IPhone 7 has double the single-core performance of its closest competitor

iPhone 7 has double the single-core performance of its closest competitor

daringfireball.net/linked/2016/09/14/geekbench-android-a10

Why is everyone so obsessed with pretending their phones are supercomputers?

What the fuck do people even use their phone for besides light internet browsing, GPS, text, and call? Literally any 4GLTE phone is okay

>Apple makes the most powerful phone on the market ( yetagain)
>who even needs all that!

For a board focused on tech you guys sure know how to bury your head in the sand and look stupid

Powerful phones are incredibly stupid. It's a fucking phone.

I don't give a shit about insulting or defending Apple or any other smartphone manufacturers.

What are people doing with phones that necessitate having 700 dollar pricetags attached to them?

So now I could not watch webms twice as fast?

Smartphones are the most personal and most used item many people own. If a phone costs $700 that is less than $2 a day for something people use hours a day for hundreds of tasks. That price is far from unreasonable.

What are people doing with phones that necessitate a 700 dollar pricetag that a 200 dollar or less 4G capable phone can't do?

You don't need an I7 in your hand to look at nigger twitter memes or update your Facebook status.

And then you realise there is no use for that power and it's all just a pissing contest to one-up competitors on the spec numbers and impress clueless consumers

i remember when SDs 805 were beating apples chips lagdroid fans were bragging so much about supperior performance. now that its been two years since iphone dominance performance doesnt seem too important to them

More powerful phones open up the possibility for better gaming experiences, more intensive photo and video editing apps, you name it. Why am I having to explain this here of all places? Phones don't need to be limited to texting, twitter, and Instagram.

better processors allow things like 4K recording or 240fps video
in addition to being faster, they usually have better set of features

you're not meant to buy a phone whenever a new one comes out. Get one, use it for 2-3 years or until it breaks/doesn't meet your expectations anymore, then move on

>gaming experiences

Single core? Is this the Pentium 4 days?

>Update: The iPhone 7 scores better on both single- and multi-core than any MacBook Air ever made, and performs comparably to a 2013 MacBook Pro.

The only thing this article proves is that Geekbench is a fucking joke and worthless for comparing cross platform performance.

>Android phones with 6GB RAM and hexacore processors QHD screens, iPhones with 2.4Ghz processor faster than most consumer laptops
>Both still have shit battery life

Honestly who gives a fuck if its single core benchmark is twice as high as whatever. Why don't companies actually improve useful things like durability and battery life?

Adobe Lightroom with Raw photo editing is available on the iphone 7.

/thread

>applel benchmarking

Yes, because when I want to edit images to any degree of precision, I want to do it on a 5 inch screen in my hand.

On what planet is this useful?

Why do they even bother making more and more powerful phones when it can't even handle html5?

>what is a third party

gotta better the hardware for them ads running everywhere on the phone.
I mean, 30seg ads load faster on Youtube than a video of the same length

The problem with chasing specs on a phone is that all app creators are focusing on reaching the widest audience and the audience at large does not have a top tier performing phone so your largely missing out because there's literally nothing to do on an iPhone that needs more power, and all the apps and games are made for wide compatibility not high performance.
Seriously, name one app on iOS that the iPhone 7 is a must for, that just wouldn't be bearable on an iPhone 5. I'll wait.
Of course it's different for android, I can make use of that power on a droid, I can run aide and compile apks faster. I can emulate PlayStation 1 and 2 on it, or side load ubuntu, plug into my TV and use it as a desktop.
But apple is so locked down is doesn't have any power uses. Prove me wrong.

The WebKit version that ships with iOS isn't bleeding edge, and even bleeding edge WebKit holds back on adding in features until the team is 100% sure that adding in said features isn't going to wreck battery life, make phones get hot, etc. For example, the entire reason that WebKit doesn't support VP8/VP9 is because hardware accel for it is hard to come by and playing it purely with software/CPU will make your CPU cook and gulp down battery.

>newest iShit only 7% faster than a samshit in multicore which all demanding tasks on a phone would utilize

HOLY FUCK APPLE IS BANKRUPT AND FINISHED

2 (or 4) cores vs 8. Stay mad.

>iToddler thinks core numbers mean shit

YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS SHIT UP

See you over 3 years when the phone gets tactically bottlenecked by software 'updates'.

Daily reminder that Android phones only recently caught up to the Iphone 5s (2013) single core performance in 2015

The iPhone 5s is on the same level as a SD810 in the Nexus 6P

Fucking pathetic.

Which means it's 2x faster than iPhone 6s. Good.

top mememaster

>single core performance
You probably aren't intelligent enough to process this information
But Android is fully capable of running more than one process at once

>haha icucks btfo our phone is so fast and powerful
>iphone 7 is 2x faster
>who cares about performance

#BTFO

So is iPhone. And it's the speed winner there too :)

But is only capable of running any single process at half the speed of an iPhone 7.

1000 post Sup Forums rolling stickies caused my last two upgrades until I settled on the iPhone 6S plus which can handle them.

>single-core

>the only way iToddlers can compare their fruity toddler toys to real phones is by comparing how it performs at 50% to other phones performing at 12.5% full capacity

the android/anti-Apple circlejerk has become 10x more laughable and embarrassing than the Apple fanboy circlejerk ever was.

This, rip tamtung housefire

This.

This thread is a staunch reminder that if it were up to Sup Forums, the entire world would still be running on Pentium IIIs.

Increasing power in phones a good goal, because:

1) It makes all tasks, even trivial ones, that much more trivial in terms of power cost by reducing the amount of time needed to complete said tasks and allowing the CPU to get to an idle state more quickly and save energy

2) It reduces the number of compromises that have to be made in software, allowing for things like improved low-light photo algorithms and RAW image handling

3) It allows for resource-intensive things like deep learning to happen on your local device, instead of privacy-unfriendly shipping off of work to some server somewhere

4) It's fucking progress. Desktop CPUs are more stagnant than a 10 billion year old swamp. Why the fuck would you want that to happen to mobile CPUs too?

I have an iPhone 5 that I have enjoyed using since late '12. All other competitors at the time even though cheaper have lost support or proven to be shit. I'm going to keep on using this phone until iOS 11 drops with the new iPhone (32 bit idevice support will end then). Although the initial cost was high I am paying less over the period of tin I use device in comparison to buying a new one everytime it becomes unsupported (no pajeet roms for me).

You may argue that I am losing out performance and hardware feature wise as the time goes on. But nothing released since I got my phone has caught my eye (except for 64bit). But even that isn't enough to convince me to upgrade. I also only got this phone because the 3GS I had at the time was shitting the bed with battery, didn't have all the features that iOS 6 touted and was 3.5 years old. Sure I wanted to wait until support for it dropped completely, fall '13, but at the time I saw it was well enough upgrade. And it has been because a considerable amount of features that Apple shills for the past few years are backwards compatible with 2012 Macs and iDevices.

Loling at upset andrones pretending they prefer slow chips

>an iToddler will defend this

Half the battery life too fucking lmao

>On paper, the Galaxy Note 7 is the clear winner here. It's got a bigger, higher-resolution screen, additional security with an iris scanner, and a beefier battery, albeit prone to catching fire.

>However, the iPhone has never been known for its stellar on-paper specs, yet continues to impress when it comes to real world performance.

>albeit prone to catching fire

>impress when it comes to real world performance.
lmao

this lol

I use my phone less than 2 hours a week.
What am I even supposed to do with it?

>every user is the same as me

When will people realize geekbench does not favor arm? Especially geekbench 4, which gives results quite close to those of specInt, and is compiled to take advantage of avx and sse extensions on x86. Is it so hard to believe that 2 a10 cores at 2.4 ghz beat intel cores lower clocked, past generation intel cores?

You're literally wrong though. Apple always pushes and shills their app developers to use the lowest level API that is accessible to them and you'll know that if you tried to push a media app to the app store. As for apps that will show hardware difference try Prisma offline or play a 10bit mkv with Infuse. Try and tell me that an iPhone 6s won't do it 3 times as fast as a 5s.

But you can't dispatch UI on multiple processors and guess what? UI lags hardest on low performing CPUs.

Almost all those things you touted are only available to rooted devices. As for emulation, you have to be blind to say that companies don't do a blanket ban on all such programs given their reputation for playing pirated games. Companies don't want that shit on their heads. Same goes for torrenting. The only reason that stuff may be available in the play store is because Google does not at all police the shit that people put on there.

>Side load Ubuntu
lmao

/thread of the day

I use an iPhone 5 and all apps run fine. The only issue I have is screen size but that's it. iOS 10 runs nearly perfect!

Wait you can emulate ps2 games on android?

Holy shit this

>who even needs all that!
That's the reply whenever someone mentions something Android has and iPhones don't like stock file managers, themes, SD card support.

buy a power bank

Fuck off, retard

Isn't cyanogenmod's browser based on webkit too?

>I can't do something
>instead I'll make a picture making fun of those who can do that thing
Wow, you sure showed me.

Fucking this. I'm gonna miss the days when uninstalling flash was the best and low maintenance defense against ads. Now every fucking pajeet and chink has shifted to html5 and Google inserts them everywhere. Also fuck ISPs for allowing priority download of ads from YouTube.

android developers are literal code monkeys. They can't into parallelism

You have no idea what the word 'literally' means and use it to give emphasis to your opinions.

Theres a video of the note 7 running in 720p vs iPhone 6s, still slower.
You mindless apple haters never shut up huh?

To be honest if you follow the guidelines of any app platform the only parallelism you're encouraged to do is delayed I/O or processor heavy tasks(mostly media stuff). Most apps won't benefit from more parallelism even if they implemented it because of the way Android handles and abstracts single cores.

>let's disregard a post that BTFO my original post and just focus on a single word
Android cultists everyone.

Why do people collect 10bit video, you know your screen can only show 8 bits, what are you gaining?

Sup Forums cred points. Also the only format free to leech on my high e-peen tracker.

I am not the person you were replying to. I don't give a shit about a phone that forces me to use an adapter having great IPC. I just get triggered as fuck by illiterate apes who think that appending 'literally' to an opinion makes them magically right.
Also you didn't BTFO anyone.

lmaoing at you right now

...

Its a character assassination, by showing you are ignorant its safe for everyone to disregard everything you say.

If it were up to me I would add another two cores with the same single core performance and overclock both to 4GHz with active cooling to BTFO the 6700k. Only if niggerbench is telling the truth though. ARM is shit because proprietary booting, no self describing hardware so that every SoC has to be explicitly supported in the kernel, no PCIe or some other high bandwidth bus instead of meme ethernet or sata that runs over USB because that's what the phone SoC you put on the RPi3 is. The least of my worries is the performance if niggerbench is true but at the same time if phones are so great why is ARM such a failure in the servermarket?

Is ARM any good or a meme? Honestly I have no fucking clue. Geekbench 4 supposedly uses the same dataset for both the mobile and desktop version. On niggerbench 3 there was like a massive variance between the individual performance scores if you run mobile and desktop on the same hardware but for some reason both had the same overall score.

Better compression, better dark details, and less color banding

>used for emphasis
I don't know what literary spectic well you dug up that crap from, but it's retarded. 'literally' means that you're not attributing an informal/hyperbolic meaning to a word, you're using the literal meaning. So using 'literally' informally is stop-eating-the-paste stupid.

Again, I wasn't the person he was replying to, but keep pretending this is some big conspiracy.
>by showing you are ignorant
Well at least we agree on something.

You do know that there are ps2 games sold as apps on the App Store? Why go through emulation when the developer has modified the source for the target platform?

I've had android phones and a PSP. I only changed the sdcard to a bigger one the day I got the device. How is that any different than bundling the purchasing of both together? Oh wait you'll mention the Apple storage tax argument. File managers are only useful if you want to organize your porn/torrent files. Since most people have no need for such neckbeards things and giving access to the common user is fucking retarded, it's best to not include it). Anyone worth their salt will get access to it on iOS. You are also ignoring the fact that since countless amount of apps are developed for iOS first, they will naturally include methods for importing and exporting files from their apps. Such functionality would be a waste to remove on android given locked bootloaders in lots of devices. Another reason why access to file system is pointless for the vast swath of people who use smartphones.

>the dictionary is wrong, my butthurt overrules it

okay princess

Okay, so you're stupid. That's an answer I suppose but none of what you said is true.

>Again, I wasn't the person he was replying to
The fact that you feel that you need to state that proves you are also ignorant and can be safely disregarded.

Like I give a shit what other people do. I only want to run my own software faster. I would even build a fucking ARM SoC cluster if the Raspberry Pi 3 and it's competitors weren't such a meme.

>riding iDubbbz dick this hard.

Thanks for proving me right, dude.

>thinking I'm going to read your blog post
Maybe you missed the part where I clearly outlined I didn't give a shit about your phone wars and only got triggered by a word.

Oh look, here's a dictionary that disagrees with you! How?

Then stop posting in a phone thread, cuck.

So you can use one word to mean its opposite if it's informally? This makes sense in your head?

Here are the top 5 Android phones, compared to the iPhone 7:

DEVICE SINGLE-CORE MULTI-CORE
iPhone 7/7 Plus 450[1] 4,000[1]
Samsung Galaxy S7 1,806 5,213
Samsung Galaxy Note 7 1,786 5,228
Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge 1,744 5,203
Huawei P9 1,729 4,735
OnePlus 3 1,698 4,015
Appleā€™s A-series chip design team seems to be doing horribly.

[1]: I posted this so it must be true btw

>le cuck maymay xD
Keep using generic meme words outside their context, you're totally not making yourself look like someone who ate paste as a child.

Cool, although I personally don't think it's worth it without the 3.5mm jack.

>I'm willing to accept the tradeoff of a larger phone
>I'm not willing to accept the tradeoff of carrying around a sligthly larger device with a significantly higher battery capacity only when I need it

if you like living the lag life then keep using your iphone 5, even spotify takes twice as long to load in a 5 than in a 5s

It's a shame nothing can take advantage of it.

The emulator scene moved entirely to Android because Google lets them monetize their work on the official store.

>Oh look, here's a dictionary that disagrees with you!

Nope.

>56617773
>informal:- used for emphasis or to express strong feeling while not being literally true

>in effect:- virtually (not literally true) will literally turn the world upside down to combat cruelty or injustice

I think you're a little south of 100 IQ. You do know that common phrases and meanings are routinely updated & entered into the common lexicon of dictionaries et al. yes?

Same. It could run crysis for all I care, if I have to carry around an adapter to listen to music then it's not worth it.
>but you can use these included earbuds!
Yeah, no.

Double dubs. pls reply

Literally every process will take advantage of it and conserve power you dip

>You do know that there are ps2 games sold as apps on the App Store? Why go through emulation when the developer has modified the source for the target platform?
Maybe because not all 2000 games aren't in the app store?

You're using to 'literally' to mean 'figuratively', which is its complete opposite, and I'm the one south of 100 IQ? Ok dude.
