If you think about it, the headphone jack is mechanical and therefore a point of failure, making it external isn't a horrible idea

If the adapter is damaged, you get a new adapter. If the phone's headphone jack gets damaged, you need a new phone.

the lightning connector is easier to disconnect than a headphone, they're frankly more robust
