hows this any better than kindles? first time seeing it

bigger screen, lower price, epub support, more storage

also kobo now owns overdrive (public library ebooks) though I think kindle works with it too

Get a cover too, I accidentally scratched my ereader screen in the interval between getting one and eventually getting a cover.

nips made it rather than those filthy gaijin

I'll wait for some reviews and probably ask for one for Christmas. Looks good desu

Does it still need Windows to set it up and is it still a forced registration?

No reason to upgrade from a Nook Glowlight :P

Does it let the Jews remotely delete content from my device like the kindle does?

>hurr durr what is airplane mode

Or you can just refuse to buy crap that has backdoors planted in it.

And the kindles does have a backdoor that lets Amazon delete your books, they've done it before.

nytimes.com/2009/07/18/technology/companies/18amazon.html?_r=0

No Kobos do anything like this.
No backdoors, and you can mod the firmware if you want.

>no backdoors
So it's 100% open source?

Or you can just buy the device with a butter UI and better hardware and just use fucking airplane mode.

github.com/kobolabs/Kobo-Reader

This really sounds like rationalisation. Why buy from a company that is trying to fuck you over?
I bet in another time and place you cry about 'voting with your wallet'. I hope you're not a libertarian.

Are you one of those people who buy free range chicken eggs?

where is another place you can buy books? Not that other guy you were talking to, but buying books from the kindle store is so awesome compared to trying to pirate .pdf scans. I don't mind buying stuff. So where do I go?

My parents bought me an original Kindle Fire when they first came out. It's a single core POS now that lags turning pages. I have a Samsung Tab A for general browsing. Would I just be better off getting the Kindle app thing for Android?

>all these niggas who dont know bout #bookz

I want a backlit e-reader but not for that much.

Kobo Aura or Aura HD/H2O?

As far as I can tell the only advantage the last two have over the original Aura is a slightly higher PPI. Is that worth double the price?

>but buying books from the kindle store is so awesome compared to trying to pirate .pdf scans.
are you that incompetent.

just buy Glo HD

Can I add a micro sd card to it?

the differences aren't huge. I'd still be happy with my HD if I hadn't broken it. I have a H20 now and the waterproof feature is cool, but not really something I'm worried about.

you only need a high res display if you read manga or comics a lot and even then the HD has one of the best screens on the market still. I'd say get an HD they should be cheap secondhand nowdays.

Uh, what?
Kobo has a bookstore, nook has a bookstore, and you can still use amazon bought books on a kobo.
You have to strip the DRM but it's doable.

My kindle has epub support but I can't argue against any of the other points.

Why are there still no physical buttons? If I could get a waterproof reader like the h2o with page turn buttons I would be all over it.

I really don't understand their reasoning for this one.

I have an Aura HD. The main reason I chose a slightly larger model at a higher price was because I wanted to read manga as well.

Now, a single long series can end up at 8GB by itself. Why the heck would I buy a 229€ ereader with no micro SD expansion slot?

Because most people read books, not chienese porn cartoons. Weirdo.

i want physical page turn buttons. why do none of the newer ebook readers have them???

pic related, its what im still using although its beginning to fall apart

Windows fucked up kobo driver stuff in anniversary update.

Waiting for next patch is torture.. I just want to read some books

>on Sup Forums
>using windows

Actually if this is like other kobos, it has an internal microSD slot.

Ever opened your Aura HD?
It has a microSD slot inside.

I just want an e-reader with a screen the size of letter paper so I can read reference textbooks.

Is that too much to ask?

sorry homie this ain't got no microsd but it is 8G

with the 7.8 screen and a legit touchscreen you can pull it off with the aura one im convinced

it's not as smooth as a current-gen smartphone or tablet, (or touchscreen thinkpad/xps), but it has a newer version of the original aura which has pretty decent pinch-to-zoom. plus the aura one has more ram

Zooming in is not good enough.

You need to be able to see the whole page.

Another thing you might need is an easy way to jump around the book, and that is not implemented at all in all the readers I tested, they're all designed from reading a book from cover to cover in a linear fashion.

i used my kobo mini without registration and without windows

on my desktop i use linux with calibre

btw kobo source code is on github

and stop spreading FUD

> physical buttons
no
you don't want physical buttons

>no color e-ink
dropped

i wouldn't mind separate controls for page turning on the side. Bending your thumb and touching the slightly coarse icky surface every time and wondering if the touch registered is a bit annoying.

Sony DPTS1
It ain't cheap though

Is it actually for sale, though?

I remember reading about it but I never found a place to buy it. It's all either "backordered" or "Not in stock."

have fun waiting 10 years

it was on sale on amazon for $600 a month ago, i guess they'll backordered now

How to advertise for free on Sup Forums: ask people if they are going to order it or what their thoughts are on it.

Personally I think a 7.8 is okay for textbooks, but I still prefer using my laptop. You do know tablets only recently surpassed 10" screens? And larger tablets are a whole nother price point.

I do wish kobo upgraded the processor though. I think that is the bottleneck.

>How to advertise for free on Sup Forums: ask people if they are going to order it or what their thoughts are on it.

OP here. I'm glad kobo is expanding their market with a 28 people.

Yes I do, using the touchscreen to turn pages is fucking horrible. It's harder to hold on to the device securely, your thumb obscures part of the display, and it takes a lot of effort to go back a page vs forward.

I'm using a sony prs-t1 since 2012, still working fine the only problem is that selecting a word tries to open the dictionary and that usually freezes the device and the dictionary can't be disabled... probably lack of memory.

it is kinda awkward, but you learn. its also the same way ALL tablets work. kindle has removed and added it back over the years, so who knows.

the aura one has a SleepCover TM which looks like it might mitigate this (overpriced as hell, though third parties will be out eventually.)

I'll pay the ~600$ it cost for something just like that but with color e-ink.

I might get one of those, I used my Aura H2O daily, and while it is an awesome device overall it sucks for some things.

Does it have expandable storage? If so I am preordering, if not then meh.

Everyone knows about #bookz

no sir. but it does mount under linux.

my aura has a 32G microsd and honestly its exhausting traversing the files on the device, but I've never really messed with the search functions.

>color e-ink
Nice meme bruh

Bigger screen, Overdrive, blue light reduction and epub support. That's about it.

I'm not going to pre-order because it's not available for pre-order in my country, but I'll definitely buy it.

If it's anything like other kobo models it has an internal microSD, so yes.

I also have 32GB sd card in mine, and it's a bliss. I might survive on 8, but if it had expandable storage I'd pre order it this second.

I have quite a lot of comics, mangas, and image heavy pdfs

There's been a very detailed review today by some German eReader enthusiast site.

> allesebook.de/testbericht/kobo-aura-one-im-ausfuehrlichen-test-69985/

In the closing words he said it's the most perfect eReader to date.

Forgot about IPX8 waterproofing with internal NZO nano-coating and flush screen.

would be so awesome if it could switch to landscape

thanks senpai

i split the pages into 2 and read it sideways.
not a great solution, but it works.

Shame he didn't pop it open- Kobo internal storage is usually just a microSD card

But it can?

At least I guess they don't remove a basic software feature which has been on every other model

But then you'd probably lose the water resistance

Why couldn't they just add an expandable storage port like on the H2O?

b-but i just got my kobo aura h2o

have I been cucked, Sup Forums?

No. Actually, haven't connected my Kobo to the internet in 3 years.

never new it existed

I had a friend who got one two days ago, I think it will suffice for him though.

They are nutritionally better.

That's the only thing I wish it had.

thanks senpai. apparantly it only works on pdf (which i don't read on my kobo. makes sense.

>They are nutritionally better.
just leave

Why don't they make the screen flush with the bezel? It's very annoying when dirt/crumbs gets stuck at the edges.

Why did you buy it if you knew they were going to release a superior model in a week or so? We knew about the Kobo Aura One for 2 months now.

I use it all the time on cbr and cbz files. While I am not sure if it's available on Epubs there is probably some non-shit format which allows you to do it.

actually, now that I think about it, you probably CAN pop it open.

The Kobo H2O's waterproofing was achieved by having a sealed case. The ONE's waterproofing is achieved by nanocoating the internals (hence why the USB port is exposed).
Which means you can probably change the SD card.

That's the old Aura H20. The new Kobo Aura One is completely flush.
Kobo Aura, Kindle Voyage and Kindle Oasis also have flush screens.

they do. original aura did, and the new aura one (this thread) is using the same technology. it's flat like a tablet but still e ink

i still wouldn't take that shit in the tub. call me old fashioned i guess.

for PDFs, use KOReader (alternative reading software that runs side by side with the stock firmware). It's great.

cool senpai. also i think the newer release of netbsd supports very old kobos.

I guess I can gift this one to my mom and buy the new Kobo for me.

The H2O variant is waterproof, and as such is limited to using IR touch technology which always has a raised bezel like that. Capacitive touchscreens don't work underwater.

motherearthnews.com/real-food/free-range-eggs-zmaz07onzgoe.aspx
kys by eating poorfag eggs

>buy Kobo Aura One
>Amazon or some other manufacturer releases an even bigger model a few months later
This is probably what's going to happen. I want to buy it now, but I also want to see what Amazon has to offer.

I've been waiting for a large e-ink carta high resolution display for so long. 7.8" is ok, but I wouldn't mind 8-9". What are the chances of Amazon finally releasing a large Kindle now that e-ink carta is officially available in ~8"+ sizes?

no one here cares about eggs retard. kek

I wouldn't count on it. Kobo's first >6" reader (the Aura HD) was released over 3 years ago. Still nothing larger than >6" from Amazon (not counting old hardware like the Kindle DX).

>get proven wrong
>pretend to not care
if you're that emotional, you probably should go back to that website where you can downvote

>$229
Dropped

>Lower price

>tfw people are calling the new e-reader you just bought 3 days ago "old"

It's cheaper and much better than the ridiculously overpriced Kindle Oasis.

Here they never decreased the price on the old model (which is very much inferior), I understand those people who are regretting it.

Your fault for buying a $160 reader from 2014 instead of waiting a tiny bit longer for a vastly superior $230 model.

Free range chickens don't get a natural chicken diet the entire article is unsubstantiated bullshit, they are still factory farmed and the difference in quality to caged in fat content is literally only because the chicken is burning more calories walking in circles.

Also I eat eggs raised from chickens that live in a vegetable garden and anyone that thinks "free range" is better hasn't had a good egg.

I honestly thought Amazon had crushed them, I am glad to see this because I am a huge enthusiast of e-readers.

I'll buy it eventually.
