Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance). Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™ Recommended models: T420 - 14", normal size X220 - 12.5", ultraportable

Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops) >Used machines are plentiful and cheap. >Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet. >Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels. >Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models. >Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop. >Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain. >The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad. >Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.
I just replaced the thermal paste on my T410 and now it won't boot up. Powers on, fans turn on, but it doesn't boot up to bios.
Did I just fuck up?
Daniel Roberts
I recently bought a T420 and just got my msata from ebay in the mail. For the user that was asking for benchmarks here is a 24gb kingston drive. About ready to install windows.
Aaron Adams
Try reseating RAM. Every time I've had issues after going balls-deep into my Thinkpad, it turns out that I fucked up putting the RAM back in.
Easton Martinez
Does the Thinkpad x220 trackpad has a sticker that can be removed? Mine is wearing off a bit
Joseph Scott
What I want is an X220/30 wrist rest without the trackpad.
Sebastian Hernandez
...
Ryan Nguyen
sometimes it can be helpful, but i prefer a mouse instead. still, does the trackpad has the sticker? i know the 420 has it
Benjamin Cook
No, but you can replace the bit that gets worn down. Search for touchpad cover on ebay.
Adam Taylor
replying on x220 can confirm is a great recommendation
only downside is internal dedicated graphics are shit
keyboard nipple 10/10 great feature
Michael Ward
>24 gigs I was able to install Windows 8.1 on a Twist, I think it took 18GB total
I just got done with instalation. At first boot I was left with 5gb, now 3gb left after updates.
Mason Price
I would think it'd be at least $20 less if you upgrade it yourself. I got mine for $90, just got done upgrading ssd and ram for an extra 50. Now I just have to buy one of those alienware ips panels to get rid of that horrible screen.
Nicholas Jones
perfect for it.
Easton Torres
X series is perfect for Linux. They're simple machines with no obscure hardware configurations that would require Windows to be fully functional.
Angel Price
Thanks lads.
Bentley Reyes
Just got my x220 and the battery lock is loose, one side doesn't stay in and the battery just slips out, what can I do?
Sebastian Stewart
I'm a bit spooked about upgrading laptops myself, I might just get this one and a new battery if this one ends up sucking ass.
Caleb Perez
What's the best place to get a 1080p panel for T520?
Noah Taylor
kill yourself
Cameron Ward
Why is a w510 more wanted than a w520 and why is it mosy of the time more expensive?
Noah Moore
meh, kinda. i got sick of little problems that require a lot of tinkering. for example, the mute button would mute but not unmute. many shortcuts didn't work, for example fn+f5... i gave up and installed windows 10
Benjamin Perry
fuck you I bet you're that faggot on ebay who sold it to me
Asher Ward
the x1 hybrid won't be able to switch to android mode under linux. the IMM switcher only works under win7.
Ayden Turner
Both of those functions work perfectly on my X201s running Xubuntu.
Gavin Reed
I tried debian stable. I don't like xubuntu, mint, and mostly ubuntu
Xavier Morris
Are these laptops generally recommended because most ppl are poor here? I don't mind paying for quality.
Jonathan Cook
>ppl
Julian Sullivan
i laughed out loud
Josiah Ramirez
I am fucked. I braked it.
Tried to dissemble and assemble it. Nothing appeared to be wrong. I just killed a perfectly working laptop all because I wanted to do some basic maintenance on it. FML.
Should I get a X220 now or get this one repaired?
Noah Ramirez
>Nothing appeared to be wrong Something has to be. Could be static - did you make sure to ground yourself (minimum frequently touching large metal object and not wearing wool socks on carpet)? I replaced thermal paste on T420 before, and it was a breeze, but not sure how more difficult T410 is.
Gabriel Cox
>24gb drive why would you even spend money on that? especially when you can just get a 60 gig msata drive from micro center for $20
Brandon Reed
I literally did pic related to my T420, how do I fix it?
Carson Hall
Throw it in the trash. Wasting money on T420's utterly atrocious TN panels isn't worth it; it's like paying for literal shit, and smearing it onto your computer yourself.
Christopher Reed
Cause I didn't want spend more than $8. Definitely not "low usage" diskinfo has it at 6.5 Peta bytes written.
>azkr_electronics >member since Aug 31, 2016 >no rating It really does. What's the worst that can happen?
Hudson Evans
O shit i just realized the guy doesn't sell these boards anymore. Fuck.
Parker Clark
>stock photos >new seller itll go up in price a bit.
And then be shipped out covered in grime, smelling like shit and in a flat rate padded envelope.
Jace Baker
Jesus user, go to therapy.
Ian Campbell
if you don't care about it being 100% identical to stock then laptopscreen.com is excellent. The samsung replacement I got for my 450 is about a million times better than whatever cheap garbage lenovo ships with.
Hudson Miller
I wore a meme strap, man.
Jaxson Bennett
Are T430 screens actually bad or it's just people being picky? I'm thinking about buying T430 but I don't want to fiddle with it yet. I don't really need an IPS screen but I don't want to get eye strain either.
Luis Sullivan
It's pretty bad for watching movies, and it has poor viewing angles. For everything else, it's acceptable.
Nathaniel Jones
Sup Forums help
I swapped the cpu in my t420 to a i7 2670qm quad core like all the memes tell me to do.
I updated my bios to the latest version, but it will not startup with the new processor, it asks to run windows recovery and then never boots.
plz Sup Forums
Oliver Wood
Fuck my T460p. It was fine this morning, and when I came back home the screen wouldn't turn on. So I powered it off and tried to turn it back on but the screen doesn't do shit. Not even the backlight. Any ideas what to do?
Jack Ross
if it's windows recovery then it's either an issue with windows, or you managed to just barely fuck up your cpu installing it
Dominic Ward
> The cpu is recognized in BIOS, that means i didnt fuck it up right?
Leo Morgan
if you only partially fucked it up then the bios will recognize it just fine. it's only when you fully broke it that you wont even get to the bios. try reinstalling windows since that's pretty much your only option
Tyler Price
is an x220 worth buying as my first thinkpad
Leo Stewart
I'm running a 2670qm too but on Antergos, it just werks.
Your windows is being windows as usual.
Daniel Morris
Sorry senpai, I killed my T420 with a GDC EXP v8 today so I feel your pain. F
Connor Martin
wait what how
Jason Jenkins
Thanks for your help. 50 bucks might be gone :(
Bentley Williams
Doesn't post anymore. Doesn't even load in to bios. Tried clearing the nvram and every configuration of ram I could do. I get a beep code with no ram installed, but when you press the power button it flashes on for less than a second and then actually starts 5 seconds later, which it's never done before. I tested it with the dock again after resetting the nvram and it's still fucked.
Noah Watson
>new other >keyboard shine Honestly I would probably file a 'not as described' item because its obviously used.
Jason Miller
don't buy a fucking new one to destroy, jesus christ. get a fucking toshiba if you have to smash everything you own
Benjamin Young
im poor and only make $1100 a month. few years ago i spent $1600 on a toshiba qosmio gaymen laptop. it quickly overheated and bsod after 5-10 minutes of gaming. multiple warranty repairs no fixy. fuked it up worse actually. toshiba really gave me a lemon.
while later Sup Forums recommends t420. i buy the t420 used on amazon. actually paid about $70 too much, but i got a really nice clean one. have it for few years. its great. plays a few games. spacebar dies. order replacement oem keyboard. comes in 2 days. fix it. its all gud again. i luv my t420. ty Sup Forums

48 megs of ram baby, woo!
Sebastian Nguyen
you wouldn't happen to have the source, would you?
Liam Bennett
Wow nice old model. 755?
Oliver Flores
i also did this with my T420, got lucky and got a better i7 model with good screen as a replacement
i was still very fucking sad though, i had the exact same issue you did
try wiggling the LCD connector inverter board (where the wifi and bluetooth LEDs are) that could be it
Benjamin Bennett
The screen is worn out and burned in, the HDD is loud, nobody has changed the thermal paste in 19 years and it weighs more than I do, but fuck me is it cool. This laptop is only a year younger than me, this was top shit was I was a baby, now I have a machine with 750 times the ram, a modern 3300mhz Pentium G, and 2000 times the storage capacity How times have changed, really puts 20 years of progress into perspective when you can touch it.
Aiden Russell
380ED Not too old, like some of the DOS and 3.1 models, but this came stock with 95 1997 was a long time ago
On a Funny note, there were still documents in the recycle bin, some middle school girls school reports, not from 1997, no, but from 2012 Some poor girl had to use this in school until 2012 To other middle school girls, she must've been a loser, to Sup Forums she would be queen
Landon Anderson
Just watch the last few minutes of that auction. It'll fly over 500 bucks.
Nathan Ross
what's the best thermal paste application method for T420? dot, line or spread?
Chase Nelson
dot if dual core, thin as fug line if quad core
spreading is dum
Luke Moore
i did spreading according to arctic silver's advice, i will redo with dot and post here if i have better temps
Justin Collins
Now try to shitpost from it. The standard captcha loads for about a literal minute on a Pentium II with several hundred MiB of RAM, so good luck on a standard Pentium with only a few tens of MiB of RAM.
Levi Fisher
Although I don't like them much, I have a few 380 series, they are pretty durable. Current I have a 390X/iSeries I have which had shit in 2007 still I think, weird thing was that the kid had some sort of porn video, his links were interesting, to incest and animal stuff... hahaha
Pentium 4 all the way!
Jonathan Thomas
Yes. Very nice machine.
Henry Thompson
Status update: I let the battery die so I could start fresh or something. I plugged it in and now I get no response at all. At least before the keys and power button lit up.
Owen Martin
How likely is that to happen?
Jason Roberts
>6.5 Peta bytes wat? How's that possible? I remember seeing some test and the toughest disk started failing at 3 Peta bytes. Mind that they were 256gigs disks, so they had more room to spread the wear than measly 24gigs.
Hudson Gutierrez
I officially fell for the ThinkPad meme.
Liam Cooper
I don't know but my exp gdc has been running pretty good for a good amount of time.
Same setup, T420.

>i luv my t420 >but I beat it regularly gtfo, you don't love it at all, you monster. Also faggots who destroy their stuff in rage make me utterly mad. If you did that to my laptop you would lost your teeth.

What if single core?
Joseph Gonzalez
What linux for x220
Jace Diaz
meme? you mother fuckers make daily threads out of this fucker.
Oliver Torres
got the same mute problem, found a fix yet?
Nathan Stewart
I've found a x220 in local thrift shop for 200euro, near mint. Should i bite the bullet?
Thomas Reyes
Im thinking of getting an egpu, thoughts? Also does the dock station provide any benefits for this like I dunno increased speed over expresscard? Its a t520.
Levi Ward
>Im thinking of getting an egpu, thoughts? I like mine, serves me well.
>Also does the dock station provide any benefits for this? Aside from keeping all your peripherals, ethernet, power in one place and the feature of undocking easily your laptop, no.
Joshua Morgan
Gentoo
Joshua Hughes
What model do you have? How much performance loss is there when using the optimus internal lcd mirror thing? Is AMD a definite no? Was it basically plug and play minus the drivers of course? Is it true over 4gb ram machines tend to run into error 12? Any small details that bug you like sudden big drops in fps?
Juan Campbell
T420 with EXP GDC I don't have Optimus. Haven't tested an AMD card so no comment there, I'm using a GTX 960. Yes I'm running 16GB RAM, no issues at all. In the beginning i had random crashes but i fixed it by setting the expresscard speed manually to x1 in bios (Default is Auto), the bandwidth bottleneck is only noticeable in benchmarks, barely noticeable in gaming.
Jackson Flores
>thoughts? Did you read the thread? The other guy just exploded his thinkpad with egpu
Camden Diaz
wait where did that happen?
Alexander Watson
I did it from an R30 with Windows 2k once, it was ok with a 1ghz p3 and 1gb of ram i dont think this could do it without something like sshing into another computer or whatever that one /retro/ user does with his terminal i have something like that, pentium 4 in a laptop = housefire
