MacOS thread
picture in picture is comfy. Siri is better than she's ever been, has literally not misheard me once, new storage management options are actually useful. No real complaints here, liking it quite a bit.
tfw sierra is working perfectly on my hackintosh
oh hello dave
What do you use Siri for? Is it possible to tell her things like "read the marked text"? I think that would be neat
When I want a picture of something I just say "google a picture of X" and then she'll display a bunch of pics you can just drag to the desktop. Probably takes the same amount of time googling an image takes but it's pretty convenient and works well. It's also really good at finding/opening files.
>read the marked text
You mean like read a bunch of highlighted text in a textbook? I just tried it and she doesn't but that has been a feature of Preview for some time and works well.
hey homie can you give a quick tutorial on how the picture in picture works? ty homie
I'm not sure on which programs it works right now besides Safari, but to use it on youtube in Safari right click the video, then right click again (janky at the moment I know, but youtube has to fix this) and select picture in picture. That's it.
>tfw sierra is comfy as fuck
Siri is fucking useless, but I like getting drunk and say dirty things to see how she'll respond
Oh and as far as I know she doesn't ask to lock your desktop to your apple ID and for a colonoscopy to make sure you're not hiding any drugs every time you talk to her like Cortana does on windows. That's always a big plus. Definitely beats Cortana hands down.
What version of Safari does it ship with? Does it support WebM?
No. Still need vlc plugin
>tfw upgraded GPUs and can't use OS X anymore
Fucking hell Polaris or Pascal support when?
I'm pretty sure it does, it's version 10.0 on mine
I'm just here relaxing with Mavericks on a hackintosh...
Where do mactoddlers get the false impression they or their fruity toddler toys belong on a technology board?
Are you using safari as your main browser? Is there any way to disable history logging? I love the look and feel of safari but it has so little settings and the plugins are a pain in the ass to navigate.
The next generation of macbook is supposed to come with polaris architecture so soon enough I guess
How do you do fellow macfags.
Yeah, 470/460 support is there but 480 support still seems fucked. Of course the card that I have.
Yes. Not sure if you can disable logging, you can set it to clear history every day at least. There may be an extension that does that though.
Could you share the link how you installed hackintosh?
>windows default wallpaper
>always change them first day
>mac OS wallpaper
>realize it's been three months and you never considered changing it
VLC plugin hasn't worked for me in 9.1.x for a while now. Does it work for you in 10.x?
is he dieded?
Yeah it worked fine for me in El Cap and it's working fine now
no
i see someone has started emotionally shutting down and needs to express his frustration
>Is there any way to disable history logging?
Set history items to be removed daily in Preferences, or run permanently in Private Mode.
This is a work safe board you numb nut
This is a technology board mactoddler.
Comfy as fuck on Mavericks
Who else?
he's freaking out. he can't handle that there are people discussing apple stuff so he's posting the shit that he thinks would be as upsetting to us as this thread is to him.
if this was macrumors or something he would probably be right, but we're on Sup Forums. someone in this thread is probably masturbating right now.
just report it and move on
>thinking he can shock anyone on Sup Forums

probably from the hundreds of posts about the apple keynote where Sup Forums was mocking the earbuds and whatnot. if it's fair game to make fun of it, it's clearly fair game to discuss it in earnest.

I was pretty disappointed they didn't mention new laptops nor any computers in the keynote. Tbf I couldn't care less for their mobile stuff.
Tim Cook hinted a massive upgrade a few days ago
Do you really not get enough attention that you have to be edgy on a WSB
> Apple CEO Tim Cook has responded to a MacRumors reader's email about the lack of a long-awaited MacBook Pro refresh, stressing that he "loves the Mac" and that Apple is "very committed" to it. He told the customer, who wishes to remain anonymous, to "stay tuned," suggesting that updates to the Mac lineup are on the horizon
do yourself a favor and make a git repository with your dotfiles. .bashrc and all that shit. make a script that symlinks everything you need.
everything i need is in ~/code/dotfiles (.zshrc, sublime text settings, iterm preferences, etc...) with a script that deletes any existing files in those locations and then establishes a symlink in appropriate places. it's marginally more work, but you get the confidence of never losing your shit again.
just make sure to not commit stuff like your id_rsa key (even if your repo is private) if you include stuff like .ssh/config and whatnot.
Brings me back when Sup Forums was Guro
Finder had tab support for years tho. I like it but can't really see how it would affect software I use daily. Most programs already have their own implementation of tabs any way.
It would be nice to see SourceTree supporting it tho.
yeah but it was normal and not the result of some autistic kid having a panic attack.
That's a neat idea. Doing it right now. Thanks
lemme see what i can offer that would help you avoid accidentally committing anything important, or any suggestions for useful things you might not think to include... one sec

I have an old Mac Pro and I hear Sierra won't run on it...
I'm still on Yosemite...Waiting for Sierra to come out. I don't wanna upgrade to El Capitan, then Sierra. Screw that noise. I'm just worried about program compatibility with Sierra.
Programs are:
MAMP
Sketch
Affinity Designer
I know that feel bro. I have a Macbook Pro 15 inch, from last year. This is actually the first Mac computer I've ever owned, and I'm loving every single day with this machine. I have an android phone that's still under contract, so I could care less about iPhone 7. To be completely honest, the only mobile apple device that'd I'd like to get my hands on would be the iPad Pro with an apple pencil for drawing and note taking. That thing seems lit.
No one cares Pajeet.
>tfw Sierra installer failed twice and I had to roll back to El Capitan
Hopefully the release installer will work better.
>memePad Pro
is the os x market share very large in india or is this the joke? that you don't have a firm grasp on reality and all that
I found this, but I didn't see MAMP, or Affinity Designer on any of the lists.

"your system has run out of application memory"
I spent 5 hours running an ocr app and got hit by this only 35 minutes from completion. I have 8 gb built-in.
Is there anything I can do to free enough application memory?
I can't find any instructions on how to reset nvram without using two hands, or use safe mode without breaking my accessibility tools [mouse drivers, scrolling tools, etc.], either.
MacBook Air (11-inch Mid 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11.5)
hello complete clueless douchbag
this isn't your fucking tech support forum
Since I've upgraded to the 10.11.6 version of El Capitan with my Late-2011 MB pro, both my external drivers suddenly stopped working completely. The USB cable one just says "Read only", which is fine. However, the Firewire cable one doesn't mount at all and doesn't even show in Disk utility (actually that app doesn't even open at all anymore...)
It does show in the Terminal though..
The annoying thing is that my Time Machine saved things are in my Firewire drive, so I can't access them.
also tried to plug it into another computer and it didn't show at all, so it's not just my macbook...
getting really desperate here, if anyone can help me..
>actually that app doesn't even open at all anymore...
Sounds like you broke your shit. Boot into recovery and restore a Time Machine backup from before you started having those issues
So my "Show Scroll Bars" settings in System Preferences - General is always set to "Always" and my scroll bars always show on all my apps. Now whenever I go and change it to either "When scrolling" or "Automatically based on mouse or trackpad" the scroll bars don't disappear. Also, whenever I relaunch System Preferences and click on General, the "Show scroll bars" setting always goes back to "Always" no matter how many times I change it.
I've tried searching for a solution for a long long time and it seems like no one else out there has this problem. Posting about it here is my last hope before I'm actually forced to take my MacBook Pro to an Apple Store. Its a 2015 A1502 MacBook Pro Retina.
I didn't offer to debug all the individual problems you're having after your broken upgrade.
Roll back to before you had the problems. That's the point of backups.
I've filed an official bug report with Apple in mid-April and they requested a sysdiagnose dump, but since then I haven't heard a peep from them and this problem is persistent and very annoying, so I'm turning to the community for help.
These four processes have been driving me insane for a couple of months, UserEventAgent, launchd, cfprefsd, mds_stores, all running under root. In that order combined, they use over 230% CPU on my quad-core i7 Mac mini. They always appear together.
Worse, cfprefsd is hammering my disk hundreds of times a second creating a temporary file and then renaming it to /private/var/root/Library/Preferences/com.apple.xpc.activity2.plist. I'm talking about writing many GB an hour. The file always contains the same contents. Needless to say, the fan is running full blast and the whole system slows down. This occurs within minutes of rebooting and will sometimes clear on its own after a few hours, and sometimes I just have to reboot. Then it will go away for a day or two before rearing its ugly head again. Wash, rinse, repeat.
None of the suggested voodoo I've seen in my searches such as turning off Bluetooth, disabling Safari extensions, rebooting in recovery mode and resetting ACLs, has helped. That includes the advice here: Re: cfprefsd using > 90% of CPU.
I even tried disabling /System/Library/UserEventPlugins/com.apple.cts.plugin that someone suggested. It appeared to work, but it disables Time Machine so that "solution" is unacceptable.
Clearing out the ~/Library/Messages folder and rebooting seemed to help, but that is temporary at best because, even without the Messages app running, the incoming messages still recreate the database there. I'm currently running without Messages launched and yet I'm in the middle of an event as I write this. Is it related? Who knows? Even if I could totally disable Messages, I don't want to.
Today, nothing I try seems to help. There you have it gurus. What can I try now?
mamp, lol, are you stupid?? OS X literally ships with mysql apache and php by default.
or you could install them via homebrew..
Mail program on my iMac crashes when opening. I have tried starting computer in safe mode but Mail still crashed immediately. iMac (late 2012) is running El Capitan iOS 10.11.6. Mail is version 9.3.
Problem might be related to a corrupt email, which was on my iPhone and that has subsequently been deleted.
Seriously? How do I even set that up? Only reason I'm using MAMP is because I'm taking a Web Development course, and that's what they said to use.
When I tried to do do a TM backup to my external HD TM doesn.t see my existing backups and tries to do a new complete backup. It first says "preparing backup..." which takes a long time before it starting making a new full backup not using the existing one to do an incremental one.
>I don't like something so I'm going to lightly spam threads about it
Good job doing something with your life user
on several occasions last week, I went to run a program, and my mac stopped working. I was able to move the mouse, but the computer was frozen otherwise... i knew it because the clock stopped moving, and DiskLED was red. the only way I was able to get back into El Capitan was to use this thing called single user mode (GNU BASH). everytime I startup from that mode, I get a bunch of errors, but it does manage to startup properly. I don't know what really was going on, but when the computer had refused to startup, it got so hot that I could've had a fire, or burned myself. how do I prevent the system from crashing again? I know my hard drive is good so that's not it for sure... thanks!
He does this in every mac thread he can find. The thought of him actually browsing apple support for hours to find questions to post here is pretty amusing
OSX El Capitan, 10.11.6, I started to have problem with File sharing button on the toolbar. It doesn't let me share any files, Notes, pages, numbers, keynote, NONE. Id doesn't let me share them via email, doesn't let me share them in the FB, Twitter, etc... The file, I am trying to share or email, just stops responding and I have to quit the whole program. It also doesn't let me share files via iCloud link. Basically all the sharing has shut down. Files are updating themselves to the cloud and there is no problem sharing them from my iPhone or iPad.
I'm torn between getting the last non-retina and tricking it the fuck out with dual SSDs and max ram and shit, or waiting for the 2016 overhaul. Currently my only "Macs" are a hackintosh sandy bridge desktop which is my primary dev workstation, and a shitty Santa Rosa BLACKED.COM macbook. My primary laptop is an OpenBSD T430. Convince me any which way, macfa/g/s.
Shit, in case it isn't obvious, I'm referring to being torn on which macbook pro to get. bls halp Sup Forumsee
Do you have a list of paths to which you create mentioned symlinks? It would make my life easier.
Exporting a list of brew packages is clever as well.
It seems like you put a fair amount of thinking into addressing this issue. Do you often have to reset your working env or what exactly made you write an automated bootstrap process? Just curious.
I used to own 15MBP from 2011 with 6770M and 1680 × 1050 Matte LCD which was the last upgradable MBP before Retinas came out. I put 16GB of RAM in it and dual SSDs when SSDs only started to take off.
I then sold it and bought 15MBPr from late 2013 which I use as main dev "workstation" rigged with 2 1440p monitors to this day and couldn't be happier with the change. It was worth it.
I would advise you to not bother with old hw because advances made over the course of those few years are really perceivable. The only thing I miss from that 2011 model was the keyboard because it had longer key travel distance than the retina.
Also you should be aware of this:

Probably because Windows usually just has their logo as the wallpaper.
then forget about it, and just boot linux

anybody have more info on this i really really really hate mac os but the gui looks nice

On 9/6/16 I posted the issue to the HP Community Forum and between 9/7/16 and 9/8/16 had dialogue about possible solutions. I followed the advice received and performed the following recommended tasks – all to no avail:
1) Sequential powering down and power cord removal of Router, Range Extender, OfficeJet Pro 8610, and iMac and after 60 seconds powering the devices up in same order. Result: Would not Print.
2) Turned off Wireless at iMac. Connected iMac to Printer via Ethernet Cable. Printer would not print.
3) Tried to Scan Wireless from Printer to iMac: Would not Scan.
4) Tried Scan via Ethernet Cable from Printer to iMac: Scan worked.

Incidentally I have a 2010 Mbp and after the update to Mavericks started having graphics card crashes. Turned out there was a replacement programme (or whatever it's called) when my warranty was still valid.
Conveniently the problem started manifesting itself a year after my warranty expired. What's more, Apple "informed" users by posting about the replacement programme in the depths of their website and not emailing anyone about it.
I only found out about it recently by accident. Really disgusting behaviour by these cunts.
