that's not bad! I have had my 8320 since they came out steady overclocked at 4.2ghz. Always been able to play games at max settings in 1080p. just now after all these years thinking of upgrading to a new intel processor. The 8320 will last you a while though if playing at 1080p

I have no desire to exceed 1080p. There isn't enough improvement to justify anything more vs the cost. I can get a 40 inch 1080p tv for dirt cheap.

This whole project is going to be built into a modified desk with a plexiglass top so it's more about the DIY project than anything else. But I do not think there is a single thing this cpu can't run currently with an OC so it should be fine.

you might get about 4.1-4.2 ghz for 1-2 years before the power delivery dies from the motherboard

You can get an i3 setup for basically the same cost but with much newer features, and huge upgrade potential without buying anything else but a CPU.

they're fine for gaming but if you want to do anything like streaming or transcoding or rendering video then the FX is going to beat the shit out of any i3

Sure but the platform potential is significantly greater on the intel. The single core performance of the quad cores is more than enough to beat the AMD 8 core, and the hyper threaded quad cores are even better than that.

If you are worried about overall performance surely the intel would be the smarter investment at this point in time. At least until AM4 boards are out and you can get Zen.

The M5A97 r2.0 has VRM cooling which is really nice for OC'ing.

my desktop runs a supermicro board with 2 xeons I got off ebay

Right now there's not any good options really
you can get a AMD system with a newer board, since some of them come with m.2 and most modern amenities, but they draw a lot of power and you have to OC them to match up with even 2 year old intel's
or you can get a intel system for a hundred or so more and sometimes see noticeable performance gains

on cpumark there's not a huge difference between the 8350 and even skylake

you could have gotten a used 2600k+mobo for cheaper. i did it recently and it's a big step up from the fx-83xx CPUs.

Second...Fuck waiting for zen. There is absolutely nothing I cannot do with this cpu right now for less money without waiting. It was a good deal so why the Fuck not.

Third...heat concerns. I have 4 120mm fans so I'm pretty sure cooling will be fine but thx for the heads up.

Single core performance. Anything that can use 2-4 threads will run better on the i3. Anything that can use 6-8 threads will run better on the AMD

have access to a 1440 144 that was 600~$ the 144hz is fantastic, but i could care less about the 1440 if it meant i could get more of a lock on always 144.

Get some 2133 ram, careful not to get more than 2 sticks because for some reason vishera can't do anything higher than 1866 when using all 4 dimm

Probabily get a 1060 cuz multithreaded driver memes but you'll prob run anything at 1080p 60fps with a 470 unless you're playing some shit like early access or unoptimized games.

Also be careful about that psu, it really doesn't like heat and it's full power is rated at 30c.

i got a 4690k and a z97 mobo for 285 dollars, and it shits on any fx processor except the housefire 9590 but that's only in multicore performance.
