So now that the dust has settled, what's the consensus on the rx480? fail or win?

so now that the dust has settled, what's the consensus on the rx480? fail or win?

it serves it purpose mostly, but its a bit undercut by the 1060 that can edge it out in many situations. But regardless, the 1060 does cost more.

The 480 fails in regard to the RX 470. The 470 is cheaper and offers practically the same performance. It doesn't do enough to differentiate itself from the 470.

If we simply look at the Polaris line: yes; Polaris was a success. But individually, the 480 is stuck in a bad position between the 1060 and the 470.

How good is the FP64?

naruhodo...

what's your favorite anime

what does this have to do with anything

just answer the question pls

I just want to know.

No.

then get out of her thread, this is an anime website
>>>/reddit/

RX480 is for people who want to spend ~$200 for a GPU they'll keep for maybe 3 or more years.

GT 1060 is for people who want to spend ~$200 on a GPU that will perform a little better than the RX 480 for a while then mysteriously worse the moment Volta cards come out in a year or two.

>anime posters are superior to non-weebs
Fuck Off. This is Sup Forums

ITS YOU! WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?

anime websIte

nani?

Is this why people hate tripfags? Jesus Christ

only thing were the the 480 is really a beast is VR and DX12/Vulcan rest is true of your comment

/Thread

ahh yes, forgot to mention that. As well as computation if anyone is into that.

This. If you want to save, 470. If you want better performance, 1060.

im going to play games on it

so you can filter them.

I love Maki!

I love you!

only in dx11 games better performance you should add

Well if you're willing to run the botnet you might as well get the worst card of the 3 and go with the 480.

Refer to

Fuck off, degenerate waste of space

your quoting 3 different people desu...

470 if you play on 1080p 60fps high to max or 144fps shooter
1060 if you want to max dx11 games on 60fps
480 if you want to max out most dx11 games on60fps and have really good performance (fury level) on dx12/vulcan which gives you furture proofing the 1060 can´t give you.

with shooter i mean cs:go or lol and dota2 and all the other f2p games run 144fps easy with it.

RX 480 is £230 in uk
GTX 1060 is £239

:|

how much is that in real money

>people tell me that the 390x is way better than the 970
>mfw it costs almost twice as much in my bumhole
AMD can't into competitive pricing outside of the US it seems.

in Canada at least, pricing has been well. The Fury X retails $200 under the 980 Ti here

How much did it sell? Will AMD stock skyrocket again at next earnings? The 480 wasn't included in the last one.

I'm going to marry Maki!

you must be into cuckolding

No, I'm into Maki!

Dumb anime poster

The 480 is an utter failure. The 470 is a decent value card. The 460 is an iGPU slapped onto a PCB that ends up barely outperforming the 750ti.

As usual, AMD promised too much and delivered dogshit. Their perf/watt isn't even better than NVIDIA's perf/watt was two years ago.

He is not complaining about people posting anime, he is stating that the people who post anime is dumb as fuck, just like you.

we're all into her ;)
i bet you'd like dressing up as maki too faggot

- Major power issues
- Worse than a 1060 for the same price

It's pretty shit desu senpai.

>mysteriously worsen
What?

Conspiracy that NVidia gimp's their old card's performance via drivers.

>As usual, AMD promised too much and delivered dogshit.
They promised that the RX 480 has GTX 970 performance, while still within the $200 range, which is what we got. The biggest issue I would say that they had was the supply of 480s.

>They promised that the RX 480 has GTX 970 performance,

they promised 2.6x perf/watt improvement and delivered a less than 1.5x perf/watt improvement.

>They promised that the RX 480 has GTX 970 performance,

AMD never made any claims about raw performance in their marketing materials.

>while still within the $200 range,

the 480 is de facto a $240 card, the 4gb variant isn't even being sold.

Do people really believe this?

Nobody actually believes it because it's not true, but AMDtards love to say it every chance they get because they love to lie.

Just like AMDtards love to say the 10 series has no hardware async, when it clearly does.

Gotta try and sell their shitty cards somehow I suppose.

I just find it hilarious every time gimping is brought up because my gtx 680 is still performing fine, my brothers gtx 570 is still running shit fine, and my mates hd 6870 sucks shit in everything released in 2015 and newer.

He upgraded to a 1070 last week cause he got tired of AMDs shit.

no. it's BS that amd shills perpetuate to justify themselves buying overclocked rebrands and 'supporting the underdog'.

yes, no idea why they do. It comes from the "AMD drivers boost performance over time" thing.
This is partially true. Pascal can't get the same margins of gain that AMD does.

don't let your inner NVidia goy out

>Pascal can't get the same margins of gain that AMD does.

only because more of the pascal gpu is already utilized, 'async' has become a catchall term for any design pattern or technique that improves utilization of AMD's GPUs, something that is a big problem in DX11 (just google for info on amd driver overhead, they've been dealing with this for years)

Async compute is the gpu equivalent of hyper threading, how much a card gains doesn't always relate to how much is being utilized. Their driver overhead is only CPU related too.

it's a semi-meme that came to be because the HD 7000/8000 (1st gen GCN) series aged better than the GTX 600/700 (Kepler) series, due mostly to continuity of architectures.

pascal isn't really much more than a shrunk down maxwell, so the GTX 900 series should probably have decent driver support longevity.

yeah, the HD 6000 series (TeraScale 2/3) support got dropped about as hard as Fermi did.

I'm rocking a Radeon 7770, what graphics card should I buy abd how much is it, considering I don't wanna spend over 250

470 is such a good deal desu. for a midrange card.

what the h*ck is all this nerd talk I just wanted to know if it's good for games

Fermi is still getting game ready drivers, but unfortunately it seems like it won't be crying dx12.

Could probably thank AMD and their terrascale shenanigans for that

NO

^^^ poster here
Sup Forums isn't tech support, fuck off to Sup Forums if that's all you care about

>they promised 2.6x perf/watt improvement and delivered a less than 1.5x perf/watt improvement.
I thought that claim was under "ideal conditions" with Vulkan?

>AMD never made any claims about raw performance in their marketing materials.
I know they promised over 5 teraflops of peak performance. Pic related.

>the 480 is de facto a $240 card, the 4gb variant isn't even being sold.
You can find 4 GB models off Newegg for under $240 (when they're in stock), but from what I heard they have 8 physical GB. I was thinking of getting Sapphire's card for $229, but apparently it gets over 80 C even with an aftermarket cooler on it.

>how much a card gains doesn't always relate to how much is being utilized
This is completely false. For async to provide a performance boost the card must have execution units (cores/shaders/whatever you want to call them) that are sitting idle and are not being used during 3D rendering. This can and does happen, due to scheduling, the load the software (game) places on various components of the GPU, etc. Those idle units can be used for async compute, because they're not doing anything else otherwise and you're now getting better performance by offloading some more shit to the GPU which had resources available anyway.

Now, if the card does not have as many idle processing resources, then it won't gain as much from async. If AMD can't feed its GPUs properly in DX11, they will partly remain idle. And they indeed cannot, as evident by their forever recurring issues with DX11 CPU overhead. In come DX12 and Vulkan and suddenly not only is the CPU overhead issue vastly improved, but you can even use async to get even better use out of the GPU. If a different GPU arch (Pascal for instance) doesn't benefit as much compared to DX11, it can mean that:
>NVIDIA is capable of feeding its GPUs properly even in DX11, or at least does a better job than AMD
>NVIDIA's arch may be less prone to leaving processing resources idle

I'm more of a drafting guy than a gamer but fuck it I'll put my two cents in
Honestly as long as it has good FPS I'm fine

ahh ok thanks user. I understand what you meant now.

>260 instead of 275 dolloors
seriously what the fuck is with these cocksuckers and their god awful pricing?

It's not bad but has some issues and the 1060 is better

it burns motherboards very nicely

>mates hd 6870 sucks shit in everything
literally runs everything at 1080p (while also powering another monitor) fine, just fine...
although only 1gb is being a real pain in the ass now.
kinda regret not getting the 2gb, but that was priced like $40 more

>rx480
>not nani sore edition
dropped

a second 7770

these cards can reach over 90 before force shutoff
and over 100 before any actual damage happens

Gta v 1080p 55fps average low settings.

Same cpu my brothers gtx 570 averages 60 fps on low with some settings turned up.

>"Pascal can't into async compute"
>"yes it can"
>"no it can't'
>"YES. IT. CAN. REEEEEEEEE!!!!"

...

>I make shit up for fun, possibly profit.

no they do it for free

That's too hot for me. I might get an MSI RX 470 to replace my R9 280x. Thoughts?

you're going to buy a rebrand because?
how does the ammount of heat it holds affect you?
turn up the fan speed if it matters that much...

Kill yourself stupid manchild

>MSI RX 470 to replace R9 280x
I'd say go for it. I replaced my 3Gb R9 280 with a 470 and the difference in performance was like night and day.

The 480 received more attention than it deserved, while the 470 snuck in under the radar.

still too early too tell, wait until vulkan gets widespread implementation.

>you're going to buy a rebrand because?
Because it will run cooler and quieter than a reference blower card. Also as of right now, you can get the MSI one for cheaper than any reference card on Newegg, so why not?

>how does the ammount of heat it holds affect you?
Well a card with less heat is always nice, and more heat = faster fan RPMs.

>turn up the fan speed if it matters that much...
My 280x doesn't hit 60 C as it has Gigabyte's cooler on it, but man does it get loud, even with over ear, closed back, headphones on.

The 470 and 480 seem close enough in performance to not justify the extra cost, at least for me. I was either going to upgrade this generation or maybe wait until the 5xx series to see if they come out with a new architecture.

>The 470 and 480 seem close enough in performance to not justify the extra cost
I, and many others like me, agree. The extra $ isn't worth the 5-10% performance improvement, especially when you can overclock the 470 easily.

Here in Australia, the cheapest custom 470 is $299, whereas the cheapest custom 480 is $100 more.

For price
Its a win

For performance
Its a lose

>For price
>Its a win
>For performance
>Its a lose
For both it's a loss. The 470 is far better value for the performance it delivers.

Mobo destroyer, wait another 3 months before massive PCI-E failures.

Jesus man. 1 like = 1 prayer. Over here in Midwestern US, the cheapest 470 is $189 (which is an ASUS card with aftermarket cooler on it surprisingly), while the cheapest reference 480 is $199. Sapphire's aftermarket 480 is $239. This is of course when the cards are actually in stock.

Don't believe the Australians shitposting. They make $17/hour as minimum wage.
They LOVE to complain that the prices are high, but the fuckers completely forget that's what happens when you devalue you own fucking money and hand it out like free candy.

Coincidence or conspiracy?

>1060

Me too senpai, CFD doesn't require that much, unless mesh is tiny. Still dont need crazy fps

Wtf, I hate nvidia now

...

why are you pathetic losers always lying on the internet?
450$ is the cheapest old garbage i could find.
check newegg ca, you immature child.

Maki! I love maki! She's a cute lesbian, better than that whore lain.
