Assign tags to each file.
first one tb.h
are there any programs for digital hoarders, where you don't have to worry about folder structure and can sort your files based on tags and search through them?
This, all actual files go in one directory. Symlinks are made to categorize
So say I have file cat.jpg
There'd be the actual file in ~/files/cat.jpg
There'd be a symlink in ~/images/cats
There'd be a symlink in ~/images/animals
There'd be a symlink in ~/images
This way you can always easily find your file even if you don't remember exactly where it'd be. Sort of like how WalMart puts things in more than one place so that if you make a few educated guesses you'll find the item.
anyone who doesn't pick the second choice should probably be euthanized
First one.
Yes, e.g. tmsu.org
KDE implements a good system with balook and nepomuk, you can try it out in dolphin
i never thought about that. thanks for the tip
First one because it's more scalable, for example if you decide to make a new folder with other animals, you don't want to much clutter in you "root" directory
Just put everything in one folder and then perform a search when you want to find something. E.g.
>filename:cat filetype:jpg,png
>filename:dog filetype:avi,mkv
Nepomuk is heavy on resources though.
I was sort of half-joking
In reality I use OP's first option (though I actually consider videos to be the same as images since they're just lots of images in sequence)
>I actually consider videos to be the same as images since they're just lots of images in sequence
Jordan...
Well as far as storing them goes, I put them in the same place. I know a video and an image aren't exactly the same thing
This reminds me, if you want a good image sorter use this program called Hydrus Network
hydrusnetwork.github.io
Booru style sorting right on your computer. It's pretty cool.
Anyways OP, First is more sane in root directory, but I would find myself opting for the second in a directory of "Animals"
it would be nice to have "virtual folders" where you can select a bunch of files and apply a folder structure to them. you'd have one virtual folder where your animal files are structure by file type and one where they're sorted by animal type. depending on what you're currently doing you might need to access the files in different ways
That's exactly how TMSU works (via FUSE).
i should definitely check it out then :3

kys
i'm an obsessive individual, after trying every organisation method for years the first option is definitely the one to implement.

wow I'm totally blow the fuck out
How will I ever recover
fuck you underage fag
Can you take the intersection between the symlinks in 2 directories?
Any way of symlinking the files pretty fast ? Maybe a simple shell script?
> Which tag: Cat
Symlink to all the predefiened folders for the tag "Cat". Since i am only using Unix and BSD Systems i think this approach fits my needs.
If you must use directories, then it is common practice to go from general to specific
In this case, images and videos are general and may contain other directories besides animals without having to copy and paste blank image/video directories for every new directory made.
/media
├/images
│ ├/cats
│ └/dogs
├/videos
│ ├/cats
│ └/dogs
└/porn
├/cats are fine, too
└/ponies
In this it can also keeps your porn from being broken up.
Horsefucker.
You should be, having dedicated Images and Video folders is best, then category subfolders.
Yup, the eternal problem - whether to primarily organize by document/media type, or by content/subject type.
First one
hydrus network is great for images and videos. is natively windows but works with mono on linux as well.
btw the future is just context-sensitive searching. Google and Microsoft already apply their image searching shit to your files so you can just go to OneDrive or whatever and type in car and it will bring up all your car pics
I assume this technology will make itself into the mainstream in our homes soon.
>In the future we might have to ask Google to grab all your loli bukakke aheho pictures
Both, depends on how much of something I have.
I have
images/
music/
as well as
touhou/{images,music}/
for example.
cancer please go
>This, all actual files go in one directory.
KYS
Depends on the context. I'm not gonna put my album art in /images/ for example, they're gonna live with my audio files.
images.cat
images.dog
videos.cat
videos.dog
like that?
?
Nah, you just do tags man
>not using tags
>not sorting by type
the problem with tagging is that it takes about 2 fucktons of years to catch up. i would be willing to let all you fuckfaces do it but i downloaded like 2000+ images of friends from facebook, instagram, etc...
nothing nude, just in sexy outfits, bikinis, etc... so i can fap later. no single set (e.g. of woman A or woman B) could identify me, obviously, but the intersection of women A-Z would unambiguously single me out.
The better question is:
images/
├── cats/
└── dogs/
videos/
├── cats/
└── dogs/
porn/
├── cats/
└── dogs/
vs.
cats/
├── images/
└── videos/
└── porn/
dogs/

└── porn/
tags
No need to separate images and videos, IMHO. I treat them the same way.
