So I'm trying to find alternatives to gmail and I'm baffled at how shitty the market is. Here's what I've come up with so far. If you have any comments on these or other email services as proper substitutions to free services, I'd love to hear them. I'm especially interested in stuff I can sync contacts and calendars with on both Windows 10 and Android if that even exists.
mail.com Pros: - Has a premium ad-free option. - Has a lot of free domain names to pick from, most of which are stupid, but at least mail.com isn't. Cons: - IMAP and app support are premium - Suspicious how unpopular an email service called mail.com is. - I have yet to figure out if you can sync the calendar with standard apps and how because their website is glitchy as fuck. I got a bad impression about the whole thing here because it doesn't seem like syncing is a big deal to them. If I figure it out, I'll post about it. - Fails to work on Pale Moon.
gmx.com Pros: - An email address that ends with gmx.com doesn't look stupid on a resume. - IMAP support - Calendar - Has its own smartphone app Cons: - Can not sync contacts or calendar, even when using the fucking app. So it's basically as useful as IMAP support. - Is eerily similar to mail.com despite having no premium option and more free features. Also fails to work on Pale Moon.
runbox.com (Premium only. Cheapest package at $20/year) Pros: - I don't know. Cons: - Doesn't have a calendar feature. Not worth my time.
Yahoo.com Pros: - Perfect for obese baby boomers to chat about the weather. - There's emoticons, chat, a news feed and other such never-seen before features. - When it works, you can go "Yahoo! I am receiving electronic mail on the information superhighway!" Cons: - Yellow and purple are an objectively bad color scheme. Anyone who disagrees should be executed.
Fastmail.com (Premium only. Cheapest package at $3/month) Pros: - Seems pretty much like it supports every modern email/calendar service feature. Cons: - I wanted my email address to have a period and a dash, both of which are not supported. Why? Because fuck you.
gmail for business: Pros: - Like gmail except without all the shit people dislike gmail for Cons: - Requires your own domain name. I guess they don't want their common "product" user to transcend their purpose to "customer".
Outlook.com Pros: - Fully featured and shit - Syncs perfectly with Windows 10's mail app and with Microsoft Outlook. Who would have thought? - Secretly supports Exchange ActiveSync if you google how to use it. Cons: - Doesn't allow to edit contacts in Android, unless you use the Exchange ActiveSync protocol. Why? That's only supported on Windows """""phones""""". - The Exchange ActiveSync protocol will, every now and then, eat up several hundred megabytes of data for no reason on Android. I switched to gmail specifically because it was costing me money because of that. - Only supports IMAP and POP3 for non-proprietary email clients. - The security features are annoying as fuck. I lost many throwaway accounts because they wanted me to get a security code from other accounts that I had abandoned. I provided my fucking password. Let me sign in.

No one wants to talk about this?

mail.ru
Dylan Wilson
Cock.li
Isaac Ramirez
mail.google.com
Juan Garcia
What if I am actually successful, and don't live a loser life at my mom's place?
Lincoln Smith
Use cock.li then
Daniel Anderson
Holy shit, just self host it or take the dick and move to gmail. You're spending way too much effort on this.
Sebastian Martin
i did the same
mailbox.org
they've been around since the late 80's, relatively cheap, same features as gmail
oh, and there's a free trial run for a month, no cc required. been using them for over a year and im happy with them
the only con is ebay doesnt work with it because of all the spam they send, thats about it

You wouldn't be posting on Sup Forums, then. Get out.
Isaac Phillips
The market is indeed shit. I changed service yesterday to protonmail.com:
Pros
- Account and mailbox passwords - Nice interface - Hosting in CH - PGP supported (use v2 mailbox to find your pubkey) - Custom CSS is supported for ricing
Cons:
- Added functionality means it doesn't work with mail clients - Aliases cost money
Ryder Jenkins
That sounds perfect. I'll try it out right away.

also remember to set your language during setup and login via the english homepage if you dont speak/read german. otherwise you'll spent good 15mins translating the page after you login to fix it like i did
Nicholas Martinez
host your own you fucking retard >cute domain hack >whatever username you want >look like a smart tech person >no need to trust strangers >unlimited control over your email
Leo Miller
>let your chinese neighbor read your emails
Josiah Phillips
Have to have host kamputah running 24/7... No thank you. My mommy doesn't pay my bills anymore.
Anthony Phillips
You have to trust your hosting provider and domain name registrar
Mason King
>tries to sound adult by admitting he's poor get a fucking job
William Powell
>loses all e-mail communication during a severe thunder storm when the power goes out
Nah, I want my e-mail services to be up 99.9% of the time, plebaroo.
Asher Butler
>not working at a tech company >not hosting on their reliable servers when will summer end
Joseph Hill
>trusting some tech company, while not trusting Google
How would you explain this inconsistency?
Jackson Young
In my experience mail.com and gmx.com are shit. They've closed accounts of mine for absolutely no reason and they keep adding ads to your inbox. They are also the same company.
Anything but Gmail or Outlook just seems like a bad idea to me. If you just need a temporary throwaway e-mail there's loads of options but I'd choose something reliable for serious mail.
Oliver Kelly
>trusting google over your own company's servers How would you explain this mental retardation?
Christopher Hernandez
So if you get fired you lose all your shit. gg faglord
Mason Smith
>no job security smfh
Brody Martin
>their reliable servers >my own company
How would you explain this flip flopping in regards to whose company it is? We both know that you wear a name tag, Johnny.
Cameron Garcia
Host your own
Lucas Sanders
How does it feel to be both autistic and mentally retarded at the same time? Sorry I assumed you might have a job. You're clearly not fit for employment.
Cameron Cooper
Don't be a faggot and get Google Apps for Work , if you want your own domain and no ads
Adam Adams
So what's your answer, kiddo? Or are you just going to pussyfoot around? Whose company is it?
Nicholas Watson
lebin trolling, friend

If you're only managing your own stuff (personal email, personal website, some file hosting for device sync) a raspberry pi is even more than you need, and the electricity to keep that running costs next to nothing.
Dylan Bell
Okay, first of all, job security is a luxury in today's times and lecturing others for not having it is kinda like lecturing a handicapped for not being able to walk. Secondly, job security doesn't guarentee you won't get fired. If they downsize, or if you're not competent, they'll fire you and that's that.
Eli Powell
Nice meme
Cooper Bennett
Don't be an autistic retard, see
Thomas Campbell
>www.protonmail.ch i hear that is the most safe one, is it true?
Nathan Nelson
Don't use a residential IP range then. "Business class" service, a VPS, a rented server, it goes on and on...
Anthony Young
or just use gApps, probably cheaper too
Tyler Foster
own domain + zoho.com
Now with all the new tlds you can just get your firstname as domain.
>When it works, you can go "Yahoo! I am receiving electronic mail on the information superhighway!"

Unless you live in a third world country it's probably unlikely your power goes out more than a few hours at a time. Most modern ISP provided modems have the option for a battery backup due to the on board VOIP telephony shit. You can easily find a cheap power bank and connect it to your Raspberry Pi to keep it powered for many hours.
Adam Brooks
i need to make a new gmail account, my current one with all my real info has an address which is gibberish, and people have given me weird reactions irl
what the fuck though, i'm not dumb enough to use "firstname.lastname@gmail)
Nicholas Clark
uhm, maybe can be a good thing
Brody Jenkins
You need two email addresses. One with your name for work and people you know. One for personal and private stuff.
Jose Jones
acquire craptop acquire domain name host own email server (mailinabox if you're lazy)
Dominic Diaz
if im not lazy then which one
Jason Murphy
Not literally retard, rent a vps
Jordan Cox
>Renting a VPS to make your shitty makeshift email service on your shitty old computer to make all your mail and contacts and calendar route through your shitty ISP then through the server's shitty ISP >all this to have a "[email protected]" address that's off-putting on resumes and always sparks conversation and which may fail at any hour of the day while you're not at home
This is an incredibly shitty way to go.
Nolan Turner
The point of having a VPS is not using your home computer to host anything, it's on a server maintained by professionals that most likely has backup power supplies. You're just responsible for maintaining the software. Also your second point is very poorly thought out. Maintaining your own domain makes you look more professional and less like [email protected]
Seriously if you can't afford a domain and ramnode or amazonaws or some shit you might as well just stick with one of those pleb free services and deal with the cons.
Ayden Lewis
I think a [email protected] address looks a lot more down to earth than a [email protected] address. The latter just makes you look self-important unless you actually have business owning a website.
Jace Rogers
Lots of people I have worked with in the past have their own firstnamelastname.com domains. Lots of them have gmails as well. It really doesn't matter but most of the time the people with their own domains are more competent. I'd have my own but I'm fucking lazy.
This is like /r9k/ level worrying. I sense a profound lack of self confidence on your part.
Kevin Powell
>I'd have my own but .. because it's a pain in the ass and completely unnecessary. you're kinda proving his point
Jaxon Jones
I'm not ocd like him though. If all the porridge is too hot or too cold then it's time to tell that bitch goldilocks to make her own. It's not really a pain in the ass either, I'm sure I could do it in less than an hour, but it is unnecessary for me personally. You might ask why and the answer is that unlike OP I'm perfectly happy with my free Gmail account, so yeah...
Carter Cox
It's not ocd though. I think OPs point was that he wasn't comfortable having his data harvested in exchange for something being "free" and was willing to pay for alternative. In trying to find something to suite his needs found the market to be lacking. I know that feeling because I ditched all google products over a year ago with the exception of captcha on Sup Forums and ran into the same problem while doing so.
Parker Rogers
i think it has its own app too
Christopher Collins
Protonmail doesn't have a calendar though, right? I've come to rely heavily on adding my appointments from any device and getting notifications for them on all my devices.
