Are there any games out there that make a game of programming? Not some simple educational site that gives you points for completing a project, a fully developed game that includes actual programming challenges?

Yeah its called trying to make a living. The better you get at solving client specific tasks using a certain programming language the more money you make, you can use that money to buy food and shelter.
No no no. I already have a good job with a solid career path. This is for shits and giggles.
>Pick a language of your choosing (java will get you far, dont believe the memes you can always learn more languages unless you are a retard)

But, yeah, most everyone is right that you just kinda start learning to program and go with that. Find a challenge (people around here seem to cling to Fizz Buzz) and try and implement it.
I mean, there are kid games for programming... Like the Python intro where you make a turtle walk around to form shapes.

Still for education and learning, but definitely a game.

Yes, stockfighter.io
I had a lot of fun with Human Resource Machine. It teaches you asm, more or less.
(store.steampowered.com
Scratch
It teaches you C. Bubbly like a child's game, and simple to use.
>It teaches you C
Scratch is great and all, but that's not the least bit accurate. I'd say it's good at teaching the basic overall concepts of programming.
Probably not what you are looking for, but check out codefights
Just program game cheats son. Why else would you play lame ass games?
If you're into ASM: store.steampowered.com

Spacechem. Sure, it doesn't have a formal text based programming language. IDGAF. It's still essentially a bunch of resource constrained multithreaded programming problems, complete with leaderboards for the most optimal solutions.
Not really programming, but
emacs -batch -l dunnet
It's an old text adventure game with some sysadmin/hacker aspects.
Do you know leekwars ?
Leekwars.com
Yeah, C is a pretty good joke. :^)
Else heart.break();
It'a a fun game.
i love that game

standard levels + they make competitions regularly
you can use many languages + external editors via chrome extension... it is fun
they have single and multiplayer levels too

That would be like making a video game about stocking grocery shelves.
