Why does this happen every time on every forum ever?

It's because no one looks at the post date of a thread on the first page so they get all confused and upset once they realize that they've spent 20 minutes reading a years old thread.

except most irc pages I'd want to go on are dead or non-existent if the technology is niche enough, which is why I'm reaching out for help in the first place.
