If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following: 0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes. 1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it. 2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system. 3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.
Idk, sysvinit (or whatever) for Devuan seems to work fine for me.
DejaVu Sans Mono everywhere except Windows where I use Consolas.
Wildebeests are badass looking
Kevin Roberts
What's your display manager? It's all dependent on that.
Joshua Thomas
bumping for visibility: Why do I have connections to google http servers?
Joseph Gomez
>DejaVu Sans Mono

Siag or SoftMaker office?
In particular I want to be able to install/remove certain parts of the suite.
Libreoffice came pre-installed on my distro and it was garbage.
Ayden Reed
I still need a guide to making a persistent Arch or Buntu USB for my MacBookpro. Idk how it would do with a VM on it and idk about a dual boot. Pls ideas guys?
Brody Nelson
You just partition and format the flash drive and install the system onto it then you simply boot off FD rather than HDD, I have FreeBSD setup like that and it's working just fine but I had to manually adjust something post-installation, don't remember what though.
Nicholas Martin
Problem solved. Plex is the culprit. After stopping the service, the connections disappeared and reappeared upon restarting the service.
Why would Plex connect with google? There's already a connection that goes to plex.tv
Caleb Morales
Three possibilities: 1) It needs some Google service to make some feature work. 2) They have a deal with Google and provide them with some data. 3) They use Analytics for something.
Joseph Wright
Okay I have managed to fuck up my terminal.
While screwing around with the profile settings I have found a tab which was about running commands. So I thought that this is the place where I can set a command thati want to run on starting the terminal. Therefore, I have putted fortune | cowsay into its textbox.
Now the terminal is fucked and I cannot open it. I tried to reset it by deleting the /.gconf/apps/gnome-terminal folder but is does not exists only the .gconf folder.
What shall I do?
Nicholas Sanders
what switches do you usually use with emerge? I want to put up a macro because I always forget the capitalisation in -audn and some additional input on the proper way to emerge seems nice.
Connor Hill
how do i fix this
i like arial but it makes it all messed up
Cameron Jackson
is arial even a monospace font? don't use non-monospace fonts in your terminal.
Mason Allen
for a complete upgrade i use --ask --verbose --update --deep --newuse --with-bdeps y @world
Ian Anderson
I'm home sick from work and have a lot of free time so I decided to wipe my VPS and re-install with a Ubuntu LTS 14 template. How do I achieve the following: >how do I lock it down to keep the Chinese out of it and other fuckers that would want to root it >how do I install a vpn server on it. the last time I enabled TUN/TAP I still couldn't get VPN to work even following the simplest guide step by step >I want git for personal use on it, should I go vanilla git or install gitlab
His display manager has no business starting stuff once his session starts. His window manager or session manager if the desktop environment comes with one is responsible for that.
James Howard
Thank you. Will look it up.
Jeremiah Hernandez
Use Liberation Sans. It's metrically compatible with Arial and free. It also has a monospaced version for terminals.
Jaxon Anderson
Does the emerald decorator work with other window managers besides compiz? Web search returns me nothing.
Adam Bell
what is the openRC equivalent to systemd's systemctl start xdm? service xdm start doesn't work
Xavier Smith
/etc/init.d/xdm start or rc-service xdm start
Jonathan Peterson
>rc-service: `xdm´ does not exist
>/etc/init.d/xdm: no such file or directory
I installed xdm, do I need to turn it into a service first? xdm is located in /usr/bin/xdm on my system.
Aiden Hernandez
did you not try doing /usr/bin/xdm start ?
Andrew Fisher
>xdm error (pid blah): extra arguments on command line: start it definetly needs to be launched as a service, as just executing xdm does nothing at all.
Justin Martinez
RHEL/CentOS/Fedora vs Debian/*buntus
FIGHT I G H T
Elijah Harris
debian. does everything you want and could ever want
Benjamin Taylor
Why are you trying to make this a thing?
Camden Hill
The correct place for such commands is your ~/.bashrc.
To reset your gnome-terminal run in xterm: gconftool --recursive-unset /apps/gnome-terminal
>rc-update: service `xdm´ does not exist I emerged xdm and the executable is there this confuses me. will read though and see where it takes me.
David Smith
turns out I'm missing the xserver and some other stuff too. I was expecting those to be covered by the -D part of 'emerge -auDN xdm'.
Adrian Phillips
RHEL/CentOS = Best Server Fedora = Best Desktop Ubuntu = Best Gaymen Debian = Social Justice
Sebastian Turner
Haha, that'll do it.
Jonathan Thompson
is there a better GNU/Linux distro than gentoo?
Zachary Green
Funtoo = best everything.
Easton Reyes
no
Benjamin Ross
No, funtoo is more convenient to install but after that is mostly the same distro.
Austin Jenkins
How do I change my dns server? networkmanager seems to overwrite resolv.conf
Connor Hughes
I want them to acknowledge white folks have done nothing wrong, males are alright and an important part of society and women don't need special treatment
I just want to hear as many opinions as possible
Interesting

Debian is fully SJW, more than firefox
David Parker
Which mail server do you use and do you use a web frontend? And how do you get google to not mark your shit as spam?
Connor Adams
Perfect, thanks!
Robert Smith
>RHEL $ in a class of it's own. Nobody uses this unless they need the support. >CentOS and Debian Stable Good servers, not desktop material unless you like your packages to be years out of date. >Ubuntu and Debian Testing Good Desktops, relatively up to date, relatively stable, best for normies. >Fedora and Debian Sid More up to date and less stable desktop option, better for devs than normies.
Average users should stick to Ubuntu.
James Campbell
Redpill me on openSuse
Owen Thompson
GOD tier package manager >Shit wiki >Shit non-free driver support
Joshua Evans
Only retards who need support use RHEL. Nobody is using Fedora.
Let's be honest. We pic the distro by the logo. If the logo is shit, we woun't install it.
Connor Mitchell
Speaking of
Bentley Jenkins
I switched to gentoo, it's okay.
Eli Gomez
Install Trisquel
Thomas Brooks
Best Desktop = Easily Ubuntu, not even a close contest. Debian Testing maybe if you want to be edgy and contrarian. Fedora is a joke.
Landon Harris
>Nobody is using Fedora. Literally millions of US government employees are using RHEL and Fedora.
Benjamin Ward
>ubuntu >good
go away marketing
Josiah Sanders
>Fedora is a joke. If it's a joke, I would hate to see what Ubuntu is. Fedora has been more stable than Ubuntu since at least 12.04 LTS release. 14.04 was a crap shoot. 16.04 is complete balls. Fedora 24 OTOH has been silky smooth.
Alexander Edwards
Fedora can't even boot on my 8 year old desktop because my graphics card is only 3 years old. It's complete shit. Even Debian Stable, of all things, can run just fine. How the hell do you call 24 "smooth," without laughing?
Colton Morgan
Debian stable cannot boot on new hardware - that's by definition.
Hold packages for 4 years and call it >stable If you are looking for jokes here's one
Brandon Wilson
Ubuntu is shit since they decided to use non-free programs and the covered smegma kernel that is linux torvalds creation.
Want a software that respects you ? Follow this nigger and install trisquel at least it use a cleaned version of the linux kernel
>Librefags are here Suck a commie cock, nobody cares. Wake me up when libre hardware is affordable to the masses and not ten years old.
Liam Gonzalez
>$inxi -Fz >implying that I'll execute anything from this website
Ayden Morris
>Suck a commie cock Since when wanting freedom I a synonym to communism ? Get a fucking thesaurus and got find the definition of communism faggot
Bentley Brooks
>Being this much of a retard
David Mitchell
That's not your screenshot until you post inxi -F
Jace Bailey
>Isn't it ironic that the proprietary software developers call us communists? We are the ones who have provided for a free market, where they allow only monopoly. … if the users chooses this proprietary software package, he then falls into this monopoly for support … the only way to escape from monopoly is to escape from proprietary software, and that is what the free software movement is all about. We want you to escape and our work is to help you escape. We hope you will escape to the free world.
Camden Taylor
>unable to answer question about hardware Typical librebitch. You might not be a commie, but you're completely useless until you can provide people with libre hardware that's affordable and useful. Ten year old thinkpads for 500 pounds aren't going to work mate.
Caleb Gonzalez
>thinking that it's my real resolution >thinking that it's my real time
Zachary James
How do you deal with the lack of microcode? Just live with the glitchiness and data corruption?
Zachary Thompson
>microcode Do you even know what you are talking about
David Parker
Then every distro is SJW.
The people who make pages/posts/issues about respecting women and other SJW shit are simply a vocal minority which exists in every community that gets large enough.
Having complete freedom on your computer isn't about being affordable or efficient, it's about having freedom, privacy, and security. Sorry that it's too inconvenient for you, I hope you enjoy using software which has power over you instead of the other way around.
Nathan Jenkins
EOMA68 100$ for a complete free/libre ARM based hardware pc
No I won't post this kind of info (also thanks for this too user) I didn't know it.
Austin Cooper
typo: thanks for this tools user
Logan Fisher
>Then every distro is SJW. Give me 1 (ONE) distro more SJW than this:
Aiden Morris
The firmware for CPUs and GPUs that is including in the linux-firmware package (or similar) that updates the microcode to allow it to operate properly. They're proprietary firmware for cpus. Often labelled as intel-ucode or radeon-ucode or nvidia-ucode.
Jackson Phillips
second typo: tool
Blake Sullivan
If I remember they did this because the pressure and shitstorm that was raining on them was unbearable so they did it but don't give a fuck
Beg to differ, Ubuntu has a larger community with less SJW
Blake Thompson
pls respond
Aaron Adams
See retard
Jayden Phillips
it has non free software in it The end install trisquel
Ian Perry
>vapoware Yeah sorry champ, that's not shipping any time soon.
>Having complete freedom on your computer isn't about being affordable or efficient, it's about having freedom, privacy, and security. The rich already enjoy freedom from the law because they make and enforce the law. Unless you're offering everyman the chance to use libre hardware and software you're just a wishful thinking asshole shitting on average people without giving them a way out.
Go fuck yourself you holier than thou cunt.
Michael Howard
Which rules should I add to iptables to ensure when my VPN disconnects all traffic gets blocked/null routed? I need to let the VPN through but is that safe? It doesn't leak other data?
Ayden Thompson
What distro has the most driver compatibility?
Leo Martin
>vapoware this hardware is supported by the FSF and is in the list for RYF The FSF wouldn't have announce its support to the project if it wasn't happening
Jordan Nelson
Another nice thing about Debian: Comes deblobbed just like Linux-libre, but you can load whatever microcode or module you want.
Adrian Rivera
Depends on the kernel.
It actually use the script of the libre kernel but it still does not say to users the risk of using non free software
Jace Cooper
meanwhile on arch: ALL modules enabled by default
Elijah Hughes
Ubuntu/Fedora/Arch/Mint/Manjaro/Antergos - all will run okay.
At the end of the day, it comes down to how much package can you run.
Ubuntu has PPAs Arch has the AUR Fedora has RPMfusion
These three make the holy trinity I suppose
Logan Mitchell
meanwhile on arch: all useless modules are enabled by default
Gabriel Long
Well that's the point of Arch; "bloat me up to keep it simple". Just look how they manage packages.
Cameron Ward
You can install linux-libre from the AUR tho (not like anyone actually would).
