Screen Resolution Wars

Situation: PC is old but I need a new monitor, and I'm going to buy a new PC in a few months.

Problem: My current failing monitor is 1280x1024 while I have the option to buy a new 1366x768 one.
I don't see a lot of 1280x1024 monitors and I wonder why, isn't supposed to be a better resolution than 1366x768? What should I go for if I plan to use it for leisure?

Also, since I'm going to upgrade the computer in a few months, I'm considering the option to buy a HD monitor (1080p). Would the higher resolution hurt the performance of the computer since it's using a really old CPU?

Please, enlighten me.

If it really would hurt performance you could still just lower the resolution, no one forces you to use the maximum resolution.

Yeah, but do you think it would noticeably hurt the performance if I use the HD definition?

So you say I should go for a 1080p monitor?

1280x1024 is 4:3 ratio. here in the 21st Century we have gone widescreen.

1280x1024 isn't wide screen.

1366*768 is a ghetto resolution that you got on cheap laptops back in 2008. What's wrong with you

and not using the native resolution of the monitor gives you a poor quality image, right?

Why are you so poor?

what the fuck? i had (almost) your resolution back in 1988, how the hell did you still use it well into 2016?

>shortscreenfag math

1280x1024 is 5:4

I'm not a big fan of wide screen to be honest. But I'm guessing the change is unavoidable.

well, if your OS is modern (windows vista+, any os x, compositing x11 WM) GUI is 99% based on the GPU. So, barely.

My personal opinion - buy a 2560p monitor (it doesn't necessarily has to be wide); you can even set the scale to 2x if you use OS X or some x11 magic.

So you guys are saying I should go HD?
I won't really go 4k because it's kind of retarded.

4k is the future.

Thanks! I'm using Windows 7 so it should be fine. The GPU is far better than the CPU so it shouldn't be a problem.

Hm interesting option...

Sure, but buying the novelty usually means you'll spend extra money without getting a lot out of it.

Some modern displays are not wide-screen: there's a recent Chromebook with 2560×1700 which is much larger and roughly 3:2.

this is so retarded

Get a clue about what pc you can buy in a few months and what resolution will it support. There's no helping you here without telling us your budget and your intended use of said pc.

When you know this, in order to be cost efficient (if it's a problem) you buy a monitor with a maximum of that resolution. Everything scales back, you can use it at VGA if your current pc can't push it.

Yeah I didn't check a lot of stuff cause I'm waiting for the tech and prices to settle down after the new directx and the ddr4 technology. I'm considering spending around 2k, obviously for leisure (games, movies) purposes.

Get a 1080p or 1440p monitor. But make sure that it has an IPS panel. Tbh I would rather have an IPS panel (better color and viewing angles) than a higher resolution.

When there are already 5k and 6k monitors? 4k is a fleeting fad

2560x1440 at 27" remains the true top tier option for monitors

>Bet you wouldn't say that if you had a 4K monitor, you poor fag.

Even a pentium 3 from 15 years ago can handle 1080p desktop fine

I can definitely buy one, I just don't want to throw away my money like that.
