Did social media kill the internet? I remember 2007 being the last good year. After that it was all downhill.

Coincidentally 2007-2008 was when Facebook took off. It let a floodgate of normies in and then internet has never been the same.

Yes, it pretty much boils down to more consumers of content started to outweight the creators of content. 9fag, rebbit, and facebook began recycling content to the point of mediocrity.

Like most things in life, theres a tipping point where things are much better with a lower level of population like a beach or a rollercoaster park.

>9fag, rebbit, and facebook began recycling content to the point of mediocrity
you left out Sup Forums

>Sup Forums
Isn't that a girls' website?

Smartphones were the reason.
No other reason but that.

Social networks were always popular well before smartphones came out.
But when they came out, it gave millions of more people easy access to the rest of the web because they were stuck with a SEARCH BAR in front of them. (which most of them likely never even had on their desktops and laptops, or they had MSN Search lol)

Memes, image macros and the whole lot became mainstream around 2011ish onwards.

No, it was smartphones. I don't think Funnyjunk-tier social media where everyone's in front of a desktop/laptop is really that bad.

Normies ruin everything, even buying something like a computer case is retarded due to gaymers, you'll see expensive cases that are gaudy, have little expansion, a bunch of fans for mu airflow, and they'll call that a gaming case. The rosewill challenger in the pic related is really the only based case left with 5 hdd bays, 3.5 inch bays, and three Optical bays.

90s and early 2000s
internet was still kind of a wild west.
mods only deleted extremely illegal content (on all sites)
internet = anonymous!
now
internet = people connecting with other people
and
lol NSA obviously is recording everything we say and do
mods everywhere.
just a year or 2 ago i stumbled upon jailbait showing nudes on vine.
shit was everywhere. no mods. report button was there but somehow 100s of jailbait were posting nudes everyday. some vids had 10,000s of loops.
then all of a sudden mods everywhere. ban hammers all jailbait. mods actually started doing their jobs.

MySpace was a thing oniichan

No its because the internet is so fucking accessible now. Not to mention even 4 year olds can browse that's how easy it is.

This.

Ever notice how some of the faggiest people on Sup Forums have image.png as their filenames? That's what happens when you post from a smartphone, iPhone specifically I think. Ever since the fappening Sup Forums has been flooded with normies.

I remember the good old days. The internet will never be the same, sadly.

I thought it had to do with cows and rural things like riding horses.

>the fappening
>zomg random celebrity person has a bagina!
Seems quite appropriate that the most boring, normie-tier porn would lure normies to this shithole

Social media was the sound of the bell tolling, smartphones were the nail in the coffin

Guarantee if there was a 100% foolproof way to ban phoneposting you would see content quality skyrocket dramatically

protip: normies aren't the problem, you are.

MySpace mainly just shilled music. Facebook pushes political agendas and frequent store advertisements or clickbait.

MySpace would have eventually gone the same way, but facebook pulled in more normies and people with worse computers that couldn't run the hell that was custom myspace layouts.

Internet is just a giant shopping mall now.

There's a lot of sites around that handle specific topics with a few people really interested in the topic,.. like forums or even youtube's channels... It's a reality that Internet has change since the main sites and social media become accessible to everyone and now everyone believes that what they have to say or think is "important", didn't realize yet that nobody will give a fuck about what you think soon or later... but you have to focus in your interest, make your research and consume content that isn't in the shallows of the web...

>Coincidentally 2007-2008 was when Facebook took off.
Facebook was bad in its own right even back then, but it was totally smartphones. "Computers for the rest of us" isn't just some meme. It only seems like it's just things like Facebook, Plebbit, etc. that were the cause because these became the websites that defined what people used smartphones for.

Not like a lot of people who weren't part of that tidalwave who are still here are any better than normalfags these days, honestly. Same with people who have left and gone to other boards. It's unreal how unreasonable and flat-out retarded some people are who claim to be oldfags who can "remember" the good old days (protip: they don't).

>the fappening
I will never understand the obsession with celeb shit. At all.

Nah.
Fuck Normal privilege, all hail Standard Deviation.

>WHY ISNT THE INTERNET A SECRIT VIP CLUB BOOHOOOOOO

You know what else happened in 2007?

I've been thinking of checking out Freenet, I hear it has that old vibe.

That whole potential 20 years in prison thing is a turnoff though I must say.

I think YouTube and then Netflix were just as bad an influence, desu.

Turned computers from an interactive/imagination based system to just another idiot box. It used to be that you had to express yourself through some symbolic intermediary, be it animations or webpages or whatever. Now people can just watch the Teevee, but on da Internet now.

the shit that killed the internet was COINTELPRO, the ad industry and our refusal to fuck up the Chinese

Too bad temps on it are fucking garbage.

Stupid frogposter.

Late 90s were the webs golden years imo.

>20 years in prison

How do you figure?

Kinda.

2007-2009 were when humanity peaked. Lots of partys. Lots of girls. economy was good. Normies were afraid of social media. Subgeniuses torrented like the world ws going to end

Now the economy collapsed. All the stupids are on social media. People are more isolated unsocial then ever before. The big torrent sites are on suicide watch. Most people dont have the bandwidth for private trackers.

But still i have have an JB iPhone 6 and a 2012 mac air. i have 10gb of 4g data for cheap and 8mbps free city wifi, I have a 2016 dual suspension mountain bike and can shitpost anywhere anytime.

Things are FUBAR 24/7 but i am toatlly free and can shitpost anywhere anytime and i am slways comfy,

Tough call OP

Fuck this gay earth.

Sup Forums has too long been infested with Linux ricer kiddies. It's time to purge them once and for all.

Any of the following regularly occurring threads on Sup Forums is either directly or indirectly about Linux ricing or autism:

* Intel vs. AMD threads
* GPU threads
* Various types of rig/battlestation/guts/Speccy threads ("What parts should I buy, /g?" "Is this part good, Sup Forums?" "Check out my specs, Sup Forums.")
* All Linux discussion and support threads (obviously)(which distro to use, how to rice, which anime child porn to use)

These threads only serve to discuss products for doing pointless stuff. They have nothing to do with programming, networking, security, privacy, freedom, design, usability, or anything else Sup Forums related.

These threads and the people who post within them belong in either or as they are the appropriate boards in which to discuss their hobby, along with "distro war" and "gentoo vs. arch" threads. This should be Rule #4 for Sup Forums and it should be aggressively enforced until the manchildren finally get it and move on.

This is the thread to petition Hiroshimoot to cure the /mlp/ cancer in Sup Forums. If you really care about technology and not just vapid consumerism, help by adding your voice to this discussion.

We can do it, Sup Forums.

----

lincucks don't care about technology in general.

All they care about is the rice, not the method. Pony pictures is and the method is .

Products are GPU shitstorms, speccy threads, guts threads, casing threads etc.

A typical lincuck's perception of judging a GPU is nothing because lincuck has no games or programs.

None of the ricer lincuckolds are interested in the method or process of making games. Game is not technology, programming games is.

Ricing is not technology and neither is discussing which build will look the best with anime theme.

Lincuckolds do not care about privacy and cryptology. They are more invested in anime child porn.

>2007-2009 were when humanity peaked.

Also check when smartphones took off too.
2007-2009 was the death of the internet as we know it.

In short, smartphones are easy enough to use internet-access devices that millions and millions of stupid people were now able to get online.

...

Such bullshit. Back when I was 12 such shitty comic strips wouldn't have been produced.

>google, amazon, microsoft make more traffic than youtube and netflix

>*Coincidentally, 2007-2008 was when I discovered Facebook.
ftfy

heh.

everything's fine you fucking cancer

does someone have the pic comparing youtubes policy on real names before and after google took over

Those several thousand websites still exist though.

YouTube is Google.

>YouTube is Google.
Not in that image, apparently
Rad the bottom

Every single type of thing that existed on the internet in 2007 (or 1997 for that matter) still exists today, often bigger and better. It's just that you're a bunch of normalfaggots who kept on just browsing the top 30 sites even when those got replaced by facebook or whatever

>microsoft
>yahoo
wat

Not gonna lie. I visit way less websites than I did 5-10 years ago.

Now like 80% of my browsing time is spend on Sup Forums, youtube and the generic news site I use as my homepage.

It was a combination of things but smartphones were most likely what turned the tide. Before that, "being on the internet" meant sitting at a computer in your room or somewhere with a laptop, in any case it was an inherently exclusionary activity. Now everyone is on the internet all the time and concepts that were distilled into early Sup Forums memes like "ha ha I'm using the internet" or "don't worry ma'am, I'm from the internet" don't exist or make sense at all anymore. There's nothing reclusive or special about it. Mass culture became synonymous with online culture and neither side won but instead we got a bizarre as hell chimera of cultures where Wendy's makes commercials about memes and bullshit like that.
As a result the internet became serious business and everyone lived miserably after all.

>MySpace mainly just shilled music.

Newfag. That was much later into their life after they tried to pivot back into relevancy. Everyone was already on FB by then.

this

>As a result the internet became serious business

This is what I miss the most. Now the internet is almost only for businesses first, and for the users second so everything is treated as such. No freedom, everything has to be spotless, everyone treats every comment like it's the most serious debate ever.

Honestly, I feel like 1999-2001 was the end of the great part of the internet. When broadband started to really take off and internet became more accessible to normies. Once broadband started to spread, the morons weren't staying in their AOL walled garden anymore.

That's also when the good IRC networks started to die off, too. I remember I could go on any major network, EFNet, DALnet, UnderNet, etc and join a channel using just the name of my state and there would be about 50 or so local people in the channel.

yeah IRc was the shit and even though it is still ther finding those channels is a bitch... but that can be a good thing

the reason the internet died was WOMEN

They are to blame for everything as usual

I can remember a time when all my friends were a mouse click away on icq..... then all the whore moved to msn....

Social groups fractured.... Then all the whores moved to myspace......

Social groups fractured..... Then all the whores moved to facebook....

Social groups fractured.... then all the whores moved to tinder.....

I dont use any of that shit they are too dum to use what i use now and they are sick of everything now and pumping out kids

Fucking whores.... everytime.

Pretty much, I put it down to the two main factors: Time and effort. Before smartphones you needed both so you had to either be smart or have a lot of free time.
Idiots and normalshitters didn't have either- they'd much rather be at a bar or whatever normies do instead of sitting inside one a computer.
But now they can be on facebook on the bus, in the bar, while on the shitter, or just sitting around in bed with zero effort.

>Ever since the fappening
And gamergate

and ebolachan
and every time Sup Forums was on TV
Hell, they explained for a hour how Sup Forums, anonymous and memes work on German TV some months ago

Commercialism killed the internet, social media was a catalyst.

I think you can find it in a video such as "free is a lie"

No matter how much you jaded faggots complain, there is one thing that remains: There is still more good content and information than there was on the internet 10 years before.

Sure, youtube screwed over my favorite animators and they all quit, but you can't truly beleive internet video before youtube and the end of dailup was that great.

Did your internet have lainchan, youtube, the Arch Linux community, Sup Forums without an annoying interface where you had to press CTRL+F, the same great torrent community, as much people scanlating manga, and so many other things?

>10 years ago if you spent time on the internet you were a loser
>now people find it weird if you don't spend time on the internet
motherfucker people called me a neeerd, anti-social and shit for using myspace now i am that for not using my facebook at all.

fucking shit.

> the same great torrent community
> as much people scanlating manga
those+fansubbing community have been strong for more than a decade
actually then it was more open--now people have moved to private trackers

>he doesn't own a silverstone tj07
poor as fuck m8

>facebook requires you use your real name
thank goodness that requirement got overturned here in based yurop.

The problem with the old style internet these days is that you can't discuss new ideas. Everyone just wants to talk about the old boring films, music, jokes, ect.. It's like being in a retirement home.

What boring places did you hang out where that ocurred?

What would you like to discuss?

...

Geniuses discuss ideas. Smart people discuss news and events. Idiots discuss other people.

It's like one of those site about cute animals and horse riding for little girls, I think.

2007 was the last year of IRC for me.

Which was also the last year of fun before the realization that I wasted my time too much on internet. Then it was a shit process. Then I found out about social media and I only got into it for a few normie friends, but I don't use that shit either.

Honestly... I miss IRC. I miss not being pandered to or treated like I'm intelligent. I miss people shitting on me for having awful opinions and such. The only place where I can get that is pretty small, on a pretty hidden videogame streaming "community" of the same 30 people for like 5 years.

I found some women there but they wouldn't stick for long, or they were just the odd ones. Or this one who turned out to be a furry and joined deviantart and she was fucking nuts. I miss being 16 and finding more degenerate people than me.

Freenet forces you to store other people's CP on your computer

>"community"
