etc.
how safe ( technically ) are these cracked ones ?
my other option would be to check one of my sisters broken laptops for a key since she doesnt use them.

You probably only play games, so install updates that are game-related only.

daz loader off mydigitallife

Install security updates, nothing else.

That's very vague. The idea is to keep my privacy in tact, I game very little.

Then don't install any updates at all aside from updates that improve performance. SP1 out of the box works well without updating anything. Look up each update. Firewall up.

ok I'm going to update security like that user said, use a firewall, and update as I go as necessary

>Loaded up Windows 7 in a VM, and I can truly say that I miss that OS a lot.
I do too, but DX 12, Edge (it really is the most CPU efficient browser, seriously try it it extends battery life quite a bit) etc.

>Should I ditch Windows 10?
If you're not on a laptop and don't care about DX12 gaymes then yes.
Then again you could easily switch to Linux in that case.

about to buy a new windows 7 key
not sure if premium, pro, or all the other versions

>just works
This is what I like about Linux desu. Windows 10 was too big of a change and pretty much destroyed everything that made windows 7 and 8 good operating systems. After I used 7 for a bit I switched to Ubuntu and was surprised to see how everything I needed worked out of the box.

Pajeet pls

>+ Slightly better performance
>slightly
I'd rather have an OS which doesn't come with bloat preinstalled and ignore the "slight" difference.
>+ Flat > aero
>stop liking what I don't like
>+ Can right click on Start to bring up CMD, control panel, programs and features etc
You can do that since windows xp by right clicking on the task bar right? Other than cmd. And you can always make shortcuts for other things, or just search for them.
>+ CMD can go full screen and CTRL-C + CTRL-V
Why would anyone make it full screen?
>+ Better task manager
It's pretty much the same
>+ Task view
It's not useful, why list it here?
>+ Better snapping
Another unimportant thing.
>+ Better search for settings etc
This is somewhat true.
>+ DX12 (still mostly irrelevant)
It's always going to be irrelevant, unless you want to play windows exclusives. Not everyone uses their OS to play games. And I'm sure in a couple of years you should be able to play them on Linux or win7/8 somehow.
>- Botnet
This exists on every windows version. Of course, it is manageable and can be significantly reduced on previous ones.
>- Bugs, because it's still a fucking beta and it will be for a long time
It's going to be their last OS from what I hear. Each release will have it's own set of bugs, it will never be 100% fixed.

I did it 2 days ago, and when it comes out, I'm dual-booting with Elementary OS Loki

feels pretty comfy fampai, ditch the ultrabotnet today

i just disabled all windows updates and installed malwarebytes

I felt like this at first as well, but if it means that I have more freedom, I don't mind having 5 less fps in games.

I'm still using Vista and I like it.

I miss Win98 SE

that was top comfy

>new desktop juste got win7
>X220 on its way
>I'm now setteled for thé next years waiting for win 10 not to ne shit

>flat > aero

uninstall your fucking life dude

7 and XP start menus were trash, good thing 8.1. removed it completely.

I have Win7 and Ubuntu on my X220. Good combination, but I never use Win7 because the thing runs hot with fans blowing loudly even when idling, web browsing sounds like having a blow dryer on. On the other hand, the CPU doesn't get nearly as hot and the fans only crank up when I do computationally intensive stuff. Also, multiple desktops are so comfy while working on a small screen, I couldn't live without them.

Won't new games support DX11 and older as well as DX12?

He had one in his office 15 years ago, used it for documentation and music.

>nah uwp is sick win32 should be taken behind the barn and shot

I cringed. Opinion discarded.

If it runs hot idling with 7 then you don't have it installed/configured properly, Windows 7 is the most power efficient OS you'll ever install on that machine by default.

what version do you all recommend for VM use? Win 7 Enterprise LTSB?

Learn to fucking speak English, and always poo in the loo.

I think windows 10 is pretty ok.

As opposed to windows 7 being pretty great

Is W10 Enterprise LTSB N good? I've seen many people saying it's the best because of no Cortana, no Edge and all the UWP shit, but I've also seen people say it doesn't even get new drivers because of no feature updates

8.1 and 10 are much more efficient with your CPU over 7.

[citation needed]

I've just ordered a new laptop which comes with no OS pre-installed, first time I'm going to have a completely blank slate.

I'm still wondering if I should go with a Windows 7 or a Windows 10 LTSB on it.

So far, this thread hasn't helped me decide :(

comfy af
dualbooting windows 7 and Linux

It's not too bad, better than the standard editions.

Unnoticeable difference

agree

Can you buy a LTSB license or should I just download it from somewhere like a man

feels alright

I think you have to be a MSDN subscriber and then you can download the ISO. Or just search for it, I'm downloading right now from some Chinese website
msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions

Yeah I saw that twitter account with links to different LTSB editions, I'm considering downloading one of those

twitter.com/WZorNET

Mind sharing that Chinese website? How sure are you that it's trojan free?

wtf does comfy even mean in this context

it's zoeyrule . com
I checked SHA1 and it's legit, gonna try it in VM

VMware ofc

Very nice, simple, and comfortable.

>Chinese Website
Enjoy your key loggers,

>Flat > aero
That is not an argument.
>Better task manager
I agree on this one. Windows 7 task manager looks like shit.

Looks really nice

I would love to have LTSB

see

Fuck that

Clean Windows 7 install with no updates or install Reactos for my new thinkpad?

Clean Windows

Love how you're downplaying Windows 10's botnet, which is essentially embedded in its very kernel. All of the ignorant much recommend to "uncheck the boxes" but that doesn't stop Windows 10 from phoning Microsoft's vast servers, which document and store all of your data. I bet you even took a picture of yourself when you first logged into Windows 10, huh? :^)

Thanks. Should I install service pack 1/2 or just leave it as vanilla Win7?

Just install Windows 7 Pro with all updates.
