i have the game and beat it on high preset with a r9 390 and 97 4790k. 45 fps average, max 60, min 25 or something like that (on the benchmark)

This. Never bothered with low/mid-tier cards, but from my observations AMD generally has a better price/performance ratio, even if less useful features and such. Generally people should avoid those cards anyways, just save money and buy a high end card, buying low/mid-tier cards is frankly a waste of money.

Problem is I've spent more than £260 on a card before and the idea is a little bit stomach churning.

When the 970's came out that's what they cost but the 1070's are £360 +, makes comparisons of value hard.

And what about ops benchmarks?

Worst thing is that benchmark is making me want to get a 470 rather than splurge on a 1070.

For the amount of money I could save compared to a 480/1060 it's very enticing.
