If you have an ssh server with no additional security running on port 22 you're going to receive lots of login attempts. Most are going to be root, but also some generic login attempts. These are all of course completely harmless unless you're retarded and have ssh with password login enabled on an account with a simple password and a common username (root, "user", "bob" etc). In my experience you rarely receive more than ~10 attempts per minute (though this might vary with your IP), so they're not going to be able to crack any real passwords. If it still bothers you, or all the login attempts clog up your log files, you can either switch ports (this reduces the number of login attempts to zero in my experience) or you can get fail2ban.
